  • Casey McGehee leaves MLB for Japan
Casey McGehee has signed a one-year contract with Japan's Yomiuri Giants.

Advice: The deal includes a club option. McGehee spent most of 2016 with Triple-A Toledo, but did log 30 games at the big league level with the Tigers while filling in for injured third baseman Nick Castellanos. The 34-year-old holds a .258 average over 2,798 major league at-bats. Yesterday, 6:04 pm

Braves signed OF Lane Adams to a minor league deal.

Advice: The 27-year-old speedster hit .266/.342/.388 with 10 homers, 56 RBI and 44 stolen bases in 121 minor league games between the Cubs and Yankees in 2016. He makes for a nice depth signing for the Braves. Yesterday, 11:33 am

  • Reds don't tender contract to Ramon Cabrera
    Reds non-tendered C Ramon Cabrera.

Advice: The 27-year-old backstop did a respectable job as Tucker Barnhart's primary backup in 2016, slashing .246/.279/.357 with three homers and 23 RBI in 185 plate appearances. He'll look for another opportunity on the free agent market. Yesterday, 7:35 am

  • Reds non-tender Gabby Guerrero on Friday
    Reds non-tendered OF Gabby Guerrero.

Advice: Guerrero, who is the nephew of former MLB star Vladimir Guerrero, was claimed off of waivers from the Diamondbacks last week and now finds himself as a free agent. He struggled with the bat in 2016, slashing .234/.281/.383 across two minor league levels, but possesses enough talent that he should find another club willing to give him a shot. Yesterday, 7:30 am

  • Rays do not tender contract to Ryan Brett
    Rays non-tendered INF Ryan Brett.

Advice: The 25-year-old infielder missed the entire 2016 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He'll look to latch on elsewhere on a minor league deal. Yesterday, 7:15 am

  • Angels non-tender Gregorio Petit on Friday
    Angels non-tendered INF Gregorio Petit.

Advice: The 31-year-old infielder is now a free agent and will look for work elsewhere. He hit just .245/.299/.348 with two homers and 17 RBI in 223 plate appearances with the Angels in 2016. Yesterday, 7:09 am

  • Padres sign Dusty Coleman to minors contract
Padres signed INF Dusty Coleman to a minor league contract.

Advice: The 29-year-old spent the 2016 campaign in the Royals' organization where he slashed .244/.302/.418 with six homers and 26 RBI in 63 games primarily at Triple-A Omaha. He'll add organizational infield depth for the Padres. Yesterday, 7:01 am

  • Rockies do not tender contract to Cardullo
    Rockies non-tendered 1B Stephen Cardullo.

Advice: The 29-year-old makes for an interesting low-cost investment on the free agent market or as a non-roster invitee. He slashed an impressive .308/.367/.522 with 17 homers, 72 RBI and six stolen bases in 452 plate appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2016. Yesterday, 5:45 am

  • Pirates non-tender Eric Fryer on Friday
    Pirates non-tendered C Eric Fryer.

Advice: The 31-year-old backstop hit .267/.336/.319 with no homers and 13 RBI in 133 plate appearances between the Cardinals and Pirates in 2016. He will look for another opportunity on the open market but may have to settle for a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Yesterday, 5:22 am
  • Giants agree to one-year deal with Adrianza
Giants avoided arbitration with INF Ehire Adrianza, agreeing to a one-year contract.

Advice: The deal will pay Adrianza $600,000 if he's in the big leagues or $300,000 if he spends the season in the minor leagues. The 27-year-old appeared in 40 games for the Giants in 2016, slashing .254/.299/.381 with a pair of homers and seven RBI in 63 at-bats. Friday, 6:27 pm

  • Padres non-tender backstop Hector Sanchez
    Padres non-tendered C Hector Sanchez.

Advice: While not the biggest name of the six players that the Padres non-tendered on Friday, Sanchez could make for an intriguing option on the free agent market. The 27-year-old has hit .241/.278/.354 with 13 homers and 95 RBI over 646 plate appearances in his major league career. Friday, 6:04 pm

  • D'Backs agree to two-year deal with Mathis
Nick Piecoro of AZCentral Sports reports that the Diamondbacks have agreed to a two-year, $4 million contract with Jeff Mathis.

Advice: It seems like the Diamondbacks are looking to cut payroll this offseason, which prompted the non-tendering of Welington Castillo and the signing of the veteran Mathis. He's likely to share time behind the dish with Chris Herrmann and perhaps Oscar Hernandez, but is a poor bet for any type of fantasy production even in the hitter-friendly home ballpark. Mathis is a career .197/.254/.308 hitter in 2273 career plate appearances. Friday, 5:44 pm

  • Blue Jays outright Andy Burns to Triple-A
Blue Jays sent INF/OF Andy Burns outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: The 26-year-old utilityman passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as organizational depth for the Jays. He appeared in 10 games for the big league club in 2016, going hitless in six at-bats. Friday, 5:31 pm

  • Diamondbacks agree to deal with Jeff Mathis
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Diamondbacks have agreed to a contract with free agent backstop Jeff Mathis.

Advice: Nick Piecoro of AZCentral Sports was first to report that the two sides had been in discussions, and now Heyman reports that they have reached a deal. The Diamondbacks now have three catchers on the roster, with Mathis joining Chris Herrmann and Oscar Hernandez. Friday, 4:36 pm

  • Diamondbacks have had contact with Mathis
Nick Piecoro of AZCentral Sports reporst that the Diamondbacks have been in contact with free agent catcher Jeff Mathis.

Advice: The Diamondbacks surprisingly opted to non-tender Welington Castillo on Friday and are now in the market for depth behind the plate. Mathis, 33, hit just .238/.267/.33 with a pair of homers and 15 RBI in 126 at-bats for the Marlins in 2016. He'd simply be a depth signing for the D'Backs and shouldn't be counted on to be the full-time starter behind the plate. Friday, 4:25 pm

  • Lawrie agrees to pay cut, avoids arbitration
White Sox and INF Brett Lawrie avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.

Advice: Lawrie will see a massive drop in salary from the $4.125 million that he made in 2016 after hitting just .248/.310/.413 with 12 homers and 36 RBI in 94 games in his first season with the White Sox. Still just 26-years-old, Lawrie is expected to be fully healthy and ready to go for the start of spring training and could represent a nice buy-low opportunity in the late rounds of fantasy drafts. • Rangers do not tender contract to Hoying
    Rangers non-tendered OF Jared Hoying.

Advice: Merely an auxiliary piece on their roster, the 27-year-old appeared in only 39 games for the Rangers in 2016 slashing a troublesome .217/.265/.261 with no homers and five RBI in 49 plate appearances. He'll look to latch on elsewhere as a free agent. Friday, 3:45 pm

  • Reds claim Gabby Guerrero off waivers
Reds claimed OF Gabby Guerrero off waivers from the Diamondbacks.

Advice: The nephew of Vladimir Guerrero, Gabby batted just .234/.281/.383 between Double- and Triple-A this past season. He's had back-to-back disappointing seasons but will turn just 23 in a couple weeks. Obviously the Reds think he's still got a shot to make an impact. Monday, 1:04 pm
