    • MRI negative, iffy for Sunday
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday that Wheeler (back) isn't certain to make his next start Sunday against the Athletics, though an MRI on the right-hander's back revealed no structural damage, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. "We're going to be very cautious with him... We'll know [Thursday]," Thomson said, when asked about Wheeler's status for Sunday.

Advice: Wheeler was pulled after five innings in his start during Tuesday's 10-1 win over the Dodgers due to left lower-back tightness. Though Thomson admitted that Wheeler is still feeling sore, the 34-year-old looks to have avoided a significant injury. Even so, with the All-Star break looming, the Phillies could have Wheeler skip his next turn so that he can benefit from some extended time to heal up from the back issue. The team should provide more clarity on its plans for Wheeler after reassessing his condition Thursday. Rotowire.com Today, 1:35 pm

    • MRI exam comes back clean for Zack Wheeler (back)
Zack Wheeler underwent an MRI exam on his injured back on Wednesday that came back clean for any structural damage.

Advice: Phillies’ skipper Rob Thomson said Wednesday that it’s too early to tell whether or not Wheeler will be able to make his scheduled start in the club’s first-half finale against the Athletics on Sunday. They’ll have a better idea on his status on Thursday. Expect the team to take every possible precaution here as they approach the All-Star break. Rotoworld Today, 1:34 pm

    • Salvador Perez goes 2-for-4, homers in victory
Salvador Perez contributed a solo homer and an RBI single as the Royals bested the Cardinals 6-4 in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Advice: Perez’s 15th homer broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth, and he later added an insurance run in the eighth. Perez caught and Freddy Fermin DH’d in the first game today, so one imagines they’ll switch roles in the nightcap. Rotoworld Today, 1:33 pm

    • Swipes another base
Ohtani went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base Tuesday in a loss to the Phillies.

Advice: The Dodgers were routed in the matchup, so Ohtani got a few innings off after he was pinch-hit for in the seventh inning. Nonetheless, the slugger reached base twice and extended to three a streak of games with at least one steal. Ohtani is putting together an MVP-caliber campaign in his first year with the Dodgers -- he ranks first in the NL in homers (28) and runs (72), and is tied for third in RBI (65) and thefts (21). He also leads the National League and ranks second in MLB with a 1.037 OPS. Rotowire.com Today, 9:35 am

    • Completes clean inning
Bednar (oblique) didn't allow a baserunner and struck out one in a scoreless inning of work in a rehab appearance Tuesday with Double-A Altoona.

Advice: Bednar was originally scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Indianapolis, but weather concerns shifted his appearance to Altoona. Regardless, it was a positive outing and he is presumably nearing a return to the big-league mound. Rotowire.com Today, 9:06 am

    • Iván Herrera (back) homers in Triple-A game
Iván Herrera homered and walked in his fourth rehab game for Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

Advice: Herrera, out since June 19 with back tightness, is 3-for-10 with two homers and four walks on his rehab assignment. The Cardinals love Pedro Pagés defense behind the plate, so it’s unclear if Herrera is going to have a role with the team once he’s activated. It’d be a shame if not, since he’s probably one of the club’s five-or six-best hitters. Rotoworld Today, 8:28 am

    • Strong start in return from injury
Snell (groin) didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. He tossed five scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing one hit and three walks.

Advice: Making his return from a stint on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain, Snell carried a 9.51 ERA through his first six starts of the season but finally showcased a glimpse of the form he displayed throughout last year's Cy Young-winning campaign with the Padres. Snell was on a limited pitch count after making his first start in over a month, but he still managed to cover a season-high five innings on an efficient 73 pitches. His fastball topped out at 97.7 miles per hour, which was also a season high. Snell will look to push forward with one more solid start before the All-Star break; he's tentatively set to pitch over the weekend against the Twins. Rotowire.com Today, 7:19 am
    • Delivers winning run
Garcia went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Angels.

Advice: Garcia, who received a mental day off Sunday, delivered the winning hit Tuesday with his eighth-inning blast. The outfielder has gone 4-for-27 (.148) to open July, but three of those hits have gone for extra bases. He's now at a .215/.279/.417 slash line with 17 homers, 45 RBI, 47 runs scored and seven stolen bases across 87 contests this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:39 pm

    • Blake Snell goes five scoreless in return from IL
Blake Snell shut out the Blue Jays for five innings as the Giants prevailed 4-3 in his return from the injured list.

Advice: Snell came into this one with a 9.51 ERA and a .308 average against in six starts for the Giants, but he allowed just one hit tonight. He struck out three and walked three while throwing 73 pitches to 18 batters, as the Giants decided to get him out of there before anyone could see him for a third time. The 1-0 lead the Giants had when Snell was pulled briefly turned into a 3-1 deficit in the seventh, so he remained 0-3 for the season. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:36 pm
