  • Marlins add Mike Aviles to active roster
Marlins purchased the contract of INF/OF Mike Aviles from Triple-A New Orleans.

  • Marlins place JT Riddle (biceps) on the DL
Marlins placed SS J.T. Riddle on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 22, with biceps tendinitis.

Advice: Riddle has been sidelined for nearly a week with this upper-arm discomfort and the Marlins finally decided to quit playing a man short. The hope is Riddle will be ready for activation when first eligible in early August. Mike Aviles has been promoted from Triple-A New Orleans to give Miami infield depth. Today, 1:41 pm

  • Mets prospect Rosario up 'in a week or so'
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports is hearing that Mets shortstop prospect Amed Rosario "could be up in a week or so."

Advice: The promotion will probably come after the Mets unload some pieces around the July 31 trade deadline. Rosario, 21, is batting .329/.367/.473 with seven home runs, 55 RBI, 17 stolen bases, and 59 runs scored in 88 games this season at Triple-A Las Vegas. He was recently ranked the No. 4 overall prospect in the sport by Baseball America. Today, 1:37 pm

  • Jordy Mercer reaches double digits in HR
Jordy Mercer finished 3-for-5 with a three-run home run in Monday's game in San Francisco.

Advice: Mercer has managed two homers with five RBI in four games on the western road trip so far. The shortstop has reached double digits in homers for the third time in the past four seasons, and he needs just three more to set a new career high. Today, 2:32 am
  • Asdrubal Cabrera picks up three hits
Asdrubal Cabrera collected a pair of singles and a double with a walk and a run scored over four at-bats in Monday's win in San Diego.

Advice: Cabrera has picked up the pace again, posting three multi-hit games over his past six outings to raise his average from .247 to .257 just since July 18. He handled himself with aplomb at the hot corner, as he continues to show his positional versatility, perhaps for prospective buyers at the trade deadline. Today, 2:05 am
  • Sean Rodriguez belts first homer of season
Sean Rodriguez connected for a pinch-hit two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning in Monday's game at Arizona.

Advice: The veteran Rodriguez debuted in mid-July, as he needed time to recover from a severe shoulder injury suffered in a car accident during the offseason. The homer was just his second hit across 15 at-bats, but perhaps it will give the utility man a little confidence going forward. Yesterday, 10:31 pm

  • Bregman goes 3-for-5 with HR in rout
Alex Bregman finished 3-for-5 with a homer and three runs scored Monday against the Phillies.

Advice: Bregman went back-to-back with Brian McCann in the top of the second inning, prior to a two-hour rain delay, and he kept the line moving as the Astros continued to pour it on late-night at Citizens Bank Park. Bregman, 23, is off to a very promising start in the second half and quickly becoming another high-production piece for the lethal Houston offense. Yesterday, 10:00 pm

  • Pat Valaika hits pinch-hit two-run homer
Pat Valaika hit a pinch-hit two-run homer Monday in the Rockies' loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: Valaika went deep off lefty reliever Zach Duke in the top of the eighth inning, providing the Rockies with their only two runs of the night. The 24-year-old utilityman has a .263/.290/.568 batting line with nine homers and 28 RBI in 66 games this season. Yesterday, 8:05 pm
  • O'Malley (shoulder) starts rehab assignment
Shawn O'Malley (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with Double-A Arkansas on Monday.

Advice: He went 0-for-3 while playing seven innings at second base. O'Malley is working his way back from May shoulder surgery. Yesterday, 7:27 pm

  • Amed Rosario (illness) returns to lineup
Mets shortstop prospect Amed Rosario (illness) returned to the lineup at Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.

Advice: Rosario missed nearly a week of action with gastroenteritis. The top prospect could finally debut for the Mets after the trade deadline once the club unloads some veterans, although nothing is guaranteed at this point. Yesterday, 5:28 pm

  • Erick Aybar diagnosed with fractured foot
Erick Aybar could be done for the season after being diagnosed with a fractured left foot.

Advice: The initial diagnosis was a contusion, but further testing revealed the bad news. It's possible Aybar could make it back as soon as mid-September, but his year might be over. Allen Cordoba and Dusty Coleman will handle shortstop for the Padres moving forward. Yesterday, 4:45 pm

  • J.T. Riddle (shoulder) sitting out again

  • Dilson Herrera likely done for season
Delino DeShields, the manager for the Reds' Triple-A affiliate, told Jason Linden of Red Leg Nation that Dilson Herrera (shoulder) is "probably done for the season."

Advice: The Reds have yet to make an official announcement on his status. Acquired from the Mets in the Jay Bruce deal, Herrera has dealt with a shoulder issue dating back to spring training and owns an underwhelming .264/.312/.397 batting line over 68 games in Triple-A this year. • Three hits for Newman
Pirates prospect Kevin Newman went 3-for-5 on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: One of the hits was a double, and Newman also scored two runs. Newman got off to a terrible start, but he's swinging the bat much better lately, and is hitting .316 since his promotion to Triple-A. There's not much power here and he's not going to steal many bases, but because of his ability to make hard contact to all fields and play shortstop, he's fantasy relevant. Yesterday, 10:52 am

  • Amed Rosario (illness) sent to hospital
Mets shortstop prospect Amed Rosario has missed five straight games and was taken to the hospital Saturday in Memphis due to a stomach issue.

Advice: He'll miss at least a sixth straight game Sunday. It sounds like Rosario is probably dealing with food poisoning, so it shouldn't be too much longer before he's ready to play. Obviously, it doesn't help his chances of being promoted in the next few days. Sunday, 11:14 am

  • J.T. Riddle (shoulder) out again Sunday
J.T. Riddle (shoulder) remained out of the Marlins' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He'll miss a fourth straight start with right shoulder tendinitis. Miguel Rojas will handle shortstop. The Marlins are also giving J.T. Realmuto and Marcell Ozuna days off, as they have A.J. Ellis at catcher and Ichiro Suzuki in left field. Sunday, 7:15 am

  • Asdrubal Cabrera making 1st start at 3B
Asdrubal Cabrera is starting at third base Saturday against the Athletics.

Advice: It will be his first career start at third base and only his second MLB appearance at the hot corner after playing part of one game there as a rookie in 2007. The Mets, who have already moved Cabrera once this season (and he wasn't happy about it), are transitioning Cabrera to third with second baseman Neil Walker expected to come back off the disabled list any day now. Surely the Mets are also hoping Cabrera's versatility will make him more appealing to teams at the trade deadline. Saturday, 1:37 pm
  • J.T. Riddle (shoulder) absent again Saturday
J.T. Riddle (shoulder) is out of the Marlins' lineup Saturday against the Reds.

Advice: Riddle is out of the lineup for a third straight day, last appearing as a pinch-hitter in Wednesday's loss to Philadelphia. He's day-to-day with a shoulder injury. Miguel Rojas is filling in at shortstop and batting eighth Saturday against Reds right-hander Robert Stephenson. Saturday, 1:19 pm

  • Padres place Erick Aybar (foot) on 10-day DL
Padres placed INF Erick Aybar on the 10-day disabled list with a left foot contusion.

Advice: Aybar suffered the injury when fouling a ball off of his foot during Friday's game. Allen Cordoba is starting in his place at shortstop on Saturday and could get extended playing time in the next few weeks. Saturday, 12:32 pm

  • Erick Aybar likely heading to disabled list
Padres' manager Andy Green said Saturday that Erick Aybar is likely heading to the disabled list with his foot injury.

  • Giants recall Orlando Calixte from Triple-A
Giants recalled OF/INF Orlando Calixte from Triple-A Sacramento.

Advice: The 25-year-old has struggled in his limited action with the Giants this season, slashing .160/.241/.200 with a 10/3 K/BB ratio in 29 plate appearances. He'll function in a utility role. Saturday, 11:31 am

  • Mercer connects for two-run homer
Jordy Mercer launched a two-run homer Friday versus the Rockies.

Advice: It was his only hit in five at-bats on the day, but at least it was a big one. Mercer has nine home runs through 92 games, just three shy of his career-high from 2013. He already has a career-best .758 OPS. Friday, 9:44 pm
  • Dilson Herrera having shoulder examined
Dilson Herrera will have his nagging right shoulder issue examined next week.

Advice: Herrera has had a shoulder problem dating back to spring training, and more recently the Reds are getting worried that the injury could be serious. It seems to have affected him at the plate, as he's hit a disappointing .264/.312/.397 at Triple-A Louisville. We'll obviously find out more about Herrera's status after he's examined. • Indians showing interest in Asdrubal Cabrera
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Indians have expressed interest in Asdrubal Cabrera.

Advice: It sounds like he could be more of a fallback option if they're not able to work out a trade for a marquee player. Cabrera, of course, began his career with the Indians and would offer them some versatility. The 31-year-old impending free agent has batted .250/.333/.398 with nine homers in 70 games this season. Friday, 6:58 am
  • Asdrubal Cabrera taking balls at third base
Asdrubal Cabrera has been taking ground balls at third base.

Advice: A shortstop by trade, Cabera has been filling in for Neil Walker at second base. With Jose Reyes excelling at shortstop and Walker nearing a return from the disabled list, it looks like Cabrera could be headed to the hot corner. Manager Terry Collins also acknowledged that getting Cabrera reps at third base may make him more appealing to teams at the trade deadline. Cabrera has made one just one appearance at third base since debuting in 2007. Thursday, 5:49 pm
  • Cabrera goes 3-for-5 with two runs scored Wed
Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs in Wednesday's win over the Cardinals.

Advice: He singled three times and reached base another time on a key error by third baseman Jedd Gyorko that led to three unearned runs in the second inning. Cabrera has a .254 batting average with nine longballs and 29 RBI. He has scored 40 runs and stolen three bases. Wednesday, 8:09 pm
  • Bregman goes 2-for-3 in loss to Seattle
Alex Bregman went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored in the Astros' loss to the Mariners on Wednesday.

Advice: Bregman started at third base in this one, with Marwin Gonzalez filling in for Carlos Correa (thumb) at shortstop. Bregman is also expected to get some time at short during Correa's multi-month absence. Wednesday, 2:12 pm

  • Russell goes 4-for-4 in Cubs' win vs. ATL
Addison Russell went 4-for-4 with two RBI in the Cubs' victory over the Braves on Wednesday.

Advice: Russell opened the game's scoring with an RBI double in the top of the second and he plated Javier Baez with a ground-rule double in the seventh. Russell also singled twice in the afternoon win at SunTrust Park -- the Cubs' sixth win in six games since the All-Star break. Wednesday, 1:03 pm

Braves activated INF Sean Rodriguez from the 60-day disabled list.

Advice: Rodriguez has been out all season after injuring his shoulder in an offseason car crash. He was originally expected to miss the entire year, but he managed to make it back just a few days removed from the All-Star break. The 32-year-old should function in a utility role. Jul 17, 12:27 pm

  • Asdrubal Cabrera slugs two-run homer
Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer Sunday in the Mets' blowout loss to the Rockies.

Advice: New York was down 9-1 in the game when Cabrera went deep off Rockies starter Jeff Hoffman in the bottom of the fifth. Cabrera finished the afternoon 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Jul 16, 1:52 pm
  • Russell goes 2-for-4 with a homer, three runs
Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored in a win over the Orioles on Saturday.

Advice: He took a Wade Miley offering over the left field wall in the second inning. It was his ninth longball of the season and provided his 31st RBI. He also homered in Friday's game. His owners would like to see the 23-year-old start paying off on some of his vaunted potential. He seems to be heating up a little after a very slow early portion of the season. His slash line is .234/.305/.411 through 292 plate appearances. Jul 15, 7:40 pm
