    • Eyeing July return
Trout (knee) said Saturday that he's basically pain free and expects to be reinstated from the IL by the end of July, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Trout has yet to start running.

Advice: Manager Ron Washington indicated Saturday that Trout was close to resuming baseball activities and Trout said he'd be back prior to August. The 32-year-old claimed he's pain free outside of occasional soreness in his left knee as he recovers from surgery on a torn meniscus in May. Considering he's missed two months of action, it's likely he'll require a rehab assignment before being cleared. Rotowire.com 29 minutes ago

    • Mike Trout (knee) plans return before end of July
Mike Trout (knee) told reporters on Saturday that he plans to return from the injured list before the end of July.

Advice: The 32-year-old superstar also noted that he’s pretty much pain-free except for some occasional soreness. Trout also admitted that he has yet to start running and there’s currently no timetable for him to do so. Interesting. This is starting to sound like a situation where the Angels are going to provide no updates, then suddenly one day he’ll be activated from the injured list and return to the lineup without anyone being the wiser. • Max Fried limits Pirates to one over six
Max Fried fired six innings while allowing one run with four strikeouts in a no-decision versus the Pirates on Saturday.

Advice: Fried wasn’t as dominant in terms of missing bats as his starting counterpart Paul Skenes was, but he was effective nonetheless. The southpaw hurler did allow six hits and three walks, but he was unscored upon minus a sac fly in the fifth inning from Edward Olivares. Fried now has a 2.91 ERA on the campaign, and he’s scheduled to take on the Phillies and Aaron Nola on Friday. Rotoworld 48 minutes ago

    • Paul Skenes strike out nine against Atlanta
Paul Skenes struck out nine over six innings of one-run baseball but didn’t factor into the decision Saturday against Atlanta.

Advice: Skenes gave up a leadoff homer to Jarred Kelenic in the first, and from that point out he was essentially lights out. The right-hander scattered six total hits in the contests with two walks allowed and 61-of-102 pitches going for strikes. To say that Skenes has lived up to the hype thus far is an understatement, and over his last four starts he’s given up a total of three runs with a 32/4 K/BB over 25 1/3 innings. There’s no reason to take him out of your lineup for Friday’s scheduled start against the Mets. Rotoworld 48 minutes ago
    • Labors in loss
Gray (9-5) took the loss against the Reds on Saturday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

Advice: Gray allowed two runs in the third inning then endured a rough fifth frame, loading the bases and yielding a run on an error by Nolan Arenado. He was pulled after the error at 92 pitches, and each of the three inherited runners came around to score before the end of the frame. Gray generated a solid 14 swinging strikes on 92 pitches but failed to complete five innings for just the second time in 15 starts this season. On the year, the 34-year-old owns a stellar 2.98 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 109:23 K:BB over 87.2 innings and lines up to face the Nationals next week. Rotowire.com 51 minutes ago

    • Tanner Houck struggles in loss to Padres
Tanner Houck gave up eight runs — seven earned — over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres on Saturday.

Advice: Houck has been fantastic for the overwhelming majority of 2024. There wasn’t anything fantastic about this outing, other than he gave reason for San Diego hitters to have some fun. The right-hander gave up nine hits with one walk, and while he was able to at least add four punchouts, they don’t compensate for giving up three homers. Houck hadn’t allowed more than three runs since April 12, so it’s fair to write this one off as a “pobody’s nerfect.” He’s scheduled to face the Yankees on Friday, and he’ll try and lower an ERA that jumped from 2.18 to 2.67 after this clunker. • Sonny Gray chased early in loss to Reds
Sonny Gray allowed six runs -- three earned -- with six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Reds on Saturday.

Advice: Gray had worked through two scoreless innings to start the game before the Reds strung together three straight doubled to start the third inning, driving in two runs. A triple, a walk, and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. A fielding error would bring a run in and keep the bases loaded as Gray was relieved at 92 pitches. All inherited runners would come in to score. The 34-year-old right-hander will look to put this one behind him when he takes a 2.98 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and a 109/23 K/BB ratio across 87 2/3 innings into a road start against the Nationals on Friday. • Nears return to baseball activities
Trout (knee) is getting close to returning to baseball activities, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Trout experienced some soreness in his left knee in mid-June but said this week that he's feeling better. Angels manager Ron Washington consequently indicated that the future Hall of Famer is nearing a return to baseball activities, though he didn't specify the nature of those activities or a clear timeframe. Trout has been working out on a stationary bike and elliptical, though he remains several weeks away from being ready to be activated from the injured list. Rotowire.com Today, 12:41 pm

    • Gets aboard four times in win
Gelof went 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk, one RBI, one stolen base and two runs scored in Friday's 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Gelof had gone 2-for-17 over his previous five contests before his big game Friday. The second baseman's triple was his second of the campaign and his first extra-base hit since June 20. He's at a .205/.259/.362 slash line with eight home runs, 22 RBI, 25 runs scored and nine steals across 62 games this year. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:05 pm
