Alvarez had been mired in a bad slump coming into Thursday, going 3-for-32 over his past nine games since hitting two homers against Colorado on April 27.       Yordan Alvarez went 2-for-5 with a solo homer on Thursday, powering the Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Yankees.

      Advice: Alvarez kicked off the scoring in the opening frame by taking Yankees starter Marcus Stroman deep for his eighth round-tripper of the season. It was the first time he’s left the yard since a two-homer explosion back on April 27, snapping a nine-game homerless drought.       Greene did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on four hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out six.

      Advice: Greene's final line ultimately could've looked a lot worse after he issued a season-high five walks. The 24-year-old Greene has given up nine free passes over his last two starts (10.2 innings), though he's managed to hold opponents to just three runs in that span. Overall, he's 1-2 on the season with a 1.24 WHIP and 53:21 K:BB through eight starts (45.1 innings). Greene's currently slated for a rematch with the Diamondbacks on the road in his next outing.       The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Athletics’s asking price for flame-throwing closer Mason Miller is steep.

      Advice: Rosenthal adds that a team source indicates no team has come close to meeting Oakland’s astronomical asking price. The 25-year-old starter-turned-closer has been phenomenal this season, with a microscopic 1.10 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 33/4 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings (13 appearances). It’s entirely possible that no team will come close to coughing up enough prospect capital to make a deal happen, but Miller figures to be at the epicenter of rumors leading up to the trade deadline later this summer.     • Hunter Greene strikes out six, walks five in loss
      Hunter Greene surrendered three runs in five innings with six strikeouts in a no-decision Thursday versus the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Greene allowed four hits, but he also issued five walks with 40-of-84 pitches landing outside of the strike zone. The right-hander had his swing-and-miss stuff, and he was able to work around those free passes with a scoreless second-through-fifth inning.       Javier (neck) will rejoin the Astros' rotation Saturday in Detroit, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Javier will have gone nearly a month in between starts for the Astros when he toes the rubber Saturday, having been sidelined with a neck problem. He's ready to roll now, though, following one rehab start with Double-A Corpus Christi which saw him allow three runs over 3.1 frames.       Advice: Vaughn collected multiple hits for the first time in his last seven starts, during which he's gone just for 5-for-25 with two doubles.       Miller fired two perfect innings during which he recorded four strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader against the Rangers on Wednesday.

      Advice: Miller had last taken the hill May 1, so manager Mark Kotsay opted to give his closer some much-needed work with the Athletics up by five runs. The extended layoff didn't seem to faze Miller in the least, as he located 24 of 32 pitches for strikes in a relatively efficient showing. The hard-throwing right-hander lowered his ERA and WHIP to 1.10 and 0.67, respectively, and with the Athletics much more competitive than expected thus far, Miller's prospects for save opportunities over the long term are brighter than when the season began, despite the recent stretch of inactivity.       De La Cruz went 0-for-4 with two stolen bases in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: After reaching base on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning, De La Cruz promptly stole second and third base, but the Reds couldn't bring him home. The 22-year-old phenom is up to 21 steals on the season, tops in the majors by a healthy margin -- second place is a three-way tie at 14 between Ronald Acuna, Brice Turang and Jose Caballero. De La Cruz has gone 0-for-15 over the last four games, but he still sports a .254/.356/.516 slash line on the season with eight homers, 19 RBI and 27 runs in 36 contests.
