      Phillips earned a save against the Rockies on Thursday, striking out two batters in a perfect ninth inning.

      Advice: Phillips cruised to the save on 11 pitches, punching out two of the three batters he faced. It was the fifth straight scoreless and hitless outing for the closer, who has allowed an earned run in only two of his 21 appearances this season.     • Blows save, earns win
      Fairbanks (2-3) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on two hits over two innings against the Twins. He struck out one.

      Advice: Fairbanks was not needed to start the ninth due to the Rays holding a four-run lead, but a leadoff homer followed by the next two runners reaching base necessitated the call to Fairbanks. After inducing a couple of quick outs, Jose Miranda tagged him for a two-out game-tying homer that sent the game to extras. Once the Rays regained the lead in the 10th, Fairbanks stayed on to close out his own victory. The blown save was the second of the season for Fairbanks, who ran the gamut during the series with the Twins, suffering the loss on Tuesday followed by the blown save and subsequent win on Thursday.     • Phillips picks up 12th save Thurday
      Evan Phillips tossed a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the save against the Rockies on Thursday.

      Advice: Phillips’ save was his 12th of the year. He struck out two Rockies in the scoreless frame. Phillips hasn’t blown a save opportunity yet this year and his ERA is down to 1.80. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:26 pm
       
    • Pete Fairbanks (thumb) blows save, gets victory
      Pete Fairbanks (thumb) blew a save while allowing a run against the Twins on Thursday, but worked two innings to get the victory.

      Advice: Fairbanks entered the game with a couple of runners on and Tampa Bay holding a 6-3 cushion. He was able to get the first two outs, but then gave up a game-tying homer to Jose Miranda to blow the save. He was able to get the final three outs after the Rays scored in the 10th, however, so he gets the win. The right-hander missed a couple of days while dealing with a thumb injury, so the positive is he was back on the mound and does at least get a win.       Nolan Arenado (elbow) is not in the lineup for Thursday’s showdown against the Giants.



      Advice: As expected, Arenado is sitting out Thursday’s series opener against the Giants after X-rays came back negative on is left elbow after being hit by a pitch during Wednesday’s game against the Marlins. He had previously said he hoped to return by Saturday, so the Cardinals will continue to give him a couple of days off. Brandon Crawford will start at third base on Thursday and bat seventh.       Arenado (elbow) isn't in the starting lineup Thursday against the Giants, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

      Advice: Arenado said Wednesday that he's aiming to return to the Cardinals' lineup Saturday, so his absence from Thursday's starting nine hardly comes as a surprise.       Volpe went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs Wednesday in an extra-inning loss to Baltimore.

      Advice: Volpe set the table well out of the leadoff spot, reaching base four times and notching his sixth effort of at least three hits this season. The second-year shortstop came up with a clutch hit in the ninth inning, doubling to left field and later coming home to score the game-tying run on a Giancarlo Stanton single.       Alonso went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Wednesday in a loss to the Rangers.

      Advice: Alonso gave New York a two-run lead with his blast to center field in the sixth inning, but Texas was able to mount a comeback and pull off the victory. The long ball continued a hot stretch for the first baseman, as he's in the midst of a five-game hitting streak during which he's batted .391 (9-for-23) with two homers and 10 RBI.     • Brenton Doyle brings home winning run vs. Dodgers
      Brenton Doyle went 0-for-3 with two RBI against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

      Advice: Doyle went hitless on Wednesday, but still had two of the Rockies’ biggest at-bats. He brought in the tying run in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly. With the game still tied in the bottom of the ninth, he brought the winning run in to score with his second sacrifice fly.
