  • FA Yasiel Puig being represented by Rachel Luba
Yasiel Puig is now being represented by agent Rachel Luba of Luba Sports.

Advice: Luba also reps Trevor Bauer, the top starting pitcher on the open market this winter. Puig had been with Dan Horwits and Cesar Suare of the Beverly Hills Sports Council but apparently cut ties after failing to latch on with a team during the 2020 campaign. He had an agreement in place with the Braves in July, but it was scrapped after he tested positive for COVID-19. The 29-year-old free agent outfielder registered a .785 OPS with 24 home runs and 19 stolen bases in 149 games (611 plate appearances) between the Reds and Indians in 2019. Yesterday, 5:25 pm

  • Thames has interest from MLB, NPB, KBO teams
According to Jon Morosi of, free agent Eric Thames is drawing interest from MLB, NPB, and KBO teams.

Advice: Thames struggled to a .203/.300/.317 batting line in 41 games this past season with the Nationals, who then declined his $4 million option for 2021 late last month. But the 34-year-old slugger should do pretty well for himself this winter given all the avenues he's open to for possible offers. Thames spent the 2014-2016 seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) before joining the Brewers ahead of the 2017 campaign. Yesterday, 3:42 pm

  • Marlins add Jerar Encarnacion to 40-man roster
Marlins purchased the contract of OF Jerar Encarnacion.

Advice: The 23-year-old outfielder had a breakthrough season offensively in 2019, slashing .276/.331/.425 with 16 homers, 71 RBI and six stolen bases between Class-A Clinton and High-A Jupiter in 2019. He followed that up by hitting .269/.315/.433 with three homers and 16 RBI in 19 games during the Arizona Fall League. He's still a couple of years away from challenging for a spot on the Marlins' big league roster, but Encarnacion is an intriguing bat to watch. Friday, 10:01 pm

  • Rays designate Hunter Renfroe for assignment
Rays designated OF Hunter Renfroe for assignment.

Advice: It had been speculated that the cost-cutting Rays could consider non-tendering Renfroe this offseason in order to shed some payroll -- as he's projected to earn more than $3.5 million in arbitration this winter. Still, it's somewhat surprising to see the Rays give up on their starting right fielder after just one miserable season. Renfroe slashed a miserable .156/.252/.393 with eight homers, 22 RBI and a 37/14 K/BB ratio in 139 plate appearances for the American League Champions. He's just a season removed from slugging 33 homers in 494 plate appearances though, so there should be interest in his services from around the league. Friday, 7:43 pm

  • Pirates designate Jose Osuna for assignment
Pirates designate INF/OF Jose Osuna for assignment.

Advice: This move comes as a bit of a surprise, as Osuna had a very productive season offensively in 2019 before seeing his production fall off of a cliff in 2020. During the truncated season, the 27-year-old slashed just .205/.244/.397 with four homers, 11 RBI and a 16/4 K/BB ratio over 82 plate appearances. It seems likely that he'll refuse the outright assignment and explore his options on the free agent market. Friday, 5:11 pm

  • Report: Nats mulling trade for Kris Bryant
Jon Morosi of reports that the Nationals are considering a trade for Kris Bryant.

Advice: They're also showing interest in DJ LeMahieu, as Morosi reported earlier Friday. The feeling seems to be that the Cubs will trade at least one big bat this offseason, and Bryant's name has popped up in trade rumors for a couple years now. Bryant is coming off a dreadful 2020 season which saw him post just a .644 OPS and he's likely to net close to $20 million in his final year of arbitration eligibility, so it's not the best time to be trading him. That said, the former MVP had a .903 OPS with 31 homers in his last full season, so a bounce-back seems reasonable if he's healthy. Friday, 2:17 pm

  • Angels add Brandon Marsh to roster
Angels purchased the contract of OF Brandon Marsh.

Advice: Marsh, 22, hit .300/.383/.428 with seven home runs and 18 stolen bases over 96 games at the Double-A level in 2019. He's viewed as the Halos' top prospect and could push to debut at some point in 2021. Friday, 12:23 pm

  • Greg Deichmann added to 40-man roster
Athletics purchased the contract of OF Greg Deichmann.

Advice: Deichmann hasn't hit much and has had trouble staying healthy in pro ball, although he did lead the Arizona Fall League with nine homers last year. He's now protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Friday, 10:33 am

  • Report: Cubs could 'move a number of players''s Mark Feinsand cites "a number of rival executives around the league" who believe the Cubs "will move a number of players in the coming months."

Advice: Kris Bryant and Javier Baez are the names mentioned most frequently by these execs, per Feinsand, but Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo are set to become free agents after the 2021 season as well, and Willson Contreras is headed for free agency after 2022. “They are open to all kinds of stuff,” one NL executive said. "They aren’t a group afraid to make big moves." It could be an offseason of tough decision-making for Jed Hoyer, who became the Cubs' front office head this week with Theo Epstein announcing his resignation. Thursday, 10:50 am

  • Brandon Dixon released for opportunity in Japan
    Tigers released INF/OF Brandon Dixon.

Advice: Dixon is apparently signing with a team in Japan. The versatile 28-year-old posted a decent .725 OPS with 15 home runs and 52 RBI in 117 games with Detroit in 2019 before getting only 14 plate appearances in 2020. Thursday, 8:08 am

  • Slater (elbow) expected to be 100 percent for ST
Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi told reporters Wednesday that he expects Austin Slater (elbow) to be 100 percent for spring training.

Advice: Slater dealt with a flexor strain in his right arm which limited him to designated hitter duties down the stretch of this past season. However, he should be ready to go after an offseason of rest. Slater was a surprise fantasy contributor when healthy in 2020, posting a .914 OPS with five homers and eight stolen bases. • Cody Bellinger undergoes surgery on right shoulder
Cody Bellinger underwent surgery Tuesday to repair his dislocated right shoulder.

Advice: The news was first reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan, who adds that Bellinger will need around 10 weeks of rest and rehab but should be fully recovered by the start of spring training in late February. Bellinger dislocated the shoulder while celebrating his big seventh-inning go-ahead home run during the Dodgers' NLCS Game 7 victory over the Braves. He then went 3-for-22 (.136) in six World Series games against the Rays. Tuesday, 2:28 pm
