    • Nico Hoerner out of lineup due to hand injury
      Cubs manager Craig Counsell now says X-rays last night on Nico Hoerner’s hand came back “somewhat inconclusive,” and the second baseman is not playing in Friday’s game.

      Advice: It was originally reported that the X-rays came back negative after Hoerner was hit on the right hand by a pitch. Hoerner, though, had some trouble gripping the bat and swinging today.       Hoerner is not in Friday's lineup in Cincinnati after being hit on the hand by a pitch in Thursday's win over the White Sox, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

      Advice: Hoerner was struck by a pitch in the fourth inning Thursday but stayed in and finished that game. He underwent a precautionary X-ray afterward, which evidently came back clean.     • Undergoes ACL surgery
      Acuna underwent surgery Wednesday to repair the torn ACL in his left knee, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

      Advice: The reigning NL MVP had already been ruled out for the season, but Acuna will now be able to begin rehabbing from the injury he suffered May 26. The 26-year-old underwent ACL surgery on his right knee in 2021, so he's familiar with the process. Acuna's injury that year happened in mid-July, not late May, and the difference could allow him to be ready for Opening Day in 2025. Rotowire.com Today, 6:22 am

    • Has positive follow-up exam
      Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) had a follow-up exam with Reds doctors Wednesday, and he was cleared to take the next step in his rehab, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: While that would seem to be good news for Encarnacion-Strand, who was diagnosed with a right ulnar styloid fracture May 8, he opted to get a second opinion, putting his rehab on hold for the moment.       Vaughn went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 14-2 loss to the Red Sox.

      Advice: Vaughn has hit safely in his last six games, going 8-for-23 (.348) in that span. He dealt with a sprained left ring finger to begin June, but it hasn't slowed him down since he was cleared to return.       X-rays came back negative on Nico Hoerner’s hand after being hit by a pitch during Thursday’s game against the Reds.

      Advice: Hoerner remained in the contest and appears to have avoided serious injury after being plunked on the hand by a 96.5 mph fastball from Reds starter Hunter Greene during the early stages of the game.     • Evan Phillips allows three runs in non-save spot
      Evan Phillips was charged with three runs in the eighth inning on Thursday in a non-save situation against the Pirates.

      Advice: Phillips got the call for his first appearance in nearly a week with the Dodgers leading by seven runs at the time and wound up surrendering four hits, including a three-run homer to Oneil Cruz. Fortunately, his struggles didn’t end up impacting the final result of the contest, but it certainly doesn’t do fantasy managers any favors in the ratio departments.       Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) has been cleared to resume baseball activities.

      Advice: Encarnacion-Strand has been on the shelf since early May due to a right wrist fracture. The biggest question for fantasy managers moving forward is whether his prodigious over-the-fence power will be adversely impacted. The 24-year-old slugger is going to need several weeks to ramp back up fully prior to returning to Cincinnati, but it’s possible he’s back before next month’s All-Star break.
