  • Nestor Cortes struggles in no-decision on Sunday
    Nestor Cortes struggled in a no-decision against the Giants on Sunday afternoon, giving up three runs on seven hits over his 4 1/3 innings of work.

    Advice: On the plus side for fantasy managers, Cortes did manage to record seven punchouts in the ballgame and didn’t walk a batter. Most of the damage done against him came via the long ball, with Heliot Ramos launching a solo homer in the third inning and Casey Schmitt following suit in the fourth. Cortes got 10 swings and misses on 95 pitches in the contest, while posting a CSW of 27 percent. He’ll tote a 3.46 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and a 74/15 K/BB ratio (75 1/3 innings) into Saturday’s showdown against the Dodgers. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:35 pm
     
  • Michael King gets tough luck no decision vs KC
    Michael King allowed one run on four hits in seven innings in a no-decision against the Royals.

    Advice: King was all set to record the win with the Padres up 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. However, with their bullpen being taxed heavily over the last few days, the Padres had to go with Yuki Matsui to close the game, and he allowed three runs while only recording one out. King was only able to induce eight whiffs on 48 swings for a 17 percent whiff rate and 24 percent CSW, but he allowed an average exit velocity on all batted balls of just 84 mph. Despite some poor starts, he has been a solid fantasy starter for much of the year and makes for a fine play against the Diamondbacks next week. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:37 pm
     
  • Cole Ragans pitches well in no decision
    Cole Ragans allowed one run on five hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Padres on Sunday.

    Advice: The left-hander struck out six and walked two on the day while recording 14 whiffs on 46 swings for a 30 percent whiff rate and 27 percent CSW. He had some issues finding the strike zone with his off-speed pitches, but the induced whiffs outside of the zone and the Padres were unable to square him up. He now has a 3.21 ERA on the season and is a must-start every week, including next week against the Mariners. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:34 pm
     
  • Ben Brown struggles in follow-up to no-hit effort
    Ben Brown allowed five runs on six hits in five innings in a loss to the Reds on Sunday.

    Advice: Brown struck out six and walked one, but he was far more hittable in this one than last week. Brown did post a 32 percent whiff rate and 36 percent CSW on the day, but much of that was on the back of his curveball, which is a strong pitch. His four-seam fastball is less impressive, and Brown threw it 70 percent of the time on Sunday, which is part of the downside of Brown as a two-pitch pitcher. Brown has a 3.33 ERA on the season and has clear strikeout upside, but his limited pitch mix will make him a volatile fantasy asset and with Jordan Wicks set to return from the injured list, there’s no telling how many more starts Brown will make after next week’s start in Cincinnati.   • Chris Bassitt strikes out seven in win
    Chris Bassitt struck out seven across five innings in a 5-4 win over the Pirates on Sunday. He allowed three earned runs and walked one while securing the win.

    Advice: Bassitt was able to navigate nine Pirates base runners to keep just enough runs off the board and earn his sixth win of the season. This was his third straight win in as many starts as he’s put a poor April in the rear view mirror and pitched much more like the ultra-steady Bassitt we’ve come to expect.   • Quinn Priester hit hard, loses again
    Quinn Priester allowed four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings on Sunday against the Blue Jays. He struck out three and surrendered eight hits in a loss.

    Advice: Nothing Priester did fooled the Blue Jays in this one as they had 12 hard-hit balls and were on everything. Priester is yet to be effective as a major league pitcher and will need to find some way to complement his fantastic slider in order to do so. The loss was his fifth of the season without a win.   • Brayan Bello falters late in no-decision
    Brayan Bello was charged with four runs in 6 1/3 innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Tigers.

    Advice: This one is on Alex Cora, who sent Bello back out for the seventh to face the top of the lineup for a fourth time even though he had given up runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Bello surrendered hits to two of the three batters he faced before being pulled, and Justin Slaten allowed both runners to score afterwards. Bello remains 6-2 with a 4.36 ERA.   • Casey Mize walks four in four innings
    Casey Mize surrendered three runs — two earned — and walked four in four innings Sunday against the Red Sox.

    Advice: This really should have been worse, but the Red Sox went 0-for-2 stealing bases to help Mize out. It’s the third straight start in which Mize has failed to complete five innings, and his ERA sits at 4.70 after 11 starts. The Tigers aren’t going to remain patient for much longer.   • Nastrini struggles in loss to Brewers
    Nick Nastrini allowed four runs on three hits and three walks in four innings in a loss to the Brewers on Sunday.

    Advice: Nastrini threw first-pitch strikes to just six of the 18 batters he faced and struggled to locate any of his pitches other than the slider. He did get six whiffs on 23 swings on the slider, but that was the only pitch he had working. The rookie now has a 9.74 ERA and remains off the fantasy radar, even next week against the Red Sox.
