Cabrera (shoulder) threw two innings and 35 pitches in a live bullpen session Friday, MLB.com reports.
Advice: The bullpen session was Cabrera's second of the week; he previously threw a 30-pitch up-and-down session Tuesday. Cabrera could take the next step forward this week by facing hitters in live batting practice before he heads out on a minor-league rehab assignment that will likely consist of one or two starts. He's been on the injured list since May 8 with a right shoulder impingement and isn't expected to rejoin the Miami rotation until late June or early July. Rotowire.comToday, 12:05 pm
Contreras (forearm) could be activated from the 10-day injured list as soon as next Monday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Advice: Contreras will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday and might require less than a week of rehab games before rejoining the Cardinals lineup. Woo cautions that the catcher's timeline for rejoining the big club remains tentative, and a firmer return date may not come into focus until Contreras gets a few rehab games under his belt. Willson Contreras (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Memphis.
Advice: Contreras has been cleared to return to game action and is targeting a return to St. Louis before the end of the month. The 32-year-old backstop has made a rapid recovery from surgery last month to repair a fractured left forearm. There’s a chance he’s back by the start of next week. RotoworldToday, 8:27 am
Happ went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a run scored in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Cardinals.
Advice: Happ was the only Chicago player with multiple hits and had the only extra-base knock as well in a sluggish offensive game for his team. The outfielder now has consecutive two-hit efforts with a home run and a double mixed in. Happ's overall .224/.335/.384 slash line could still use some work to get closer to his career marks, though he's starting to trend in the right direction. Rotowire.comToday, 5:02 am
Megill allowed a hit and a walk over a scoreless inning Sunday, striking out one and earning a save over the Reds.
Advice: Megill ran into trouble and nearly blew the save, but Blake Perkins saved the day with a game-ending outfield assist. He's converted seven straight saves since blowing a chance against the Marlins on May 20 and is now 13 for 14 this season. Megill owns a 26:7 K:BB and a 2.14 ERA through 21 innings. Eflin did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against Atlanta. He struck out seven.
Advice: Eflin entered the sixth inning with a four-run lead, but after retiring the first two batters in the frame, he allowed four consecutive singles and was removed one out shy of completing six full innings. The seven strikeouts marked a season high for Eflin, who had failed to record more than three strikeouts during any of his previous five starts. He'll carry a 4.12 ERA and 1.17 WHIP into his next start, currently slated to take place over the weekend when the Rays travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates. Rotowire.comYesterday, 7:29 pm
Trevor Megill pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the save against the Reds on Sunday.
Advice: Megill’s save was his 13th of the year filling in for Devin Williams. In the ninth inning, with two men on and two outs, Megill gave up a single to Santiago Espinal on a line drive to center. However, outfielder Blake Perkins threw out Stuart Fairchild at home to end the game. It ended up being a scoreless inning for Megill, who lowered his ERA to 2.14 on the season. Zach Eflin allowed three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings on Sunday against the Braves. He allowed seven hits while walking one and striking out seven.
Advice: Eflin continues to flash the brilliance he showed last season while faltering in key moments. He cruised through five innings after a lead-off home run by Jarred Kelenic but unraveled with two outs in the sixth. It’s frustrating to see him fall one out shy of the quality start while the bullpen blew his win despite objectively pitching well against Atlanta. His ERA sits at 4.12 on the season. Ian Happ went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, run scored, and stolen base on Sunday against the Cardinals.
Advice: Happ, like the rest of the Cubs, has not been hitting his best of late. He ignited both of their mini rallies in this one, scoring their only run and making Ryan Helsley sweat in the ninth inning. Hopefully this can jump start a hot streak in what’s been a mediocre season. RotoworldYesterday, 1:05 pm
