  • Brandon Phillips forced out with groin injury
Brandon Phillips left Thursday's game against the Giants with left groin tightness.

Advice: Phillips has been deemed day-to-day. He will be reevaluated on Friday to determine the exact severity of the injury. 19 minutes ago

  • Escobar turns in another multi-hit game
Yunel Escobar went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in a win over the Yankees on Thursday.

Advice: The multi-hit game was the third in his last four contests, with two doubles and a triple in that time. He's also scored five runs in his last five games. In total, Escobar is hitting .276/.328/.409 as the team's primary third baseman. 21 minutes ago
  • Pennington scores three times from 9 spot
Cliff Pennington went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in Thursday's win over the Yankees.

Advice: Pennington got the start at second base and made the most of it, also walking in the game to reach in all four of his plate appearances. Thursday was the first game this year in which he's scored multiple runs in a game. Through 41 games, the 33-year-old is hitting .253/.333/.299 while playing three different infield spots for the Halos. 25 minutes ago

  • Chavez chased after four against Yankees
Jesse Chavez allowed five runs over four innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Yankees.

Advice: Chavez gave up seven hits, including an Aaron Judge three-run homer, and walked two in the start. The Angels actually came back to win the game by a decent margin, but the 33-year-old couldn't stick around long enough to earn his sixth win. He's been up and down, but mostly down, through 16 appearances, including 15 starts, this year, posting a 5.15 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 85 2/3 innings of work, but with the recent release of Doug Fister it at least seems like the Angels don't have many better options to replace Chavez in the rotation. An interleague date with the "crosstown" Dodgers awaits Tuesday. 36 minutes ago
  • Jackson's three RBI propel Indians past O's
Austin Jackson went 3-for-5 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored in the Indians' 6-3 win over the Orioles on Thursday.

Advice: Jackson swatted an RBI triple and scored a run in the second inning, and he tacked on a two-run single with the bases loaded in the third. The 30-year-old has come on strong in recent days, going 8-for-19 with two doubles, a triple and a homer in his last five games. He's still a situational player but he's being used well by the Tribe, hitting .301/.382/.516 in 34 games this year. Today, 9:10 pm
  • Smith hits eighth homer in loss to Indians
Seth Smith hit his eighth home run of the season in Thursday's loss to the Indians.

Advice: It looked like it might be the Orioles' night after Smith led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot off Indians starter Mike Clevinger, but that was the last time the O's would lead in the game. Smith finished 1-for-4 with the homer, his eighth of the season. In his first season in Baltimore, the 34-year-old is hitting a productive .272/.347/.473 while batting primarily leadoff for the Birds. Today, 9:04 pm

  • Chase Headley dealing with back spasms
Chase Headley was unavailable for Thursday's game against the Angels due to back spasms.

Advice: Manager Joe Girardi isn't sure if he'll be able to play Friday against Texas. Ronald Torreyes handled the hot corner in Headley's absence on Thursday night. It's been a rough couple of weeks for the Yankees, who have lost eight of nine while falling into a first-place tie with the Red Sox in the AL East. Losing Headley wouldn't help matters. Today, 8:10 pm

  • Todd Frazier smacks two-run homer vs. Twins
Todd Frazier went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's win over the Twins.

Advice: Frazier followed up a two-run homer by Jose Abreu with a two-run tater of his own against Nik Turley in the first inning of the White Sox's breezy 9-0 win. The veteran slugger is hitting an underwhelming .210/.315/.420 with 12 homers and 35 RBI for the season as a whole. Today, 7:16 pm
    W, 9-0 @Min
  • Montero to start Sunday at San Francisco
Rafael Montero will start Sunday against the Giants.

Advice: He's taking Zack Wheeler's spot in the rotation. Montero has struggled as a starter this year, going 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in his two starts. Even against a struggling Giants team, Montero won't be a recommended streaming option. Today, 5:34 pm
  • Carlos Gomez homers twice in win
Carlos Gomez went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI in leading the Rangers to an 11-4 win over the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Advice: In a tear reminiscent of what J.D. Martinez did earlier this year, Gomez has five homers and 14 RBI in six games since coming off the disabled list. Before getting hurt, he had four homers and 13 RBI in 38 games. The Rangers might want to hit him higher in the order to capitalize on this. He opened the season as a leadoff man, but he's batting sixth right now. Today, 3:03 pm
  • Angels option Mike Morin to AAA level
Angels optioned RHP Mike Morin to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Advice: Morin only made one appearance during his short stay with the Angels and he allowed three runs on five hits over 1 2/3 innings in that outing. Huston Street has been activated from the disabled list in a corresponding 25-man roster move. Today, 12:28 pm

  • Red Sox outright Kyle Kendrick to AAA
Red Sox sent RHP Kyle Kendrick outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: Kendrick is now off Boston's 40-man roster, but he will remain with the organization. The 32-year-old right-hander has a 12.96 ERA in two appearances this season at the major league level. Today, 10:47 am

  • Austin homers for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Yankees prospect Tyler Austin homered on Wednesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Advice: It's the third homer of the season for Austin. Since being activated from the 60-day disabled list, he's hit .305/.378/.552. Keep in mind that at one point this was one of the best bats in the New York system, and it looks like he's as healthy as he's been in quite some time. The Yankees could give him a shot in the next couple of weeks if he keeps swinging the stick like this, and the talent suggests that's possible. Today, 10:26 am

  • Fifth inning dooms Giolito
White Sox prospect Lucas Giolito gave up three runs in five innings on Wednesday for Triple-A Charlotte.

Advice: Giolito was excellent in the first four innings, but struggled in the fifth to make his box score a bit deceiving. He struck out eight, and he allowed just four hits on the afternoon. The stuff has been much better in June, and despite the struggles in his last inning, this was another positive start. Today, 10:02 am

  • A's recall Matt Olson from Nashville
Athletics recalled 1B/OF Matt Olson from Triple-A Nashville.

    L, 12-9 vs Hou
  • Carlos Gomez not in lineup vs. Blue Jays
Carlos Gomez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Just a rest day for Gomez, who has been swinging a hot stick since being activated from the disabled list on June 16. He is 6-for-19 with three homers and nine RBI in his four games since returning to action. Delino DeShields will man center in his place and is hitting ninth. Yesterday, 1:19 pm
  • Todd Frazier out Wednesday night vs. Twins
Todd Frazier is not in the White Sox starting lineup Wednesday against the Twins.

Advice: Matt Davidson will start at third base and bat fifth versus Minnesota right-hander Jose Berrios. Frazier is slashing just .205/.310/.405 this season for Chicago, though he has tallied 11 home runs and 33 RBI in 61 games. Yesterday, 11:49 am

  • Carlos Gomez powers Rangers past Blue Jays
Carlos Gomez smashed a solo homer during a four-run first inning on Tuesday, powering the Rangers to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Blue Jays.

Advice: Gomez has been on a tear since returning from the disabled list on Friday, with nine RBI in his first four games. On the season, he's slashing .255/.337/.472 with seven long balls and 22 RBI. Tuesday, 9:55 pm
  • Angels recall Mike Morin from Salt Lake
Angels recalled RHP Mike Morin from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Advice: Morin will join the Angels' bullpen on Tuesday night with Bud Norris landing on the disabled list. Morin has a 5.59 ERA in 9 2/3 innings this season at the major league level. Tuesday, 12:51 pm

  • Austin Jackson knocks in three runs
Austin Jackson doubled twice, knocked in three runs and walked Monday against the Orioles.

Advice: Another nice game from the player the A's should have signed to be their starting center fielder. Jackson, who is mostly starting against lefties for the Indians, has a .296 average and a .900 OPS in 81 at-bats. Since he has the limited role and he's not a basestealer these days, his AL-only value remains fairly limited. Monday, 8:29 pm
  • Rafael Montero in line for spot start Wed.
Rafael Montero will make a spot start on Wednesday against the Dodgers if he's not needed out of the bullpen before then.

Advice: If Montero is needed in relief Monday or Tuesday, Tyler Pill will start Wednesday. Neither would be desirable streamers. Monday, 4:09 pm
  • Carlos Gomez hits two-run homer in loss
Carlos Gomez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's loss to the Mariners.

Advice: Gomez was just activated off the disabled list on Friday after missing four weeks with a right hamstring strain. He homered twice in this weekend set against the M's, with Sunday's homer a two-run shot coming off Christian Bergman in the second inning. Gomez has gone 4-for-12 with a double, two homers and eight RBI in his first three games since returning to action. Sunday, 4:07 pm
  • Seth Smith homers, scores three times
Seth Smith went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs scored Sunday in the Orioles' 8-5 victory over the visiting Cardinals.

Advice: Smith just missed a handful of games dude to a stiff back, but the 34-year-old outfielder looked plenty loose on Sunday afternoon. He homered off Lance Lynn in the bottom of the first, singled to lead off the bottom of the third, and then doubled in the bottom of the sixth. Smith is now slashing .271/.352/.471 with seven home runs, 15 RBI, and 26 runs scored in 48 games this season. Sunday, 2:09 pm

  • Phillips walks it off for Braves again Sunday
Brandon Phillips hit a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Braves to a 5-4 victory over the Marlins on Sunday.

Advice: Phillips also hit a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday as part of a 3-for-6 night. He finished 1-for-3 with two walks on Sunday afternoon. The veteran second baseman has a surprising .306/.351/.431 batting line in 61 games this season for Atlanta and will probably be a popular name ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Sunday, 1:45 pm

  • Austin Jackson reaches base four times
Austin Jackson went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two walks and two runs scored in Game 2 of a doubleheader in Minnesota on Saturday.

Advice: Jackson has picked up the pace in June, raising his average from .255 to .286. However, Saturday's home run marked his first extra-base hit since June 4, and his first round-tripper dating back to May 29. Sunday, 12:21 am
  • Phillips caps comeback with walk-off single
Brandon Phillips' third hit of the day Saturday was a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning to give the Braves a come-from-behind, 8-7 win over the Marlins.

Advice: Phillips had a double among his three hits and scored two runs on the afternoon, but it was his frozen rope back up the middle against Marlins closer A.J. Ramos that sent the fans home happy. The 35-year-old has had a heck of a few days, recording three games of three or more hits in his last four contests. That hot stretch has Phillips' overall line at .306/.346/.432 with four homers, 22 RBI, 32 runs scored and seven steals in 60 games played. Saturday, 7:58 pm

  • Todd Frazier blasts solo shot in win Saturday
Todd Frazier blasted a solo home run as the White Sox topped the Blue Jays on Saturday.

Advice: Frazier and teammate Matt Davidson went back-to-back off of Marcus Stroman in the second inning, opening the game's scoring. His average continues to be a drain, but overall he's hitting .203/.309/.411 with 11 long balls and 33 RBI. Saturday, 1:03 pm
    W, 9-0 @Min
  • Cliff Pennington swats first homer of season
Cliff Pennington belted a solo home run in three at-bats against the Royals.

Advice: Pennington connected for a solo homer off of good friend Ian Kennedy to provide the only offense for the Halos. There haven't been many highlights for Pennington since May 12, as he entered play with just seven hits (all singles) over the past 43 at-bats, dropping his average from .275 to .222 since May 13. Saturday, 1:07 am
    W, 10-5 @NYY
  • Jesse Chavez on short end of tough loss
Jesse Chavez allowed two earned runs while scattering nine hits over seven innings in a loss Friday against the Royals.

Advice: Chavez posted his first quality start in three June outings, and he didn't allow a walk for the first time in five appearances. However, while there was a lack of run support, he allowed a season-high nine hits to dig his own grave. He'll look to get back into the win column Thursday at N.Y. Yankees. Saturday, 1:03 am
  • Carlos Gomez homers in return
Carlos Gomez had a three-run homer and an RBI single against the Mariners in his return from the disabled list Friday.

Advice: Welcome back, Carlos. Delino DeShields was fine as a part-time center fielder in his absence, but Jared Hoying did little and the Rangers can still play DeShields in left frequently. Friday, 9:50 pm
  • Rangers activate Carlos Gomez from DL
Rangers activated OF Carlos Gomez from the 10-day disabled list.

Advice: Gomez will return to action Friday night against the Mariners after missing a month with a right hamstring strain. The center fielder was batting .246/.331/.423 with four home runs and five stolen bases over his first 38 games this season for the Rangers. Friday, 1:29 pm
  • Seth Smith (back) returns to Orioles' lineup
Seth Smith (back) is starting in right field and batting leadoff for the Orioles on Friday night against the Cardinals.

Advice: Smith had been sidelined since Monday because of a stiff back. The veteran outfielder is slashing .264/.344/.444 with six home runs and 14 RBI in 45 games this season for Baltimore. Friday, 12:48 pm

  • Yunel Escobar notches RBI single in loss
Yunel Escobar went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Thursday's loss to the Royals.

Advice: Escobar came up with an RBI single in the sixth inning to give the Angels their second run of the game. They wouldn't score again in the 7-2 defeat. For the season as a whole, he is now hitting .275/.330/.406 with five homers and 19 RBI in 207 at-bats. A strained hamstring cost him about three weeks of the season. Thursday, 10:29 pm
  • O's Seth Smith (stiff back) may need DL stint
Seth Smith remains out of the Orioles' lineup Thursday because of a stiff back.

Advice: If there's no improvement by the weekend, the O's might put Smith on the 10-day disabled list. The veteran outfielder hasn't played since Monday. "It’s more mid-back than lower back," manager Buck Showalter told reporters Thursday. "He’s had some just general lack of range-of-motion." Thursday, 9:44 am

  • Phillips doubles twice in four-hit showing
Brandon Phillips went 4-for-6 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored in Wednesday's 13-2 win over the Nationals.

Advice: Phillips got this party started for the Braves with an RBI double off Tanner Roark in the first inning. He would later pick up a two-run double in the seventh inning. By that point, the game was a laugher, as the hit made the score 12-2. For the season as a whole, Phillips is hitting .306/.348/.434 with four homers and 21 RBI over the course of 58 games played. In his last three contests, the veteran second baseman has picked up eight hits in 16 at-bats. Wednesday, 5:02 pm

  • Mets bring right-hander Montero back to bigs
Mets recalled RHP Rafael Montero from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Advice: Montero will join the team as bullpen depth with Josh Smoker hitting the disabled list due to a left shoulder strain. In 19 2/3 previous innings at the big league level this season, Montero owned an unsightly 8.24 ERA and 2.54 WHIP. Probably needless to say, he is unlikely to see any high-leverage work with this most recent call-up. Wednesday, 3:59 pm
  • Angels opt to send Mike Morin down to minors
Angels optioned RHP Mike Morin to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Advice: It was just a brief cup of coffee for Morin, who was called up on Tuesday and tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball against the Yankees in the Angels' extra-innings win on that night. He could see additional work down the road this summer, but for the time being, will continue to work on his craft at Triple-A. Wednesday, 3:35 pm

  • Chase Headley ends home run drought
Chase Headley finished 3-for-4 with a double, a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored in Tuesday's game at the Angels.

Advice: The homer was his first since April 19, and it was the first time since October 1, 2016 that he had two or more extra-base hits in a single game. • Carlos Gomez (hamstring) could return by Sat.
Carlos Gomez (hamstring) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Saturday.

Advice: Gomez began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock as a designated hitter over the weekend and will join Double-A Frisco on Wednesday to play the outfield. He'll play five innings on Wednesday, seven on Thursday and nine on Friday before then being activated if all goes well. Gomez has been out since mid-May with a strained right hamstring. • Gomez (hamstring) plays OF in rehab this week
Carlos Gomez (hamstring) will rehab with the Rangers for the next two days before then playing the outfield during his rehab assignment.

Advice: Gomez began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock as a designated hitter over the weekend and is slated to play the outfield later this week. It looks like he's tracking toward a return as soon as late this week or, probably more likely, early next week. Jun 12, 1:16 pm
