    • Resumes throwing program
Garrett (forearm) has began playing catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Garrett will finally resume a throwing program after being placed on the injured list June 23 with a strained left forearm. The 26-year-old was deemed asymptomatic last week but spent several days focusing on strengthening his forearm before starting to throw. Garrett still has several checkpoints to complete before being activated and shouldn't be expected back for several weeks. Rotowire.com 49 minutes ago

    • Tuesday's session on flat ground
Jones' (lat) throwing session Tuesday was from flat ground, not from the mound as previously indicated, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: Destin had reported earlier that Jones was throwing a bullpen session, but he later issued a correction, noting it was a flat-ground throwing session from the Pirates' bullpen. While it means the right-hander isn't quite as far a long as previously indicated, it's still good news that he is doing any kind of throwing for the second day in a row. Jones has been sidelined for most of July with a Grade 2 right lat strain. Rotowire.com Today, 12:06 pm

    • Jared Jones (lat) throws from flat ground
Jared Jones (lat) threw from flat ground before Tuesday’s game against the Cardinals.

Advice: There were initial reports that Jones was throwing a bullpen session from the mound, but Jones instead threw from flat ground just in front of the mound. It’s still a positive sign to see the 22-year-old throw, but maybe not quite as positive as an actual bullpen session. The hope is that Jones can return to the mound for the Pirates in August. • Throws bullpen session
Jones (lat) threw a bullpen session at PNC Park on Tuesday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: Jones did some flat-ground throwing Monday and was then spotted progressing to mound work a day later, which is certainly a good sign as he works his way back from a Grade 2 lat strain. The Pirates will certainly proceed cautiously with the prized youngster, particularly since he was going to have his workload limited somewhat down the stretch, anyway, but this is a big step in his recovery. • River Ryan holds Giants to unearned run in debut
River Ryan delivered in his major league debut Monday, allowing only an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings against the Giants.

Advice: Ryan missed the first two months of the season with a shoulder problem, so tonight was actually the first time all year that he’d pitched into the sixth inning. He needed just 73 pitches to get his 16 outs, even though he did walk three. Manager Dave Roberts indicated after the game that Ryan is tentatively scheduled to remain in the rotation for now, so he’s worth grabbing in leagues in which he’s available. • Blake Snell delivers quality start in no-decision
Blake Snell allowed two runs over six innings Monday in a no-decision against the Dodgers.

Advice: Snell allowed just three hard-hit balls and four hits in another quality start, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Giants tonight. He has a favorable matchup at home against the Rockies next time out. Rotoworld Yesterday, 11:16 pm

    • Submits another quality start
Snell allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Monday.

Advice: Snell's scoreless streak ended when Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, and the Dodgers' outfielder added a second run off the lefty with an RBI single in the sixth. It was still Snell's second quality start in a row, and it's all the more impressive he was able to put in a good effort against a tough opponent. While his ERA is at 5.83 with a 1.37 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB over 41.2 innings, he's trending in the right direction now that he appears to be fully healthy. His next start is expected to come at home versus the Rockies. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:34 pm

    • Fares well in debut
Ryan allowed an unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out two over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday.

Advice: A passed ball led to the only run on Ryan's line, as he made a pretty good first impression in the majors. He threw just 42 of 73 pitches for strikes however, and the three walks were a concern since he's displayed control issues throughout his minor-league career. It's unclear if the rookie right-hander will remain in the rotation, as the Dodgers are getting Tyler Glasnow (back) and Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) back soon. With two off days next week, it's unlikely the team goes with a six-man rotation for an extended period of time, so it may come down to Ryan or Justin Wrobleski for one spot until Walker Buehler (hip) is also ready to rejoin the team. • Marcell Ozuna reaches base three times in loss
Marcell Ozuna went 2-for-3 with a walk on Monday in the Braves’ loss to the Reds.

Advice: Ozuna, who boasts a stellar .980 OPS with 28 homers and 79 RBI this season, supplied two of Atlanta’s three hits combined off Hunter Greene and a pair of Cincinnati relievers as they went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on-base in a near-shutout. Yuck. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:23 pm
