  • Whit Merrifield misses cycle by a single
Whit Merrifield homered, tripled and doubled against the Tigers on Monday.

Advice: Merrifield had a chance to go for the cycle, but he flied out in his final at-bat in the seventh and the Royals couldn't get back to him in the ninth. That's because Merrifield was hitting seventh, even though he's been one of the Royals' best hitters. After tonight, his .828 OPS is the best on the squad, and he has 135 points of OBP on leadoff man Alcides Escobar (.341 to .206). Yesterday, 9:16 pm
  • Derek Dietrich hits two-run homer
Derek Dietrich hit a two-run homer off the Phillies' Jeremy Hellickson on Monday.

Advice: Because of Martin Prado's injuries, Dietrich has played more than expected this year. However, he's failed to take advantage of the situation, hitting .227/.324/.361 in 119 at-bats. He's a better player than that, but he's still going to head back to the bench if the Marlins can get Prado healthy. Yesterday, 8:54 pm

  • Zobrist (wrist) uncomfortable hitting righty
Ben Zobrist was pinch-hit for in the eighth inning Monday because his ailing left wrist still bothers him when he bats right-handed.

Advice: Zobrist returned to the lineup with the Padres starting righty Jarred Cosart, but his wrist didn't feel up to facing lefty Brad Hand. He's expected to be back in the lineup Tuesday against right-hander Dinelson Lamet, but it sounds like Zobrist might be benched for a bit when the opponent starts a left-hander. Yesterday, 5:24 pm
  • Chris Coghlan scratched with back spasms
Chris Coghlan was scratched from Monday's lineup due to lower back spasms.

Advice: Consider him day-to-day. Ezequiel Carrera took Coghlan's spot in left field. Yesterday, 4:45 pm

  • Brandon Phillips (knee) to return Tuesday
Brandon Phillips (knee) is expected to return to the Braves' lineup Tuesday.

Advice: Phillips is still sore after fouling a ball off his knee Sunday, so he's sitting out Monday. He could pinch-hit, though, and will be used in the designated hitter spot in Anaheim on Tuesday. Yesterday, 4:19 pm
    7:07 pm @LAA

  • Dustin Pedroia (wrist) set to undergo MRI
Dustin Pedroia is headed back to Boston to undergo an MRI on his injured left wrist.

Advice: Pedroia sprained his wrist on a collision at first base Monday and it was still swollen and tender after the game. X-rays were negative, but it's possible he could have some structural damage. The Red Sox are holding off on making a roster move for now until they get MRI results back, but a stint on the disabled list looks like a distinct possibility. Yesterday, 2:48 pm
    5:10 pm @CWS
  • Logan Forsythe hits first Dodgers
Logan Forsythe swatted his first home run as a Dodgers on Monday against the Cardinals.

Advice: Forsythe took Kevin Siegrist deep to lead off the eighth inning, extending the Dodgers' lead. While he's hitting just .238 through his first 20 games with Los Angeles and this was his first homer, Forsythe has been getting on base as expected with a .355 OBP. Yesterday, 2:24 pm
  • Chase Utley homers, singles in victory
Chase Utley singled and swatted a solo homer Monday in St. Louis.

Advice: Utley got the scoring going with a long blast off of Mike Leake that went over the right-center field wall. The veteran second baseman has been playing regularly of late with Justin Turner (hamstring) out and has hit .324 with three homers over his last 11 games. Yesterday, 2:16 pm
  • Schoop had two-run double vs. Yankees
Jonathan Schoop had a two-run double in Monday’s win over the Yankees.

Advice: His third-inning double off Jordan Montgomery was the difference in the ballgame. The runs were unearned due to a fielding error by second baseman Starlin Castro earlier in the frame. Schoop has had a relatively quiet May, but he’s still sporting a career-best .804 OPS with seven home runs and 24 RBI through 47 games. Yesterday, 1:20 pm
  • Phillies activate Howie Kendrick from DL
Phillies activated INF/OF Howie Kendrick from the 10-day disabled list.

  • Pedroia diagnosed with left wrist sprain
Dustin Pedroia was diagnosed with a left wrist sprain.

Advice: Pedroia suffered the injury in a collision at first base in the first inning of Monday's game. The veteran second baseman has a history of playing through injury, but it's unclear how long he'll be sidelined. It's worth noting that he had surgery on the same wrist back in 2014. There should be more clarity on his status after the game. Yesterday, 11:56 am

Daniel Murphy (illness) has returned to the Nationals' lineup Monday against the Giants.

  • Ben Zobrist (wrist) returns to Cubs' lineup
Ben Zobrist (wrist) has returned to the Cubs' lineup Monday against the Padres.

Advice: Zobrist missed back-to-back games over the weekend after tweaking his left wrist during Friday's game, but he's feeling better now. He'll hit leadoff and start in right field while Jason Heyward will play center. Miguel Montero will start behind the plate and catch Kyle Hendricks. Yesterday, 10:34 am
  • Nats activate INF Drew from 10-day DL
Nationals activated INF Stephen Drew from the 10-day disabled list.

Advice: Drew is finally back to full health after suffering a right hamstring strain on April 11. The veteran infielder will return to a utility role. Yesterday, 10:18 am
  • Schoop hits two-run homer, drives in three
Jonathan Schoop went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three total RBI in Sunday's loss to the Astros.

Advice: Schoop launched a two-run homer off Lance McCullers in the first inning and drove in another run in the second. That one came home on an infield single. The home run was his seventh of the season and is he is now up to 22 RBI. In addition, the 25-year-old second baseman owns a .275/.326/.479 triple-slash across 167 at-bats. He has been swinging it well of late, having picked up hits in seven of his last 10 games. Sunday, 2:22 pm
  • Howie Kendrick expected to return on Monday
Howie Kendrick is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday.

Advice: Where, or how much, he'll play upon his return remains up in the air. His injury allowed Aaron Altherr to seize a starting job in the Phillies' outfield and he has turned into perhaps their best hitter. Look for Kendrick to function in some sort of utility role. Sunday, 2:02 pm

Advice: As a team, the Red Sox mustered a total of five hits on the afternoon, with Pedroia responsible for the only multi-hit effort and the lone extra-base hit. The veteran second baseman is now hitting .294/.371/.382 with two homers and 21 RBI on the season. Sunday, 1:53 pm
    5:10 pm @CWS

  • Chase Utley turns back clock on Saturday
Chase Utley went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Saturday's win against the Cubs.

Advice: Utley has pieced together a modest three-game hitting streak and he has driven in at least one run (five total RBI) during the span. The veteran second baseman has driven in 12 runs over his past 15 games to re-emerge as a useful fantasy option in most NL-only leagues and some deeper mixed formats. Saturday, 9:40 pm
  • Update: Ben Zobrist dealing with sore wrist
Updating an earlier report, Ben Zobrist is out with a sore wrist.

Advice: Zobrist said he felt "something" in his first at-bat on Friday night. Rookie Ian Happ is spelling him at second base Saturday against the Dodgers but Zobrist should be available off the bench. Consider him day-to-day. Saturday, 3:09 pm
  • Logan Forsythe sitting Saturday against Cubs
Logan Forsythe is not in the Dodgers' lineup Saturday against the Cubs.

Advice: He's out of the lineup for the second time in three days. Enrique Hernandez will fill in at third base and bat sixth against Cubs right-hander John Lackey. Forsythe has collected just one hit in 12 at-bats since coming off the disabled list earlier this week. Saturday, 1:09 pm
  • Ben Zobrist not in Cubs lineup on Saturday
Ben Zobrist is absent from the Cubs' starting lineup on Saturday.

  • Daniel Murphyvout of lineup due to illness
Daniel Murphy is out of the Nationals' lineup on Saturday due to a stomach illness.

  • Dustin Pedroia returns to Red Sox lineup
Dustin Pedroia (knee) returned to the Red Sox' starting lineup on Saturday.

    5:10 pm @CWS
  • Daniel Murphy remains out of Nationals lineup
Daniel Murphy is once again out of the Nationals' starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Acting manager Chris Speier indicated nothing was wrong physically on Friday, but it's a troubling sign that he's sitting out a second straight game. Wilmer Difo is starting in his place again and batting eighth for the Nationals on Saturday. Saturday, 9:17 am
  • Walker homers twice, knocks in four vs. PIT
Neil Walker teed off on his old team on Friday, going 3-for-5 with two homers, four RBI, and three runs scored in an 8-1 victory over the Pirates.

Advice: Walker clubbed a two-run homer in the third inning and a solo shot in the fifth, giving him his fifth career multi-homer game. He later added an RBI single in the sixth for good measure. The 31-year-old had a very quiet April, but he’s batting .345 (30-for-87) with four home runs and 18 RBI this month. Friday, 7:14 pm
  • Dustin Pedroia (knee) sitting out on Friday
Dustin Pedroia (knee) is not in the Red Sox' lineup Friday.

  • Utley launches first homer of season in win
Chase Utley went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Advice: Utley had not hit a home run entering action on Thursday, but he finally got that monkey off his back when he socked a solo shot off Michael Wacha in the second inning. The veteran second baseman acts as a nice clubhouse presence, but not so much with the bat, as he is slashing a mere .204/.292/.312 on the season. Thursday, 10:23 pm
  • Pedroia leaves game with left knee soreness
Dustin Pedroia left Thursday's game against the Rangers with left knee soreness.

Advice: Josh Rutledge replaced Pedroia at second base to begin the sixth inning. The Red Sox said his removal was "precautionary" while beat writer Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe noted that Pedroia pleaded to stay in the game. He went 0-for-2 with a walk before exiting. This is the same knee that Pedroia injured earlier this year when Manny Machado slid into him at second base. Thursday, 7:21 pm
    5:10 pm @CWS

Howie Kendrick (oblique) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Kendrick received clearance to play in minor league games after taking outdoor batting practice on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. He's been out since April 15, so the Phillies will probably have him stay at Triple-A through the weekend to get properly tuned up. Kendrick was batting .333/.395/.487 over his first 43 plate appearances this season with the Phils. The versatile veteran should get something close to everyday playing time when he returns. • Logan Forsythe atones in 13th inning

Advice: Forsythe was hitless in four at-bats with a walk and four strikeouts before providing the heroics in extras. It was his first game since April 18 due to a fracture in his right big toe. Forsythe will continue to fill in at the hot corner until Justin Turner (hamstring) is ready to return, then he'll move back to his usual spot at second base. Wednesday, 1:04 am
  • Whit Merrifield singles, homers Tuesday
Whit Merrifield singled and hit a solo homer Tuesday versus the Yankees.

Aaron Altherr has run away with the Phillies' starting left field job over the last month. Tuesday, 2:16 pm

Advice: Forsythe will return as the Dodgers' fill-in third baseman on Tuesday night against the Cardinals with Justin Turner nursing a Grade 1 hamstring strain. He'll also bat leadoff. Chris Taylor and Chase Utley will continue to platoon at second base. Forsythe was batting .295/.407/.341 in 54 plate appearances with Los Angeles before landing on the disabled list April 19 with a fracture in his right big toe. He should be activated immediately in fantasy leagues. Tuesday, 2:07 pm

  • Daniel Murphy powers Nationals past Braves
Daniel Murphy blasted his ninth home run of the season on Sunday, powering the Nationals to a 3-2 victory over the Braves in Atlanta.

Advice: Murphy got the scoring started in the ballgame, taking Braves' starter Jaime Garcia deep for a solo shot in the second inning. He also singled in the ballgame, finishing the afternoon 2-for-4. He's enjoying another terrific season offensively, slashing .327/.387/.576 with nine homers and 33 RBI. May 21, 1:36 pm
  • Pedroia goes 2-for-4 with an RBI vs A's
Dustin Pedroia went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Saturday's loss to the Athletics.

Advice: His fifth-inning single drove in Deven Marrero with the team's third run but they would ultimately fall well short in the ballgame. He has a .284 batting average with two home runs, 16 RBI, 13 runs scored and one stolen base. The fact he has more walks than strikeouts has helped boost his .357 on-base percentage. May 20, 5:18 pm

  • Zobrist hitting leadoff for Cubs on Saturday
Ben Zobrist is hitting out of the leadoff spot for the Cubs on Saturday against the Brewers.
