  • Cody Bellinger (knee) runs the bases on Friday
Cody Bellinger (knee) began his running progression on Friday and was seen running the bases prior to Friday's game against the Padres in San Diego.

Advice: It's only a matter of time now before Bellinger is cleared for a minor league rehab assignment -- or a direct return to the Cubs' lineup. He has been sidelined since May 16 due to a left knee contusion, and the Cubs' offense -- and fantasy owners alike -- have certainly missed his production. Prior to landing on the injured list, the 27-year-old was hitting .271/.337/.493 with seven homers, 20 RBI and nine stolen bases in 37 games. NBCSportsEDGE.com 1 minute ago

  • Darin Ruf exits Friday's game with apparent injury
Darin Ruf was pulled from Friday's game against the Reds with an apparent injury.

Advice: Ruf crashed into the tarp while chasing down a foul ball in the third inning and was replaced by Rowdy Tellez. Expect the Brewers to provide an update on his status as soon as one becomes available. NBCSportsEDGE.com 7 minutes ago

  • Padres option José Azocar back to Triple-A Friday
Padres optioned José Azocar to Triple-A El Paso.

Advice: With Manny Machado returning from the injured list on Friday, someone needed to go, and it looks like Azocar drew the short straw this time around. He'll bide his time at Triple-A El Paso until he's called upon again by the Padres. NBCSportsEDGE.com 9 minutes ago

  • Padres promote Alfonso Rivas from Triple-A Friday
Padres selected the contract of 1B Alfonso Rivas from Triple-A El Paso.

Advice: Rivas will provide some thump off of the bench while Nelson Cruz (hamstring) is sidelined. The 26-year-old was slashing a healthy .319/.440/.571 with eight homers and 33 RBI in 44 games at Triple-A El Paso. He is not in the Padres' starting lineup for Friday night's battle against his former team. NBCSportsEDGE.com 10 minutes ago

  • Padres place Nelson Cruz (hamstring) on 10-day IL
Padres placed DH Nelson Cruz on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 1, with a right hamstring strain.

Advice: It's unclear how long Cruz may be sidelined. The 42-year-old slugger hasn't quite provided the punch that the Padres had hoped for this season -- slashing just .238/.270/.381 with three homers and 16 RBI in his 111 plate appearances. Alfonso Rivas had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move on Friday. NBCSportsEDGE.com 12 minutes ago

  • Padres move Luis Campusano to 60-day IL on Friday
Padres transferred C Luis Campusano to the 60-day injured list.

Advice: Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 24-year-old backstop -- he's still expected to be sidelined until after the All-Star break -- this was merely done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the club's 40-man roster. Campusano is working his way back from surgery on his left thumb. NBCSportsEDGE.com 15 minutes ago

  • Marco Gonzales scratched from start on Saturday
Marco Gonzales was scratched from his scheduled start against the Rangers on Saturday and will undergo additional testing on his injured left forearm.

Advice: No word yet on the severity of what Gonzales is dealing with, but it sure sounds like a trip to the injured list is upcoming. Bryan Woo will have his contract selected from Double-A Arkansas to start in his place on Saturday. Expect more information to come out prior to Saturday's contest. • Red Sox place Chris Sale (shoulder) on 15-day IL
Red Sox placed LHP Chris Sale on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation.

Advice: The 34-year-old southpaw was pulled from Thursday's start against the Reds after 3 2/3 innings due to a shoulder issue and was sent for an MRI that evening -- the results of which are not yet known. Sale told reporters on Friday that he doesn't believe that he will require surgery, but that they won't have a full diagnosis for another week or so. It sure sounds like he's going to be sidelined for a while. NBCSportsEDGE.com 25 minutes ago

  • Manny Machado returns to Padres lineup on Friday
Padres activated INF Manny Machado from the 10-day injured list.

Advice: Machado had been sidelined since mid-May due to a small fracture in his left hand. Rather than playing a game or two on a minor league rehab assignment, he'll jump right back into the Padres' lineup on Friday night -- starting at third base and batting fourth against Jameson Taillon and the Cubs.
