  • Matt Szczur has four hits off bench in win
Matt Szczur came off the bench to go 4-for-5 with a triple and a double Friday as the Padres beat the Giants 12-9.

Advice: His fourth hit was an RBI single that gave the Padres the lead in the 11th. It made him the first player to get four hits off the bench since Paul Janish did so for the Reds on July 4, 2010. No Padre had ever accomplished the feat. Szczur entered the game in the fourth as part of a double-switch and doubled to lead off the following half-inning. He had two chances to become the first player ever to pick up a cycle off the bench, but he couldn't come up with the homer. Today, 12:16 am
  • Jose Pirela triples, doubles in four-hit game
Jose Pirela finished 4-for-6 with triple, a double and three RBI on Friday.

Advice: He also walked in the 11-inning victory. Pirela is batting .296 with 15 doubles and five homers in just 152 at-bats. Plate discipline is an issue, and he's miscast as a leadoff man for the Padres. Still, he's been the team's best hitter since his callup. Today, 12:12 am
  • Carlos Asuaje knocks in three
Carlos Asuaje went 4-for-7 with three RBI against the Giants in Friday's 11-inning game.

Advice: Asuaje was a disappointment in Triple-A this year, posting a .741 OPS while playing in an extremely friendly hitting environment at El Paso. He's done quite a bit better in the majors thus far, coming in at .830 in 84 at-bats. If it keeps up, he should continue to start at second after Yangervis Solarte returns, with Solarte returning to his old position. Unfortunately, his lack of power and stolen base ability still leaves him with little fantasy upside. Today, 12:09 am
  • A.J. Pollock homers, triples in Arizona's win
A.J. Pollock missed the cycle by a single and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Diamondbacks edged the Nationals 6-5 on Friday.

Advice: Pollock tripled off Enny Romero in the ninth and came around to score on Brandon Drury's single to right, ending the game. In all, Pollock scored three times tonight. He's batting .279 with two homers and four doubles in 43 at-bats since coming off the disabled list on July 4. Yesterday, 10:33 pm
  • Gordon drives in three runs vs. White Sox
Alex Gordon went 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBI, and a run scored Friday versus the White Sox.

Advice: Gordon got the Royals on the board with an RBI single in the second inning and later tied things up with a two-run double in the fifth. After going without a multi-hit game in 15 straight games, he has now done so in consecutive games. The 33-year-old has a disappointing .203/.295/.307 batting line. Yesterday, 10:06 pm
  • Bell has four-hit, four RBI night vs. Rockies
Josh Bell went 4-for-6 with four RBI and a run scored Friday versus the Rockies.

Advice: It was the first four-hit game of his career. Bell had a single, a double, and a triple, so only a home run was missing from a possible cycle. The 24-year-old doesn’t stand out on the surface with his .248 batting average, but he has 17 homers and a respectable .807 OPS through 96 games. Yesterday, 9:45 pm
  • Mercer connects for two-run homer
Jordy Mercer launched a two-run homer Friday versus the Rockies.

Advice: It was his only hit in five at-bats on the day, but at least it was a big one. Mercer has nine home runs through 92 games, just three shy of his career-high from 2013. He already has a career-best .758 OPS. Yesterday, 9:44 pm
  • Dietrich hitless against Reds
Derek Dietrich went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday’s win over the Reds.

Advice: Filling in for the injured Martin Prado (knee) at third base, Dietrich is batting just .239/.316/.374 through 79 games this season. The 28-year-old had an .800 OPS in 218 games between 2015-2016, so he’s capable of being useful in deeper mixed fantasy leagues. Yesterday, 9:19 pm

  • Mahtook collects two hits as Tigers beat KC
Mikie Mahtook went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored as the Tigers topped the Royals on Friday evening.

Advice: Mahtook is getting a chance to play everyday, even against right-handed pitching, since the club dealt J.D. Martinez to the Diamondbacks. He has been terrific overall this season, slashing .289/.309/.478 with six homers, 21 RBI and a stolen base. Yesterday, 9:00 pm
  • Phillips slugs solo homer against Phillies
Brett Phillips slugged a solo homer in Friday’s loss to the Phillies.

Advice: It was his second homer in seven games since his call-up earlier this month. With Keon Broxton in a miserable slump, there’s opportunity in this outfield at the moment. Of course, it’s just a matter of time before Lewis Brinson gets another shot here. Yesterday, 7:35 pm
  • Brock Stassi optioned to Triple-A
Phillies optioned 1B/OF Brock Stassi to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Stassi has put up an ugly .167/.278/.295 batting line this season. He's clearing out to make room for Howie Kendrick's return from the disabled list. Yesterday, 11:25 am

  • Howie Kendrick activated from disabled list
Phillies activated INF/OF Howie Kendrick from the 10-day disabled list.

Advice: Kendrick played just one rehab game and is feeling well enough to rejoin the big league roster. He's missed the last three-plus weeks with a strained left hamstring. The Phillies will be auditioning Kendrick for a trade before the end of the month. Yesterday, 11:24 am

  • Matt Olson recalled from Triple-A
Athletics recalled 1B/OF Matt Olson from Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: Olson has batted .184/.310/.449 with four homers over 49 at-bats during his time in the majors this season. He should get some chances in right field. Yesterday, 9:02 am
  • Anthony Recker called up from Triple-A
Braves purchased the contract of C Anthony Recker from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: He'll serve as Tyler Flowers' backup this weekend while Kurt Suzuki (bereavement) is away. Recker is a .199/.283/.348 career hitter at the major league level. Yesterday, 6:10 am
  • Danny Valencia picks up pair of hits vs. NYY
Danny Valencia went 2-for-4 in Thursday's loss to the Yankees.

Advice: The Mariners collected 10 hits as a team, but managed just one run in the game. This was Valencia's third two-hit performance in his last five games and he is now slashing .273/.332/.435 with 11 homers and 48 RBI for the season as a whole. Thursday, 10:42 pm

  • A.J. Pollock getting day off against Reds
A.J. Pollock is getting the day off Thursday against the Reds.

Advice: Gregor Blanco will start in center field and bat eighth, with Daniel Descalso taking a turn at leadoff. It's just a routine day of maintenance for Pollock. Thursday, 7:32 am
  • Mikie Mahtook hits game-tying homer
Mikie Mahtook hit a two-run homer off Kelvin Herrera in the top of the ninth to tie Wednesday's game against the Royals.

Advice: Mahtook entered the game because a left-handed reliever was on in the seventh. It wouldn't have been the Tigers' preference to have him face the righty Herrera in the ninth, but it sure worked out well, with Mahtook hitting his sixth homer of the year. He's a platoon player at the moment, but something close to full-time play is within reach in the J.D. Martinez-less Tigers outfield. Wednesday, 8:57 pm
  • Josh Bell not in lineup against Brewers
Josh Bell is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers.

Advice: Bell collided with Eric Thames at first base on Tuesday, but came out of that without lingering health concern. Still, the Pirates will give him a rest day just to make sure everything is on the level. Jose Osuna is starting at first base and hitting fourth in his place. Daily Slant: With Bell out of the lineup, Jose Osuna is now a viable value play across all formats hitting out of the clean-up spot against Zach Davies. While his batted ball profile isn't eye-popping, Osuna does own a healthy .233 ISO against RHP on the season and being slotted around McCutchen and Polanco should provide him with some solid run producing opportunities. Osuna's price tag makes it easier to afford an arm like Jacob deGrom, and the Pirates actually have one of the higher team totals on the main slate. Wednesday, 2:14 pm
  • Kendrick (hamstring) cleared for rehab games
Howie Kendrick (hamstring) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Double-A Reading.

Advice: And it sounds like he might only play a game or two in the minors before the Phillies activate him off the disabled list. Kendrick is one of the few attractive trade chips for the rebuilding Phils, and the deadline is under two weeks away. The versatile veteran was batting .349/.403/.476 with two homers and eight stolen bases in 33 games when he landed on the disabled list June 28 with a left hamstring strain. Wednesday, 7:15 am

  • Carlos Asuaje scores pair of runs
Carlos Asuaje finished 2-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and two runs scored in Tuesday's road game against the Rockies.

Advice: Asuaje's homer was his first in the majors, coming in the seventh inning off of reliever Jordan Lyles. He has back-to-back multi-hit games to raise his average 29 points, giving him a slash line of .315/.367/.452. Tuesday, 9:57 pm
  • Kendrick (hamstring) nears rehab assignment
Howie Kendrick (hamstring) could begin a rehab assignment by the end of this week.

Advice: Kendrick has been cleared to resume all baseball activities after missing the last three weeks with a strained left hamstring. "I feel better," Kendrick said. "I’m not quite there yet, but I feel better." The Phillies would like to deal Kendrick prior to the trade deadline, so they figure to push him to make it back for a few games before the end of the month. Tuesday, 6:33 am

  • Mike Mahtook hits fifth homer
Mikie Mahtook went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer against the Royals' Jason Vargas on Monday.

Advice: Mahtook seems to be fulfilling his potential with his new team in Detroit. It's not much potential -- he's just a platoon outfielder against lefties -- but he is hitting a respectable .276 with five homers in 145 at-bats. Monday, 8:55 pm
  • Brett Phillips mashes two-run homer in loss
Brett Phillips went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit two-run homer in Sunday's loss to the Phillies.

Advice: Phillips rocked a two-run home run off Jeremy Hellickson in the fifth inning. This was his first home run -- and first extra-base hit -- in five games with the Brew Crew. There is no fantasy upside, here. Sunday, 2:53 pm
  • Danny Valencia clubs three-run homer in win
Danny Valencia clubbed a three-run homer as the Mariners topped the White Sox on Sunday afternoon.

Advice: Valencia also collected a ground-rule double in the contest, finishing the day 2-for-5. His three-run shot off of Derek Holland tied the score at 5-5 in the fifth inning. Valencia has rebounded after a slow start and is now slashing .271/.331/.428 with 10 homers and 46 RBI on the season. Sunday, 2:49 pm

  • Matt Szczur belts third homer in home win
Matt Szczur finished 2-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Saturday's game against the Giants.

Advice: Szczur welcomed Madison Bumgarner back from the 10-day disabled list with a solo shot in the third inning. After managing just two hits over 27 at-bats across 24 games from June 10-July 8, Szczur has posted back-to-back multi-hit games. Saturday, 11:38 pm
  • Pollock goes 2-for-3 with a steal and a run
A.J. Pollock went 2-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's loss to the Braves.

Advice: He led off the game with a single and came around to score on a Chris Owings single to right. Pollock has played in only 45 games this season after missing six weeks with a groin injury. He has a .288 batting average with three home runs, 28 runs, 12 RBI and 14 stolen bases. He is capable of being one of the best leadoff men in baseball when fully healthy. Saturday, 9:03 pm
  • Josh Bell blasts first career walk-off homer
Josh Bell blasted the first walk-off home run of his career on Friday, propelling the Pirates to a 5-2 victory over the Cardinals.

Advice: Bell got the Pirates on the board with a run-scoring single off of Mike Leake in the third inning. He then did his damage off of Seung-Hwan Oh in the ninth after Adam Frazier had doubled and Andrew McCutchen had been walked intentionally to bring him to the dish. The rookie first baseman finished the night 2-for-3 plus a pair of walks and is hitting .243/.328/.484 with 17 homers and 48 RBI. Friday, 7:38 pm
  • Brewers recall Brett Phillips from Triple-A
Brewers recalled OF Brett Phillips from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Advice: Reliever Michael Blazek was sent down in the corresponding move. Phillips didn't show much in his first stint with the Brewers this year (2-for-10 with seven strikeouts), though that was an extremely small sample size. He gives the Brewers some outfield depth behind starters Ryan Braun, Keon Broxton and Domingo Santana. Thursday, 3:38 pm
