  • Peralta has first poor start of the season
    Freddy Peralta allowed five runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Pirates.

    Advice: It all came down to command for Peralta, who walked five and struck out five on the day. Peralta, who has been electric all season, had just a 40 percent zone rate on the day and an 18 percent chase rate, so he wasn’t able to pound the strike zone and didn’t make the Pirates chase pitches out of the strike zone. His fastball, which had taken a massive step forward in 2024, had just a 40 percent zone rate on its own. Without that, Peralta was never able to get into a rhythm. We’ve seen his fastball command fail him at times, but this is the first time in 2024, so hopefully it’s not the beginning of a poor stretch of command.   • Second straight one-hitter
    Wheeler (2-3) earned the win Thursday against the Reds, allowing one hit and four walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

    Advice: Wheeler's allowed just one hit in consecutive starts, as he's held opponents scoreless in 13.1 consecutive innings, posting 16 strikeouts in that span. The 33-year-old right-hander has arguably been the top fantasy starting option early in the season -- he lowered his ERA to 1.93 with a 0.88 WHIP and 46:11 K:BB through six starts (37.1 innings).   • Goes four-plus in rehab start
    Buehler (elbow) was charged with five runs (three earned) over four-plus innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

    Advice: He permitted seven hits, walked two and struck out five. The line for Buehler wasn't pretty, but keep in mind that the game was pitched at high altitude at Albuquerque, so the results were mostly secondary. Buehler got his pitch count up to 86 and averaged 94.1 mph with his four-seamer, which is down 1.1 mph from what he averaged during the 2022 season prior to Tommy John surgery. It's possible this was Buehler's final rehab start, but that determination hasn't been made yet. He could potentially make his season debut as soon as Monday in Arizona.   • Likely to make another rehab start
    Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that Manoah (shoulder) is likely to make another rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

    Advice: Manoah was roughed up for six runs on seven hits and four walks over three innings in his latest start with Buffalo on Wednesday. Three of his four rehab outings have been poor, and overall batters have hit .406/.474/.703 off Manoah. He does not appear close to being ready to help out the major-league club.   • Next rehab outing set for Tuesday
    Scherzer (back) is scheduled to make his next rehab start Tuesday with Double-A Frisco, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

    Advice: Scherzer will look to push up his pitch count in his second rehab outing after he struck out four over 2.1 innings (52 pitches) while allowing three earned runs on five hits and no walks in his 2024 debut Wednesday with Triple-A Round Rock. Since Scherzer missed all of spring training while completing his recovery from Dec. 15 surgery to address a herniated disc in his back, he could require an additional rehab start after Tuesday to get fully stretched out.   • Starting Sunday in Mexico City
    Astros manager Joe Espada said that Valdez (elbow) will return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game against the Rockies in Mexico City, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

    Advice: Valdez has been on the IL since April 9 due to inflammation in his left elbow. He built up to 40 pitches in his last bullpen session Wednesday, so his first start back from the injured list will likely be an abbreviated one. In any case, his return will still give Houston's rotation a much-needed boost following the recent move of Cristian Javier (neck) to the IL. Valdez surrendered three earned runs and struck out 10 batters over 12.1 innings across his first two starts before getting injured. Given Valdez's expected workload restriction Sunday in addition to the high altitude in Mexico City likely creating a hitter-friendly environment, fantasy managers may want to hold off on immediately activating the southpaw.   • Royals place Alec Marsh (elbow) on 15-day IL
    Royals placed RHP Alec Marsh on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow contusion.

    Advice: Marsh was hit by a line drive off Addison Barger on Wednesday which made him leave the game early. Originally the team called it a forearm injury, but tests revealed that the injury is on his elbow.   • Goes on injured list
    The Royals placed Marsh on the 15-day injured Thursday with a right elbow contusion.

    Advice: Marsh departed early in his start in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Toronto after being struck in the right elbow by a comebacker. X-rays came back negative on Marsh's elbow, and though he sustained nothing more than a bruise, the Royals decided it was best to shut him down for the next 15 days. The Royals called up Will Klein from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday to give the bullpen a fresh arm in the short term, but it's not immediately clear who will replace Marsh in the rotation.   • Will make rehab start
    Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Pivetta (elbow) will make at least one rehab start before rejoining the rotation, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

    Advice: The initial hope was that Pivetta could return from a right elbow flexor strain following a minimum stint on the injured list. That hasn't happened, as he's already missed more than 15 days. However, the right-hander has resumed throwing off a mound and could be sent out on a rehab assignment soon.
