Trailer Park Baseball
(H2H Categories league)
All owners please review the bullets below to finish setting up this league.
Things to discuss
- Number of teams. I’m down for 14 teams. Should we go with more… or less?
- Number of total player positions. I usually assign 28 slots to 13 & 14 team leagues and 27-slots to 16-team leagues. I feel those numbers are right considering MLB’s universe player pool. Yahoo’s public leagues have a reduced roster size that results in an over-abundant free-agent pool. However, that in my view does not exactly make for a challenging game. This league is currently set with roster size of 28-players including the bench. Do you want to change that? I can make it smaller by one or two but that would be it.
- Do we leave both the CI & MI slots like in the other leagues or do away with one of them? If so, which one should go away?
- Number of Utility slots. Currently I added two Util slots. Do we cut it to 1 or leave it at 2?
- Number of RP & P slots. We are currently at 3-SP, 3-RP, and 4-P’s. I definitely want at least 3-SP. I’m open to discuss on the number of RP and P; perhaps slicing a P and adding a SP? You guys decide.
- Number of Categories. To choose between 5x5, 6x6, or 7x7 formats from the categories below. I added them all for now so you can see them in the league but we can change it at any time before the draft. I like all of the cats below but also feel other cats are very useful - like OPS in batting for instance if we need to merge OBP & SLG into one category. And QS and K/9 are also interesting pitching categories to give the league a twist. The seven Batting and Pitching categories below are my personal choice if we agreed to go 7x7. But some of you might find 7x7 leagues too redundant or complicated so I’m good with a 6x6 or even 5x5 format as well. Tell me what you think in terms of # of categories and we’ll go with what the majority says.
o Batting: Runs (R), Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), Stolen Bases (SB), Batting Average (AVG), On-base Percentage (OBP), Slugging Percentage (SLG)
o Pitching: Wins (W), Saves (SV), Strikeouts (K), Holds (HLD), Earned Run Average (ERA), (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched (WHIP), Strikeouts per Walk Ratio (K/BB)
- We will go by overall W-L-T (categories) standings. However, the question is should we add divisions too in order to assign divisional prizes like in the other H2H leagues? I did that in the other leagues to give out additional side prizes at the end of the regular season. But that is optional. So, divisional prizes or no divisional prizes in this league? Divisional standings won’t affect the final overall standings in any way. The top teams at the end of the season get the larger prizes. However, I am not taking away the weekly match prizes because that’s what I’m counting on to keep the league competitive and active all season long; and also to help spread the cash payouts around, which in turn motivates returning owners to stay in the league throughout the years. As I’ve mentioned before, winner-takes-all schemes are slowly-but-surely running out of phase in fantasy sports. It’s like playing freaking bingo. I would, however, be willing to lower the match prizes in this league to allow a higher chunk of the cash to be available for the top teams at the end of the year. Leaving the league without divisional prizes also would raise the Top-Teams’ Money Pot but I’ll set it up with or without divisional prizes. It’s up to the majority.
- Number of main prizes and percentage cuts. This is also open for discussion. I suggest we have at least four larger prizes at the end of the season if we go with 14-teams, but I am open for suggestions. In four prize leagues I normally set the main prize for 50% of the Top-Teams Pot. But I am also willing to raise that if you guys want me to.
- The previous bullet takes us the final money configuration subject and the most important: the league buy-in. I mentioned a $100-$150 range so let’s vote on three options… $100, $125, $150. Of course we can choose any buy-in so it is not restricted to just those three. Give me a number and we’ll take it from there. I have a League Configuration Calculator that I created that will do all the number crunching for us in just a few seconds. Once we agree on the basic league settings like categories, positions, etc. above, we can move on to the payouts configuration and do some test runs with the calculator using different match prizes and top-teams prize cuts until we find the ideal balance.
- Finally, Draft Date/ Time Is the current date, Wed Mar 21 9:15pm EDT, a good date? Yes or no, please provide your dates available if you say no.
The idea of the H2H Categories format (versus the One-Win format we have in two other leagues) is to bring something different to the coming baseball season. That’s also the main reason I decided to put together a H2H leagues without playoffs. But anot
