    • Getting breather Saturday
Gurriel isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Saturday's game versus Detroit.

Advice: Gurriel has gone just 1-for-18 with nine strikeouts across his past five games, so the D-backs will give him a day to regroup Saturday. Jake McCarthy, Corbin Carroll and Pavin Smith will start across the outfield while Gurriel rests. Rotowire.com Today, 1:07 pm
    • Throws bullpen session
Cole (elbow) threw two simulated innings in the bullpen Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Cole has been slowly ramping up his activity over the past few weeks and his next step will likely be facing hitters in live batting practice. The reigning AL Cy Young winner has been out since mid-March while nursing nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow and he's been throwing off a mound since May 4. Pitching coach Matt Blake said after Cole's bullpen session Saturday that the right-hander was clocked throwing in the low 90s, but he is still likely multiple weeks away from making his return. At this rate, Cole's timetable to return looks like it could be mid-to-late June. Rotowire.com Today, 10:28 am

    • Gerrit Cole (elbow) may face hitters next week
Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake told reporters Saturday that Gerrit Cole (elbow) may progress to facing hitters next week.

Advice: Blake added that Cole was throwing in the low 90’s during Saturday’s bullpen session, elaborating that he’s a notch ahead of a typical spring training progression, but remains several weeks from returning. The 33-year-old reigning AL Cy Young Award winner isn’t expected back until sometime in mid-June. Rotoworld Today, 9:15 am

    • Deployed in eighth inning Friday
Suarez earned a hold against Atlanta on Friday, allowing two hits and striking out two batters over one inning.

Advice: Suarez has been one of the best closers in baseball this season with 12 saves (in 12 chances) and a 0.47 ERA, so his usage in the eighth inning against Atlanta was not a demotion. Rather, the right-hander was called upon to face the heart of Atlanta's formidable lineup, and though he gave up singles to Marcell Ozuna and Chadwick Tromp, Suarez managed to emerge from the outing with his 16-game scoreless streak intact. The 33-year-old should see most of his work in the ninth inning going forward, though Friday's usage is an indication that manager Mike Shildt won't hesitate to use Suarez in the highest-leverage situations prior to the ninth if the situation calls for it. • Idle Saturday
Cabrera isn't in the Yankees' lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox.

Advice: Cabrera will sit down Saturday after going 0-for-3 with a strikeout during New York's win over the Sox on Friday. His absence will give Jon Berti a chance to start at the hot corner while batting ninth. Rotowire.com Today, 7:20 am

    • Posts three hits Friday
Arenado went 3-for-5 with one RBI in Friday's 10-6 win over the Red Sox.

Advice: Arenado had gone 5-for-38 with no multi-hit efforts and a 1:10 BB:K over his previous nine contests. The third baseman hasn't stumbled as much as some of his teammates, but he's still in the midst of a down year, especially from a power standpoint. He's slashing .268/.323/.375 with three home runs, 22 RBI, 17 runs scored and nine doubles over 43 games on the year. Arenado hasn't hit fewer than 20 homers in a full-length campaign since 2014, and he's never slugged lower than .405 over a full year in his career, but he's got a lot of work to do to get back to those levels in 2024. • Robert Suarez faces heart of Braves lineup in 8th
Robert Suarez worked the eighth against the Braves on Friday and picked up his first hold by pitching a scoreless inning.

Advice: The Padres don’t usually play matchups with their closer, but they did tonight with No. 2 hitter Ozzie Albies due up to start the eighth. It all worked out perfectly; Suarez gave up a couple of hits, but he protected the two-run lead, and then Jeremiah Estrada locked things up against the bottom of the order in the ninth. • Arraez back in the lineup Friday
Arraez is back in the Padres lineup, hitting leadoff against the Braves on Friday.

Advice: Arraez had a routine day off on Wednesday as the Padres faced Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber. He’s back in there as the designated hitter and leadoff man for Friday’s game. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:51 pm

    • Struggles against Boston
Littell didn't factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings against the Red Sox. He struck out three.

Advice: Littell surrendered his first home run since April 22, yielding a solo home run to Rafael Devers in the second inning. Thursday's outing marked Littell's second time in nine starts allowing four or more runs. On the year, Littell owns a 3.44 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and a 48:4 K:BB across 49.2 innings. He's tentatively scheduled for a rematch with Boston during a three-game homestand early next week. Rotowire.com Thursday, 8:54 pm
