  • Paddack allows 12 hits, five earned runs vs. Yanks
    Chris Paddack allowed 12 hits and five earned runs over five innings in Tuesday’s loss to the Yankees.

    Advice: Paddack struggled in the second inning of this one, allowing four hits and two runs before retiring Juan Soto and Aaron Judge to end the inning. He’d give up a solo homer to Giancarlo Stanton in the third inning and was pulled after the fifth inning and 95 pitches.   • Nick Pivetta bounces back with solid effort vs TB
    Nick Pivetta allowed two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Rays.

    Advice: Pivetta struck out eight on the day while walking none, but he was doomed by two solo home runs. The right-hander got back on track after his rough return from the IL, posting a 29 percent whiff rate and 40 percent CSW. His sweeper was particularly dominant, getting five whiffs on eight swings and posting a 47 percent CSW. Pivetta also threw his curveball 1.3 mph harder than usual and found some success with it, so that’s something to watch for future starts.   • Megill picks up fifth save of the season vs. PIT
    Trevor Megill allowed one earned run over one inning while earning the save on Tuesday against the Pirates.

    Advice: A Connor Joe home run in the ninth was the lone earned run Megill would give up in this one. The fourth-year vet also struck out two batters in this one and now has five saves on the season. The home run to Joe was the first homer Megill has allowed on the season, and he’s given up just two earned runs over 10 2/3 innings pitched.     Hendriks (elbow) extended his throwing program out to 120 feet Monday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

  • A.J. Puk earns save in win over Tigers
    A.J. Puk pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn his first save of the year in a 1-0 win over the Tigers.

    Advice: He’s back! After Puk was a disaster as a starting pitcher to begin the year, the Marlins transitioned him back to the bullpen while he was on a rehab assignment and then immediately thrust him into high-leverage outings. Tanner Scott did pitch the ninth in a tie game on Tuesday, but he also allowed one hit and walked one which has been par for the course for him this year. For his part, Puk allowed three soft fly outs to strand the extra runner in the bottom of the tenth inning and secure the save.     Advice: The umpires confiscated Blanco's glove for further examination from Major League Baseball, and the 30-year-old righty will be hit with an automatic 10-game suspension if it's determined he used an illegal substance while on the mound. Blanco has emerged as a crucial part of Houston's rotation this year, carrying a 2.23 ERA and 1.02 WHIP alongside a 41:20 K:BB across 44.1 innings through his first seven starts. The 28-year-old righty was unable to make it work as a traditional starter at the outset of the year, but he’s been really effective in shorter stints out of the bullpen in recent years.
