  • Tyler Alexander will be bulk reliever on Friday
    Tyler Alexander will serve as a bulk reliever on Friday against the Royals.

    Advice: Shawn Armstrong will start the game but then Alexander will take over for bulk work. It’s not a bad change for Alexander since coming in as the bulk reliever doesn’t require him to pitch five innings in order to qualify for the win. It’s a role we saw Ryan Yarbrough thrive in with the Rays in the past and makes Alexander an intriguing streamer in deeper formats. Rotoworld Today, 12:25 pm
     
  • Luis Gil holds M’s to one hit, strikes out eight
    Luis Gil held Seattle to one hit with eight strikeouts over 6 1/3 shutout innings Thursday while picking up a win.

    Advice: Another masterful outing for Gil, one that might quiet the “move to the bullpen” talk when Gerrit Cole returns to the rotation. Gil did walk two, but he was mostly dominant with the only hit being a J.P. Crawford single in the fourth. Gil has struck out 22 batters over his last two starts in 12 1/3 innings, and his ERA is a sparkling 2.11. A chance to impress again is scheduled for Wednesday against the Angels in Los Angeles.   • Luis Castillo allows two over five in defeat
    Luis Castillo went five innings while surrendering two runs in a loss to the Yankees on Thursday.

    Advice: Castillo allowed seven hits with three walks, and he struck out three. There was significant traffic throughout the outing, but the right-hander’s only runs allowed came on solo homers by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. This makes back-to-back starts where Castillo hasn’t had his best stuff, but he was able to battle to hold powerful lineups in the Yankees and Orioles in check.   • Rays activate Shane Baz, option him to Triple-A
    Rays activated RHP Shane Baz from the 15-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Durham.

    Advice: Baz was strong in his last outing and had gotten up to 76 pitches. However, his command still needs to be refined as he works back from Tommy John surgery. Baz is likely to make a few starts in the minors and, provided they go well, could join the Rays’ rotation at some point in June. Rotoworld Today, 11:12 am
     
  • Returns to action at Triple-A
    Bido (finger) started Saturday for Triple-A Las Vegas in the club's 11-3 loss to El Paso, covering four innings and striking out three while allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks.

    Advice: After being called up from Las Vegas on May 8, Bido started the second game of the Athletics' doubleheader with the Rangers that day but exited midway through the third inning after developing a blister on his pitching hand. He was returned to Las Vegas two days later, but he didn't start last week while he was given more time to heal up from the finger issue. Ostensibly healthy again, Bido should continue to make regular turns out of the Las Vegas rotation but will be near the top of the list for a call-up if the Athletics should require a spot starter again.   • Rosenthal: Gil could move to pen when Cole returns
    According to Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees “are likely to ‘back off’ on Luis Gil in order to have him as a factor for the playoffs.”

    Advice: On one hand, backing off Gil makes some sense. The 25-year-old has already thrown 49 innings this season and has not thrown more than 96 innings in any season since 2019. However, when Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about his plans for Gil, he mentioned that Gerrit Cole is likely four to six weeks away from returning, which is an eternity during a baseball season. Moving Gil to the bullpen could make sense on the surface, but it’s impossible to tell what position the Yankees rotation will be in by the time Cole comes back.   • Activated, optioned to Triple-A
    The Rays reinstated Baz (elbow) from the injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham.

    Advice: Baz has been on the injured list all season while completing the final stages of recovery from his July 2022 Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old righty started four games at Triple-A during his rehab assignment, posting a 6.00 ERA and 1.92 WHIP while striking out eight batters and walking 11 through 12 innings. He'll remain with Durham despite being fully recovered, though there is still a possibility he contributes to the Rays' pitching staff later this season. Rotowire.com Today, 10:08 am
     
  • Shane Baz continues to improve in rehab starts
    Shane Baz allowed one run on three hits in four innings for Triple-A Durham on Wednesday night.

    Advice: More importantly, Baz was up to 76 pitches and induced 14 whiffs in just four innings on the day. He had a 66 percent strike right but his overall command still needs some work, walking three batters and hitting one. His stuff has graded out above-average but command is often the last thing to come back after Tommy John surgery, so we’ll hope that he can iron that out in his next starts. He may have one more rehab start before being activated off his rehab assignment, but we shouldn’t expect more than five innings in his few first outings. Rotoworld Today, 9:50 am
     
  • Takes first loss Wednesday
    Muller (0-1) took the loss in an extra-innings defeat at the hands of the Rockies on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits over one inning.

    Advice: Muller was entrusted with preserving a 2-2 tie when he entered in the 12th inning, but he faltered almost immediately by giving up a go-ahead two-run home run to Ryan McMahon with inning-opening runner Jake Cave aboard. Oakland would halve its two-run deficit in the home half of the frame but fall short of knotting the score back up, saddling Muller with his first loss. The southpaw sports a respectable 3.94 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, but he's allowed at least one run in nine of his 12 appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 9:42 am
