    • Slugs go-ahead homer in extras
Martinez went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and two walks in Monday's 9-7 win against the Nationals.

Advice: The New York designated hitter blasted a titanic 420-foot homer off Hunter Harvey in the 10th inning to break the tie. The round tripper was a welcome sight for Martinez, as he entered this contest on a bit of a cold spell, slashing .211/.333/.342 across 47 plate appearances in his previous 10 games with just one homer. The veteran power hitter now sports a .278 with 10 home runs, 37 RBI and 22 runs scored in 209 at-bats overall. Rotowire.com Today, 8:07 pm

    • J.D. Martinez homers in 10th to propel Mets
J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer in the 10th and walked twice Monday as the Mets bested the Nationals 9-7.

Advice: This was a 3-3 game through nine, but Martinez broke the game open with his homer off Hunter Harvey in the 10th. The Mets went on to score three more times in the frame, which proved important after the Nationals came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Martinez’s homer was his 10th in 239 plate appearances. Rotoworld Today, 7:32 pm

    • Nightengale: Rival execs say Alonso is staying put
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, rival team execs believe it’s more likely that Pete Alonso is not traded at the deadline.

Advice: Nightengale mentioned that “rival teams who have expressed interest” in Alonso are “convinced” he will “definitely stay put as long as the Mets are within five games of the wild-card race.” As of now, the Mets are just two games back and are 12-4 over their last 16 games. If the Mets do keep Alonso beyond the trade deadline, they will need to then decide how badly they want to extend him, but it would take one of the biggest power bats off the trade block this season. • Productive in Sunday's loss
Crawford went 1-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base in a loss to to the Twins on Sunday.

Advice: Crawford reached safely for the 10th straight game with his single, pushing his average to a solid .263 over that span. The stolen base was Crawford's fourth of the season, his highest total since the 2020 campaign. While the veteran shortstop's current stretch of hitting is easily his most productive of the season, Crawford is still sitting on a .215 average and .674 OPS across 61 games. • Contributes RBI, steal in loss
Polanco went 1-for-4 with an RBI single and a stolen base in a loss to the Twins on Sunday.

Advice: Polanco came through with a clutch knock against his former team in the seventh inning, plating Luke Raley to knot the score at 3-3. The veteran infielder, who's now hit safely in four straight, also added his second steal of the campaign, but he couldn't capitalize on another RBI opportunity in the ninth when he left the bases loaded on a game-ending flyout. • Justin Verlander has started playing catch
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Verlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,” but the team has said that he’ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely. • Handed loss in St. Louis
Grene (5-4) allowed a run on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Cardinals.

Advice: Greene kept St. Louis off the board until Alec Burleson knocked an RBI single in the fifth inning. While that was the only run charged against Greene, Cincinnati was shut out, leaving him with the tough-luck loss. While he needed 95 pitches to get through 4.2 frames, he managed to force 16 swinging strikes. Greene has failed to complete five innings in two straight outings and has just one quality start over his last six appearances. He'll carry a 3.70 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be at home against Detroit. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:25 pm

    • Resumes throwing
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Sunday that Verlander (neck) resumed playing catch from 60 feet Sunday and "felt good," Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The 41-year-old's return to throwing is an encouraging development after he was shut down for a bit while recovering from neck soreness. Given the prolonged shutdown period, Verlander shouldn't be expected to return from the injured list when first eligible this week and will likely need to make a minor-league rehab start prior to being activated. • Greene allows one run in loss to Cardinals Sunday
Hunter Greene allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss against the Cardinals on Sunday.

Advice: Greene gave up four hits, walked two and struck out six. It was certainly better than his last start where he allowed six runs, but the Cardinals worked up his pitch count and he was unable to complete even five innings. Greene has a 3.70 ERA and 4.29 xFIP on the season. The 24-year-old right-hander is set to face the Tigers at home next weekend.
