      Gil (9-3) took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two batters over 4.1 innings.

      Advice: Gil was stung by both hard hits and walks -- three of the four knocks he allowed went for extra bases, and he also surrendered four free passes. His final two walks were particularly detrimental, as both runners came around to score following his departure. Gil has now put forward two straight poor outings, giving up 12 runs over 5.2 innings across his past two starts. He had a 2.02 ERA and was being mentioned in discussions about AL Cy Young Award contenders after a June 14 win against Boston, but his subsequent struggles have increased is ERA by over a run to 3.15.       Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Milwaukee, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four.

      Advice: Eovaldi had a troublesome third inning, allowing Jackson Chourio to reach on a leadoff single before letting Christian Yelich and Willy Adames get on base with two outs, leading to a Jake Bauers grand slam. The other run charged to Eovaldi came in the fourth frame, when Derek Hill couldn't make a diving catch in center field, allowing Chourio to get all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Eovaldi's five runs allowed tied his season high, and he's allowed a home run in five consecutive starts. Overall, he owns a 3.45 ERA and 74 strikeouts across 73.0 innings.     • Luis Gil struggles again in loss
      Luis Gil labored through 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Mets. He allowed five earned runs with four walks and just two strikeouts.

      Advice: There’s been a hard shift in Gil’s season over the past week. He gave up 18 ER in his first 80 innings and 12 ER in his last 5 2/3 frames. He looked uncomfortable and weirdly enough, these last two starts he threw his lowest percentage of fastballs and two of his three highest percentages of changeups in any start this season. It’s important to note that he threw only 136 2/3 innings between 2021 and 2023, so the 85 2/3 he’s already thrown this season are already substantial given his lengthy injury history.

    • Gavin Stone tosses complete-game shutout in win
      Gavin Stone tossed a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts in a win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

      Advice: Stone made perhaps his best start of his career Wednesday against the White Sox, going a career-high nine scoreless innings for his first complete-game shutout. He scattered four hits and did not walk a batter, tossing 73-of-103 pitches for strikes with seven strikeouts. The 25-year-old right-hander has been outstanding on the season, posting a 2.73 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 70/25 K/BB ratio across 89 innings.       Lane Thomas smacked a two-run double, drew a pair of walks and scored a run on Wednesday as the Nationals fell to the Padres in San Diego.

      Advice: Thomas finally broke through and got the Nationals on the board with a two-run double off of Tom Cosgrove in the ninth inning. He scored later in the frame on a two-run double by Luis Garcia, but the five-run rally in the ninth still fell short. The 28-year-old outfielder was also cut down attempting to steal second base in the ballgame.       Nathan Eovaldi surrendered five runs in seven innings Wednesday in a no-decision versus the Brewers.

      Advice: Jake Bauers’ third-inning grand slam accounted for most of the damage. It was actually the first slam ever surrendered by Eovaldi; the league had hit just .227/.228/.267 in 79 career plate appearances with the bases loaded.
