Good luck to both Knuckleballers and APT in the Championship Game of RDBL 2014.

Congrats to everyone for making it to the playoff rounds.

This is just a reminder that RDBL plays with our 'lockdown' rule intact throughout the entire year, including throughout the entire playoffs.

  • Because MLB active rosters may expand on Sept 1 from 25 to 40 players, I have tried to expand our RDBL rosters to 3 DL spots and 10 Bench positions. The idea is to try to incorporate into our league some of the top prospect callups without having to drop veteran players who we have been relying on, and have a lot of good baseball left in them. Unfortunately, the Yahoo page has yet to cooperate. The rules allow it, but it's just not going through. I'll try again, and if you see it on your team page, feel free to pick up and use a few propects. If you don't, know that for some reason, Yahoo wouldn't alow it. And another thing, once we would make these expansions, they would be in place for the remainder of our season.

  • Teams,

This is to note that, in accordance with manager wishes, and because of the level of completion in the league, the regular season has been shortened by one week, to end after play in week 22. The championship playoffs will include six teams, teams 1-6 after regular season play. Teams seeded #1 and #2 will receive byes in week 23 and advance directly to the quarterfinal round in week 23. Also, you may note that according to the ‘playoff schedule’ on the league site, the consolation playoff is scheduled to include 6 teams and byes for teams seeded #7 and #8. However, since the teams finishing #11 and #12 are no longer in completion, they will be removed from competition as possible.

All competing teams should be prepared to play through week #25.

  • Teams,

    Thanx for staying with me.

I continue to be impressed with the competition in our league. We’ve lost two teams, but at this late date, the other 10 owners are still playing. That’s neat!

As you know, I’ve tossed around the idea of expanding the championship playoffs from the current 4 to include 6 teams, both with 4 teams playing in a consolation playoff.

A final thing to consider, especially that 10 owners are still playing: Speaking as an owner who has had a season cut short because of a lousy, unexpected finish, if someone is still playing, I’d like to see them play through week 25 instead of having to quit after week 22, all because they finished 9th or 10th because of league rankings.

We can do this only if we allow 6 teams into the championship playoffs, teams 7-10 playing in the consolation playoffs. I’d like to again get some feedback on this from owners.

You can email, answer or post. But if you’re going to answer, please do it soon.

Be reminded that in a 6/4 playoff system, teams with the #1 and #2 seeds after week 22 will have a bye in week 23.

    More info is at https://help.yahoo.com/kb/fantasy-baseball/SLN6806.html?impressions=true

If I do not hear from someone within a week or two, I will assume that that manager prefers the status quo: 4 in championships, 4 in consolation. Ranks #9 and #10 finished for the year.

  • Teams,

I know it's a late date, but I was considering something for the league, and needed a majority of respondents consent before taking such a step. Without consent, things will remain as is.

As you probably know, our regular season is 23 weeks long, with 4 teams making the playoffs. Each team is playing each other team two times, with each team playing one more time in week 23 (and I really haven’t looked at who’s scheduled to play whom that week). The playoffs are weeks 24-25. Here’s the proposal:

We can have the regular season end after week 22. This would mean that each team will play each other team just two times to determine who makes the playoffs. Playoffs would then run for three weeks, 23-25, and we would have the three division champions plus three wildcard teams.

I really haven’t thought through the ramifications, except that half of the league would be in the playoffs. That’s kinda distasteful for an old-timer like me (and no, I don’t like the DH either), but I just wanted to float the idea and see what everyone thought.

I’m looking forward to responses. Email or post on the league page.

With the MLB All-Star game upcoming, I’d like to remind everyone how the schedule and scoring will work during that time:

    All-Star week schedule changes
Because the All-Star break is several days long, we combine the 2 Game Weeks around the game into a single Game Week.
This year, the All-Star break takes place during Game Week 15, from July 7, 2014 through July 20, 2014.

Scoring during the All-Star week schedule changes
Even though we'll show live All-Star game stats in StatTracker and on your team page, none of them actually count in Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball.
During Game Week 15, all stats are cumulative for the entire Game Week, including the following:
    • No changes to innings-pitched minimums – RDBL features a 12-inning minimum, so you'll still only need to accumulate 12 total innings even though the week is longer.
    • Stats and scoring won't reset after one week - Instead, they'll continue to accumulate throughout the entire 14 days (July 7-20)
    • No changes to weekly transaction limits – Since RDBL has a 3-transaction limit, you'll still only be able to pick up 3 players via waivers or free agency during the week (July7-20)

Watch your available players. This week, I will be doing additional drops from Leo's Matchless and Zack's Bold teams. This will finalize that we have ten active teams for 2014, and we will have available at least the 200 top players in MLB.

Of course, players will be available, via waivers while on waivers, then as free agents afterward.

Have a great rest of the year. Everyone's doing well, especially considering how injuries and disappointing performances have so far impacted some teams.

  • Teams,

Hopefully everyone is having a pleasant springtime rooting for your favorite MLB team and enjoying RDBL 2014.

This note is to inform each manager that we are scheduled to begin the reintegration of players on non-competing teams. Currently two teams, Leo’s Matchless Team and Zach’s Bold Team, are scheduled to have as many players as possible released tomorrow, 5/2/14. In the past, Yahoo rules have required a player remaining in each of the field positions, SP and RP, but all others will be removed and will be available by tomorrow late afternoon via the normal waiver rules. I believe that requirement still exists. The primary factor used to determine which player is cut is Yahoo’s ‘season rank.’ Remember that regardless of rank, a player must remain at each of the 10 playing positions on the roster.

I should note that we currently have an invite out for a new manager of Zach’s Bold Team, so if he accepts by tomorrow, only players on Leo’s will be released. If he does not, accept by then, players from Zach’s and Leo’s will be cut as scheduled.

I would remind everyone of a few things. The waiver period is 2 days, so any players claimed by early Saturday should clear by Monday and be available on their new teams for week 6. The waiver order is on the league home page and started the season as reverse of the draft order. Only three pickups are allowed per team per week. Any players released but not claimed will be available as free agents after 2 days.

The Commissioner note dated March 9th includes a more complete discussion of the ‘lockdown/reintegration’ policy.

If there are any questions or comments, feel free to post or email.

You may not have noticed that there have been a couple of team management changes. Ambassadors decided that he was not able to continue as manager and gave his team over to Chris, who changed his team name to Redhead Redemption and is excited to be a part of RDBL 2014. Secondly, we had a fantasy veteran ask to be allowed into the league, so they have been offered the team LSM.

LSM, Zacks and Leos are less than a week from being disbanded. In RDBL, we have no rule regarding the assigning of teams to new managers without the prior permission of the current owner, however we do have precedent and such has been followed. LSM was chosen because they have the most points of the available teams. We welcome and look forward to competing against our newest manager.

This serves as reminder that any current manager, should he be unable to continue in competition, can assign a co-manager, or can send to the Commish the email of someone wanting to take his team over, and we will issue an invitation to the new manager.

Also, if anyone knows of someone who would like to take over management of a team in RDBL, we still have two teams available in their entirety until next Friday, May 2nd. At that time, Zacks and Leos are scheduled to have their best players disbanded. They will still be available after next Friday, but their rosters would have to be filled out through waivers. Anyway, should a manager know of someone who would like to manage one of these two remaining teams, or any team set to go through the ‘reintegration’ process, simply send this request and their email to the Commish.

Be assured that all is done with fair competition and the best interest of RDBL as our primary concerns. Please feel free to respond or post with any comments or questions.

We have made changes to Zack’s Bold, LSM and Leo’s Matchless teams in accordance with the league lockdown policy as outlined in Commissioner Note dated March 31 and elsewhere. They have been personally notified of the change. If none of the have made any roster of lineup changes by Friday May 2, their teams will be locked out and their top performing players will become available publicly via the normal waiver process. Teams will be notified on May 2 should that occur.

Just a review of our 'lockdown/reinstatment' rules, copied from Commissioner note on March 9:

"If a manager goes one month without logging on and making any changes, his roster will be made ‘non-competitive’ by the commissioner (i.e., all his starting roster spots will be full, but his best players will be benched). In order to change this, all an owner has to do is simply log on and make the changes. At that time, he will be back in good graces like every other team.

If, after two weeks in ‘lockdown,’ he does not login and begin play, the league will assume that the manager no longer desires to play in Best Name Baseball in 2014, and the ‘Re-integration Rule’ will take effect. The top ten players from the team, as determined by Yahoo’s player rank for the season up to that point, will be removed from each team and placed into the waiver pool. They will be available for pickup according to the normal waiver rules. It will be up to each team owner to be following the activity of the other teams, and note when players are waived or available throughout the season."

  • Teams;

It has been asked why players who will begin the season on the DL cannot be placed on the DL in our league. According to Yahoo rules, 'A team may announce that a player will be placed on the DL. This only indicates the club's intention to place him on the DL. Until the player is actually put on the official Major League Baseball DL, he cannot be placed into the DL position in Yahoo Sports Fantasy Baseball. Most actual transactions will not take place until just prior to that particular team's first game of the season.' This should occur the morning of the first game of the season for that team. Yahoo should put the player onto the Yahoo DL then, at which time, RDBL owners can place the player onto the team DL and pick up a replacement player.

This is just a reminder that, though I try to email Commish Updates, as well as post them, as of the beginning of the 2014 Major League baseball season (Sat. March 22nd), my updates will no longer be emailed to individual owners. My hope is to encourage owners to regularly check the updates, work the league site, the individual tabs and features, etc. The manager who does so has a better chance of doing well in RDBL this year.

  • Teams,

I trust you are well and prepared for Tuesday's draft.

Usually, we let Yahoo assign a random draft order. As a team owner, I am okay with that, but also being commissioner, I have never liked it. It has never happened, but if the selection allowed me to draft 1 or 2, I would feel as if there was something improper at hand.

Therefore, I am writing to inform everyone that for our live, online draft next week, we will be assigning draft rankings according to an offline, blind, random order selection process.

The draft order will be posted here and on the league message board, and I will try to email each team with their position.

The only one that I know for certain is that my team, Reman the Cores, will be drafting last (that is 12th, assuming we have 12 teams).

    post or email input,

    the Commish
    Mar 14 3:31 PM
  • Teams,

As you may know, draft day is less than two weeks away. Also, we currently are nine teams (including the Commish ‘control team,’ Confused Metal), but are now public, so we will fill before draft. If you personally know of someone who would like to commit to owning, managing and playing a team in RDBL, just have them send to me their email address, and I will send to them an invite.

Anyway, I’m writing about the ‘Lockdown Rule’ and ‘Reintegration Policy,’ two rules which, to my knowledge, are unique to RDBL.

First, allow me to state clearly that the purpose is fair play and competition, especially considering that many leagues will have someone who will register and draft, but will not play, taking their best players with them. The lockdown is meant to encourage such managers and to send to them the message that they cannot expect to do well (even get a trophy) if they are not an active manager. Once drafted, only a manager can delete his team, but the league can prevent him from negatively affecting pair play.

Simply, the lockdown rule in 2014 will work as follows:

If you’ve been with us in the past, you are familiar with it. However, though we’ve kept the name, there will be no actual lock applied. If a manager goes one month without logging on and making any changes, his roster will be made ‘non-competitive’ by the commissioner (i.e., all his starting roster spots will be full, but his best players will be benched).

It will be up to each team owner to be following the activity of the other teams, and note when players are waived or available throughout the season.

I cannot remove teams once the season starts, per Yahoo policy (though I can apply certain locks at league discretion) but should any team owner after going through the ‘Re-integration Rule’ have a change of mind and log on to find his best players missing, he will have to restock his team through the normal means (free agency, waivers).

Hopefully that covers it. Hopefully we do not have to utilize this rule. However it would beat one manager having players like Miguel Cabrera, Mike Trout and Joey Votto on his roster but never once log on during the season, while someone else is doing everything they can to try and find more hitting.

I’ll be looking forward to hearing from anyone with questions or comments.

Hopefully see you at the draft on Tuesday the 18th,

    The Commissioner

  • Teams,

RDBL has a commitment to providing the most realistic MLB experience possible in Yahoo leagues, yet we are equally aware of the personal lives of all team owners. That is a reason why we are a weekly league. There are things more important than baseball (and there was a time when I would have never made that statement. It's practically heretical in my area.).

Therefore, desiring to avoid a mistake in the past, made by placing our live online draft in the middle of the weekend, in 2014, after consulting with as many teams as would reply, we are drafting on a mid-week evening, Tue. March 18th, 7pm EDST, to be precise. We apologize to anyone who may have work or other commitments, but input from every team in the league was solicited before making this decision. We trust that freeing up a weekend from a fantasy baseball draft is appreciated.
