      Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

      Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Verlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,” but the team has said that he’ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely.       Anderson (7-8) yielded six runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Tigers.

      Advice: Anderson gave up one run through three innings before the Tigers plated three runs in the fourth. He was charged with two more when Carson Kelly drilled a three-run homer off Andrew Wantz in the fifth. It was the most runs allowed by Anderson this season and his ERA jumped from 2.63 to 3.03 through 104 frames. He went 2-3 with a 4.15 ERA in six June outings.       Tyler Anderson was lit up for six runs over 4 2/3 innings on Sunday in a loss to the Tigers.

      Advice: Anderson was shelled for seven hits, including a two-run homer by Tigers rookie Justyn-Henry Malloy. He finished with just two strikeouts and only issued one walk. The 34-year-old southpaw has experienced some significant pullback in the run-prevention department over the last few weeks as his ERA has ballooned from 2.47 back on May 29 to a more league-average 3.03 mark by the end of June.       Gausman (6-7) suffered the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on seven hits, five walks and a hit batsman against the Yankees. He struck out seven.

      Advice: Gausman needed 107 pitches to record 13 outs, allowing season highs in runs (seven) and walks (five) while being tagged for three extra-base hits including a first-inning Aaron Judge two-run blast. Gausman did strike out seven batters to represent the fourth time this season he's reached at least seven in an outing, but that's nothing more than a minor silver lining around Sunday's ugly performance. It's the fifth time this season Gausman has allowed at least five runs in a start, and he closes the month of June with a 5.64 ERA over 36.2 innings spanning six starts.       Astros general manager Dana Brown said Sunday that Verlander (neck) resumed playing catch from 60 feet Sunday and "felt good," Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: The 41-year-old's return to throwing is an encouraging development after he was shut down for a bit while recovering from neck soreness. The 34-year-old logged his fourth consecutive quality start and his 14th of the season, tied for first in MLB. Over his past four starts, the right-hander has registered a robust 1.46 ERA along with a 1.01 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB over 24.2 innings.       Seth Lugo threw six shutout innings and got the win in the Royals’ 6-2 victory over the Guardians on Sunday.



      Advice: Lugo gave up four hits, walked one and struck out 10. The win was his 11th of the season. It was another excellent start for Lugo, who lowered his ERA to 2.17 on the season with the effort. The 34-year-old right-hander is set to face the Rockies on the road next weekend.

    • Kevin Gausman loses, struggles again
      Kevin Gausman allowed seven runs in just 4 1/3 innings on Sunday against the Yankees. He walked five and struck out seven in a loss.

      Advice: Gausman just hasn’t been right all year. Aaron Judge crushed a first-inning fastball that wasn’t up-and-in enough and the Yankees kept traffic on the bases seemingly every inning. His tried and true game plan of fastballs and splitters does not have the same potency it used to as his fastball velocity has dipped and hitters don’t chase or whiff on that splitter like they once did.       Lopez (8-6) earned the win over the Mariners on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over six innings while striking out nine.

      Advice: Lopez stumbled a bit over the first three frames, allowing a walk and four hits, including a solo home run off the bat of Mitch Haniger. However, the right-hander recovered nicely after the early hiccups, fanning six of the nine batters he faced over his final three innings of work as Minnesota took a 5-1 lead. Lopez induced 18 swinging strikes on the night and now has 25 strikeouts over his last 14 innings on the mound.
