      Alex Verdugo went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts as the Yankees’ cleanup hitter Friday against the Red Sox.

      Advice: Verdugo homered in his first game against his former team last month, but that’s the only homer he’s hit in five weeks since May 29. He’s hitting a modest .244/.301/.392 for the season, and he’s fortunate Jasson Dominguez’s oblique injury has left the Yankees with no quality replacements for him in left field.       Evan Phillips struck out the side while picking up a save Friday for the Dodgers in their 8-5 win over the Brewers.

      Advice: Phillips was filthy while picking up the save, needing only 12 pitches to fan the side. He still hasn’t blown a save in 2024, and his 14 stops are more impressive when you consider he missed close to a month with his hamstring strain.       Kimbrel picked up the save in Friday's 3-2 victory over the Athletics. He pitched a clean inning with two strikeouts.

      Advice: The veteran closer extended his scoreless appearances streak to six with this performance, promptly retiring the side on a tidy 10 pitches. Kimbrel stands fourth all-time in career saves with 439, needing 40 more to pass Lee Smith for third.       Craig Kimbrel struck out two while picking up a save Friday against the Athletics.

      Advice: Kimbrel didn’t allow a hit and needed just 10 pitches — seven of them strikes — to get through the Oakland lineup. There have been a few blips for the right-hander, but this was a reminder that there’s been more good than bad in his time as the Baltimore stopper. It's possible he sits out a game or two in order to give his hand a chance to properly recover, but an extended absence isn't likely.       Jose Altuve was removed from Friday night’s battle against the Twins after being hit by a pitch on his left hand.

      Advice: Altuve was clipped by a 94.3 mph sinker from Josh Winder. The 34-year-old superstar second baseman was grimacing and looked to be in obvious pain on the field. He’ll head for X-rays to see if he’s dealing with any fractures. The Astros should have an update on his status after that imaging is complete.
