    • David Bednar strikes out two in scoreless inning
      David Bednar struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning against the Twins on Saturday.

      Advice: The Pirates plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth to go up by four, putting a save situation out of reach for Bednar, who took over to close it out in the top of the ninth. He worked around a base hit, striking out two in a scoreless frame. The 29-year-old right-hander has been excellent after a slow start.     • Bell: CES (wrist) to resume swinging this month
      Reds manager David Bell told reporters Saturday that Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) is expected to start swinging a bat in a few weeks.

      Advice: Bell added that Encarnacion-Strand will ramp-up his strength training next week and should be cleared to begin hitting again at some point in June. The 24-year-old slugger has been out since early May recovering from a right wrist fracture. It’s starting to look like he won’t return until sometime after next month’s All-Star break.       Bednar earned the save in Friday's 3-0 win over the Twins, allowing one hit while logging a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.

      Advice: Bednar worked around a Byron Buxton one-out single to close out Pittsburgh's shutout victory, earning his 13th save this season. Bednar extended his scoreless streak to nine innings -- he's allowed just five hits and one walk in that span.     • Takes hard-luck loss
      Ryan (4-5) was stuck with the loss Friday against the Pirates, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out eight.

      Advice: Ryan was excellent Friday, but the Twins couldn't muster any offense against Mitch Keller in an eventual 3-0 defeat. Despite the loss, it was a strong bounce-back effort from Ryan after he allowed five runs in five innings in a loss to Houston in his last outing. The right-hander sports a 3.30 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP and 85:13 K:BB across 79 innings. Ryan's currently in line for a home matchup with the Rockies in his next start.       Melendez went 1-for-3 with a homer, a walk and four RBI in Friday's win against the Mariners.

      Advice: Melendez blasted a 406-foot, three-run homer off Bryce Miller in the fourth inning before adding another RBI via a groundout in the sixth. This marks the 25-year-old's second four-RBI game of the season, with the first coming April 19.     • Clubs homer in loss
      Pillar went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Astros.

      Advice: Pillar had gone 1-for-10 over his first four games in June before this multi-hit effort. His second-inning homer was all the Angels could put up against Framber Valdez, who pitched a complete game. Pillar is up to seven homers, 26 RBI, 17 runs scored and a .324/.379/.590 slash line over 117 plate appearances between the Angels and the White Sox this season. Despite his strong numbers recently, he's been on the bench for two of the last five games, which suggests Pillar doesn't have a full-time role against right-handed pitchers.       MJ Melendez hit a two-run homer and drove home four runs in a victory over the Mariners on Friday.

      Advice: Melendez got the Royals back into the game with a three-run blast off Bryce Miller to turn an 8-1 deficit into an 8-4 game. He drove in another run in the sixth on a fielder’s choice. Melendez has been a major disappointment with a slash of .167/.233/.339, but the 25-year-old is far from bereft of offensive talent. Expect better things over the final 90-plus contests.       De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Friday's win over Cleveland.

      Advice: De La Cruz put the Marlins on the board with his solo shot in the third inning and later smacked another extra-base hit. He's gone deep 11 times this season, though just two of those have come in his last 17 contests.       Bryan De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double Friday to lead the Marlins to a 3-2 win over the Guardians.

      Advice: De La Cruz’s hits all left his bat at over 102 mph. He’s batting .252/.306/.427 for the season, which is certainly good enough to keep him in the Marlins lineup but isn’t great for someone who has turned out to be a pretty bad left fielder (he’s currently DHing about two-thirds of the time).
