  • Yankees option Rob Refsnyder to Triple-A
Yankees optioned INF/OF Rob Refsnyder to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Advice: There have been trade rumors swirling around Refsnyder all spring, but the Yankees have not been able to finalize a deal. The 26-year-old former prospect batted just .250/.328/.309 in 175 plate appearances last season at the major league level and he also struggled at the dish this spring. Today, 6:25 am
  • Twins reassign ByungHo Park to the minors
Twins reassigned 1B/DH ByungHo Park to minor league camp.

Advice: Park did everything in his power to make the Opening Day roster this spring, batting .353 with a 1.159 OPS and six home runs over 51 at-bats in Grapefruit League play. For reasons that aren't quite clear, the Twins will head north without their best DH option. Today, 6:04 am

  • Aguilar's hot streak continues in loss to LAA
Jesus Aguilar mashed his seventh home run of the spring Wednesday in the Brewers’ Cactus League loss to the Angels.

Advice: It was a solo shot off starter Matt Shoemaker. He also singled to begin the fourth inning. Aguilar has put himself on the map by hitting .466 with 17 RBI over 58 Cactus League at-bats. He’ll open the year as the backup first baseman in Milwaukee but could push Eric Thames for at-bats if he continues his torrid hot streak. Yesterday, 4:03 pm
  • Nick Franklin hits three-run homer
Nick Franklin, who didn't play Tuesday because of an illness, hit a three-run homer and walked Wednesday.

Advice: Franklin's strong finish last year and versatility appeared likely to make him a significant part of the Rays' plans for this year, but his stock seems to have faded some, and even with two regulars set to open the year on the DL in Matt Duffy and Colby Rasmus, it's unclear what Franklin's role will be. He has both pop and stolen base ability, giving some upside for fantasy purposes. It doesn't look like he'll be a factor early on, though. Yesterday, 1:55 pm

  • Kenny Vargas (foot) sees minor league work
Kennys Vargas (foot) went 0-for-3 in minor league action on Wednesday.

Advice: After taking his hacks, Vargas indicated that there had been no increase of swelling in his injured left foot and that he felt good. The 26-year-old initially suffered the injury after fouling a ball off his hoof on March 24. His availability for Opening Day has not yet been determined, but that should clarify relatively soon. Yesterday, 1:24 pm
  • ByungHo Park hits sixth homer
ByungHo Park had a two-run homer and an RBI groundout to lead the Twins past the Red Sox 5-3 on Wednesday.

Advice: Park is leaving nothing to chance; he's up to six homers and an 1.159 spring OPS now. The Twins will likely officially re-add him to their 40-man roster tomorrow or Friday. Then it will just be a matter of where he hits in Monday's opener. Yesterday, 1:06 pm

  • Ryan Zimmerman hits second homer
Ryan Zimmerman hit his second spring home run Wednesday off the Cardinals' Michael Wacha.

Advice: After an 0-for-17 start, Zimmerman has gone 16-for-35 with six extra-base hits and a couple of steals since March 15. Adam Lind, meanwhile, has done nothing this spring, so Zimmerman shouldn't have to worry about losing any playing time at the beginning of the year. He'll open the season batting sixth or seventh, depending on how Dusty Baker utilizes Adam Eaton. Yesterday, 12:48 pm
  • Orioles re-sign Johnson to minors deal
Orioles re-signed INF Chris Johnson to a minor league contract.

Advice: Johnson was just released earlier this week, but the expectation was that the Orioles would try to bring him back. The 32-year-old will provide some veteran insurance at Triple-A. It's worth noting that his father, Ron Johnson, is the Norfolk manager. Yesterday, 7:28 am

  • Moreland sidelined with the flu
Mitch Moreland was scratched Wednesday because he's dealing with the flu.

Advice: Moreland won't travel with the team to Washington, D.C. and will head straight to Boston instead. He should have enough time to be ready to go for the season, but the Red Sox are hurting for depth at first base at the moment. Yesterday, 6:56 am
  • Moreland scratched from lineup Wednesday
Mitch Moreland was scratched from Wednesday's Grapefruit League lineup.

Advice: No word on the reason for the change. The Red Sox should provide an update soon. Yesterday, 6:14 am
  • Aguilar officially makes Brewers' roster
Jesus Aguilar has made the Brewers' roster.

Advice: There wasn't any doubt, as Aguilar is out of options and has mashed the ball to the tune of a .463 average, six homers and 16 RBI this spring. The former Indians prospect should see some starts against left-handed pitching and it's not out of the question that he could push Eric Thames for the first base job if Thames gets off to a rough start. Tuesday, 5:13 pm
  • Matt Adams hits three-run homer for Cards
Matt Adams went 3-for-4 and hit a three-run homer Tuesday as the Cardinals and Mets played to a 3-3 tie.

Advice: Even though he's fanned 19 times in 47 at-bats, Adams has hit .340 with five homers this spring. The Cardinals seem to think he'll be usable in left field, but it's hard to imagine him outhitting Randall Grichuk enough to make up for what should be a pretty huge difference defensively. Grichuk projects as the better hitter anyway; he has a .797 to .770 edge when it comes to their career OPSs. Tuesday, 1:38 pm
  • Lucas Duda homers against Cardinals
Lucas Duda homered to account for all three Mets runs Tuesday against the Cardinals.

Advice: Things weren't looking good for Duda when he was dealing with back and hip issues a few weeks ago, but he hasn't had any issues since he resumed playing in games and he's hitting .244 with a .911 OPS in 41 at-bats. His fantasy upside still isn't what it was; not only will he sit against a lot of lefties, but he's probably going to be stuck hitting seventh behind Jay Bruce in the Mets lineup. Those two are going to draw a bunch of a lefty relievers while paired together. Tuesday, 1:30 pm
  • ByungHo Park homers in 1-0 victory
ByungHo Park walked and homered for the only run of the game as the Twins beat the Rays 1-0 on Tuesday.

Advice: Park has won a starting job by hitting .362 with five homers and an 1.149 OPS this spring. What he hasn't done is convince Paul Molitor he deserves to bat in the middle of the order; he hit seventh in this one and might stay there when the games start to count. If he keeps it up, he'll have to get a look in the fourth or fifth spot eventually. Tuesday, 1:20 pm

  • Nationals place Clint Robinson on waivers
Nationals placed 1B Clint Robinson on outright waivers.

Advice: If Robinson goes unclaimed in the next 72 hours, he'll have the option to report to Triple-A Syracuse or be granted his release. Robinson had been competing with Adam Lind for a backup job at first base. Now that Lind is safely on the team, it looks like Washington's final bench spot will go to either Michael Taylor or Wilmer Difo. Tuesday, 12:13 pm
  • Diamondbacks claim Walker off waivers
Diamondbacks claimed 1B/OF Christian Walker off waivers from the Reds.

Advice: The D'Backs cleared a roster spot for Walker by designating reliever Evan Marshall for assignment. Walker has bounced around this spring, beginning camp with Baltimore before making pit stops in Atlanta and Cincinnati. The 26-year-old spent all of last year in Triple-A, hitting .264 with 18 HR and 64 RBI over 131 appearances for Norfolk. Tuesday, 11:15 am
  • Franklin (illness) scratched from lineup
Nick Franklin was scratched from Tuesday's Grapefruit League lineup due to illness.

Advice: Franklin should be fine in the next day or two. The 26-year-old is expected to begin the season in a utility role. Tuesday, 5:48 am

  • Beckham (hip) expects to return Wednesday
Tim Beckham (hip) expects to return to the starting lineup Wednesday.

Advice: Beckham was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to an irritated hip flexor, but he's slated to go through a workout on Tuesday. Barring any setbacks, he should be cleared to return to action. Beckham is expected to begin the year as the Rays' starting shortstop with Matt Duffy (heel) on the mend. Tuesday, 5:32 am

  • Chris Johnson released by Orioles
    Orioles released INF Chris Johnson.

Advice: Johnson smacked three homers with a .802 OPS this spring, but it wasn't enough to crack the Opening Day roster. The 32-year-old is a .252/.288/.348 hitter in the majors since 2014. Monday, 3:12 pm

  • Justin Bour goes 0-for-3 in loss
Justin Bour went 0-for-3 on Monday and is hitting just .200 in 55 at-bats this spring.

Advice: Bour does have an 11/9 K/BB ratio, which is pretty nice, but he's has more GIDPs (five) than extra-base hits (four). The Marlins want Bour playing every day this year and he figures to be solid enough against righties, but he needs to hit quite well to justify getting starts at first base versus lefties. Monday, 2:03 pm
  • Kennys Vargas (foot) takes batting practice
Kennys Vargas (foot) took batting practice Monday.

Advice: Vargas has been out of game action after fouling a ball off his left foot last Friday, but he did some running Sunday and has now resumed hitting. It's possible Vargas will be ready in time for Opening Day, but he seems to have fallen behind ByungHo Park in the battle for designated hitter at-bats. Monday, 1:19 pm
  • Rangers release 1B James Loney
    Rangers released 1B James Loney.

Advice: Loney batted just .174 with a .485 OPS this spring in the Cactus League, failing to earn a spot on the Rangers' bench. The veteran first baseman should be able to find another non-guaranteed minor league deal. Monday, 9:28 am

  • Rays have interest in Rob Refsnyder
According to George A. King III of the New York Post, the Rays have shown interest in Yankees utilityman Rob Refsnyder.

Advice: King notes that the Yankees subbed Refsnyder into their Grapefruit League game against the Rays on Sunday, having him play an inning in left field and four in right field. Refsnyder went 1-for-1 with a double and a walk at the dish. He's fallen down the depth chart in New York after his disappointing showing in 2016, but the 26-year-old posted promising numbers throughout the minor leagues and was once considered a sizable part of the Yankees' future. King reported back in early March that the Yankees were listening to offers on Refsnyder. Monday, 6:53 am
  • Kennys Vargas (foot) will try to run Sunday
Kennys Vargas (foot) will attempt to run Sunday.

Advice: He's had a sore left foot the last couple days after fouling a ball off the area. Between injury and his World Baseball Classic participation, Vargas has received only 15 Grapefruit League at-bats (and gotten just one hit). It's looking like ByungHo Park will probably open the season as the Twins' primary designated hitter. Sunday, 8:35 am
  • Tim Beckham has hip flexor injury
Tim Beckham was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to an irritated hip flexor.

Advice: Beckham suffered the injury on Saturday. That he was originally in the lineup suggests it's a day-to-day thing. If healthy, Beckham is slated to be the Rays' Opening Day shortstop with Matt Duffy (heel) still sidelined. Sunday, 8:10 am
    Player Note
    Tim Beckham TB - 1B,2B,SS
  • Kennys Vargas (foot) to undergo more tests
Kennys Vargas will undergo more testing on his bruised left foot.

Advice: Vargas fouled a ball off his left foot in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. He's been getting around on crutches and still can't put any weight on his foot. "I can’t imagine him being ready here too quickly," said manager Paul Molitor. Vargas' availability for Opening Day looks to be in doubt. Saturday, 3:03 pm
  • Kennys Vargas leaves with left foot contusion
Kennys Vargas was forced to leave Friday's Grapefruit League contest with a left foot contusion.

Advice: The Twins are calling him day-to-day and this isn't expected to put his Opening Day in jeopardy. He fouled a ball off of his foot and was hobbling around afterwards so he was lifted for precautionary reasons. Friday, 6:04 pm
  • Aguilar has four hits against Reds
Jesus Aguilar continued his red-hot spring on Friday by going 4-for-4 with three runs scored against the Reds.

Advice: All four hits were singles. Claimed off waivers from the Indians over the winter, the 26-year-old Aguilar has had a ridiculous spring, hitting .500 (23-for-46) with five home runs and a 1.457 OPS over 19 games. The Brewers signed Eric Thames to be their starting first baseman, but it’s no sure that that his KBO success will translate. Aguilar is poised to win a spot on Milwaukee’s bench, but there could be the opportunity for more. Friday, 5:23 pm
  • Chris Johnson hits two-run homer off Archer
Chris Johnson went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's Grapefruit League showdown with the Rays.

Advice: Johnson bopped a two-run home run off Chris Archer with one out in the fourth inning for his lone hit on the evening. The tater was his second of the spring. The Orioles signed him to a minor league contract in mid-February. He spent the 2016 season with the Marlins, when he saw 243 at-bats. In that space, the 32-year-old first baseman slashed a meager .222/.281/.329 with five homers and 24 RBI. There is no fantasy intrigue here. Wednesday, 5:52 pm

  • Reds opt to ship OF Walker down to minors
Reds optioned 1B/OF Christian Walker to Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: Walker has had himself a busy few weeks of late, as the Orioles designated him for assignment on February 21, after which he was claimed off waivers from the Braves on February 25. Atlanta subsequently designated him for assignment only for the Reds to pick the 25-year-old up off waivers on March 6. Plying his trade for Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles' system last season, he slashed .264/.321/.437 with 18 homers and 64 RBI across 131 games played. Wednesday, 3:04 pm
  • Adams could play some OF on Wednesday
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny hinted that Matt Adams could see his first action in the outfield on Wednesday.

Advice: The slimmed-down Adams has been practicing in the outfield of late in an effort to test his versatility. As of now, he's behind Matt Carpenter on the depth chart at first base. It wouldn't hurt to give him a look. Wednesday, 8:14 am
  • Byungho Park hits fourth home run
ByungHo Park homered, walked and struck out in his three plate appearances Monday against the Rays.

Advice: Park has true-outcomed in 18 of his 39 plate appearances this spring (four homers, five walks, nine strikeouts), but it hasn't stopped him from batting .394. At this point, it'd be really surprising if he's not the Twins' primary DH to begin the season. Mixed leaguers can take a wait-and-see approach, but he's a fine choice in AL-only leagues.
