• Returns to Atlanta
Murfee (elbow) signed a one-year, non-guaranteed split contract with Atlanta on Wednesday.

Advice: After being claimed off waivers by Atlanta on Nov. 14 and non-tendered by the team three days later, Murfee will officially remain with Atlanta for the 2024 campaign. Murfee holds a 2.70 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in his career across 83.1 big-league innings, though a surgery in June to repair a torn UCL puts him at risk of missing the entire 2024 campaign. • Finds work with Guardians
Barria signed a minor-league contract with the Guardians on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Barria rejected an outright assignment from the Angels and became a free agent earlier in the offseason, and he'll now attempt to carve out a role for himself with the Guardians. The 27-year-old righty posted a 5.68 ERA and 1.47 WHIP last year -- a sharp decline from his 2.61 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 2022. Barria's deal includes an invitation to major-league spring training, and a good spring could be enough for him to earn a spot in Cleveland's Opening Day bullpen. Rotowire.com 28 minutes ago

  • Guardians ink RHP Jaime Barria to minors contract
Guardians signed RHP Jaime Barria to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Barria heads to Cleveland to compete in spring training for a spot on the Guardians’ season-opening roster. The 27-year-old right-hander struggled to a lackluster 5.68 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 62/30 K/BB ratio across 82 1/3 innings (34 appearances, six starts) this past season for the Angels. He’ll likely operate in a versatile swingman-type role for Cleveland this upcoming season. Rotoworld 41 minutes ago

  • Félix Bautista earns AL Reliever of the Year Award
Félix Bautista was named the 2023 American League Reliever of the Year.

Advice: Bautista takes home the top honor in the America League, despite missing the final five weeks of the 2023 campaign due to a partially-torn UCL in his right elbow, after posting a sublime 1.48 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 110/26 K/BB ratio across 61 innings (56 appearances). The hard-throwing 28-year-old right-hander will likely remain sidelined until the outset of the 2025 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last month. Rotoworld Today, 3:30 pm

  • Report: Emilio Pagán’s Reds deal worth $16 million
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal says Emilio Pagán’s two-year deal with the Reds is worth $16 million and includes an opt out after the first year.

Advice: It doesn’t seem like Pagán is a player a team should have to give an opt out, too, but then, it’s not easy for the Reds to sign pitchers, given their ballpark. Rotoworld Today, 10:14 am
  • Agrees to deal with Reds
The Reds signed Pagan to a one-year, $8 million contract with an $8 million player option for 2025 on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Pagan held a 2.99 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 65:21 K:BB over 69.1 innings for the Twins in 2023, which was good enough to nab a multi-year pact on the open market. The 32-year-old was able to keep the home run ball in check in 2023, but it's been a major issue for him in the past. Given his new home park, that could be a problem. Pagan would appear in line for setup duties ahead of closer Alexis Diaz. Rotowire.com Today, 9:38 am
  • Report: Reds sign Emilio Pagán to two-year deal
The Reds and Emilio Pagán have come to terms on a two-year contract, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Advice: This seems like a bad fit because of Pagán’s career 30% groundball rate, but the Reds seem to think it’ll be worth living with the homers. Pagán was excellent last season, finishing with a 2.99 ERA and a 65/21 K/BB ratio in 69 1/3 innings for the Twins. It was, however, his first time with a sub-4.40 ERA since 2019, and the 24% strikeout rate was actually the lowest of his career. The Reds will put him in a setup role in front of Alexis Díaz. • Reds showing interest in setup man Emilio Pagán
The Reds are showing interest in Emilio Pagán, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

Advice: Heyman adds that the Reds are just one of many teams to have reached out to Pagán after his fine season, which included a 2.99 ERA in 69 1/3 innings. Still, they seem like a particularly bad fit for him, given that he’s one of the game’s most notorious flyball pitchers and they play in the league’s most homer-happy ballpark. • Tigers still looking to add pitching after Maeda
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris told reporters on Tuesday that he’s still looking to add starting pitching — even after their addition of Kenta Maeda.

Advice: That means that the Maeda addition shouldn’t dampen the Tigers’ interest in Seth Lugo. The 34-year-old hurler was terrific in 2023 — posting a 3.57 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 140/36 K/BB ratio over 146 1/3 innings in 26 starts with the Padres. If they’re able to land Lugo as well, it would really help to solidify a starting rotation for a Tigers’ team that could compete in the American League Central if things break right in 2024.
