• Absent from lineup
Schneider is not in the lineup for Thursday's opener against the Rays.

Advice: Schneider had a rough spring and appears poised to play mostly just versus left-handers initially. The Blue Jays are going with Cavan Biggio at second base Thursday. Rotowire.com 3 minutes ago
  • Handling second base in opener
Biggio is starting at second base and batting ninth in Thursday's opener in Tampa Bay.

Advice: Biggio is likely to see the bulk of the at-bats at the keystone against right-handers, much to the chagrin of Davis Schneider's fantasy managers. He will also be an option at third base some days. Rotowire.com 4 minutes ago

  • On bench for season opener
Fletcher is out of the lineup for Thursday's season opener versus the Tigers.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Fletcher should be in good position to play regularly in the corner outfield against right-handed pitching this season, but he finds himself on the bench for the opener with southpaw Tarik Skubal taking the hill for Detroit. The righty-hitting Kevin Pillar will step in for Fletcher in right field. Rotowire.com 5 minutes ago

  • Placed on injured list
The Marlins placed Simpson (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 25.

Advice: Simpson seemed likely to begin the season with a middle-relief role in the bullpen for Miami, but he dealt with left elbow discomfort during spring training and will open on the injured list. It's unclear when the left-hander may be able to join the active roster. Rotowire.com 6 minutes ago

  • Opening Day nod at third base
Kiner-Falefa is starting at third base and batting eighth in Thursday's opener against the Rays.

Advice: Blue Jays manager John Schneider never named his starters at third base or second base, but he's been telegraphing that it would be Kiner-Falefa and Cavan Biggio at those spots versus righties and, sure enough, that's how things are set up on Opening Day. Kiner-Falefa has a slick glove but has never posted even a .700 OPS in any of his six major-league seasons, so he's certainly an atypical starting third baseman. Rotowire.com 6 minutes ago
  • Hits IL with groin strain
The Tigers placed Gipson-Long (groin) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Advice: Gipson-Long didn't pitch during the Grapefruit League while battling a left groin strain, so his move to the IL to begin the regular season was fully expected. After an eye-opening finish to the 2023 campaign over his first four big-league starts with the Tigers, Gipson-Long had been expected to compete for a rotation this spring, if the groin injury hadn't cropped up. Because of the missed time in addition to the Tigers' other rotation options being in generally good health, Gipson-Long could be optioned to Triple-A Toledo once he completes a minor-league rehab assignment. Per MLB.com, Gipson-Long has resumed facing hitters in live batting practice as of last week, so he shouldn't be far away from reporting to an affiliate for game action. Rotowire.com 9 minutes ago
  • Cast off 40-man roster
The Tigers designated Diaz for assignment Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Advice: Diaz turned in some excellent ratios (0.64 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 16:5 K:BB) over a small sample of 14 innings with the Tigers in 2023, but he wasn't able to maintain anywhere close to that level of success in the spring. He finished Grapefruit League play with a 5:40 ERA and 10:5 K:BB in 8.1 innings, and those results weren't good enough for Diaz to secure a spot in what shapes up a stronger Detroit bullpen in 2024. • On bench after late arrival
Berti is not in the lineup for Thursday's opener in Houston, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The new acquisition's plane didn't arrive in Houston until 2 AM, so Yankees manager Aaron Boone elected to start Oswaldo Cabrera over Berti at third base. Both players should see at-bats at the hot corner until DJ LeMahieu (foot) is ready. Rotowire.com 16 minutes ago

  • At third base for opener
Cabrera is starting at third base and batting ninth for Thursday's opener in Houston.

Advice: New acquisition Jon Berti was a late arrival in Houston, which is why Cabrera is getting the nod at the hot corner in place of the injured DJ LeMahieu (foot). It could ultimately be something of a timeshare at third base between the two until LeMahieu is ready. Rotowire.com 18 minutes ago
