Gorman notes that general manager Ben Cherington has previously said that while the Pirates don't intend to shut Jones or fellow rookie phenom Paul Skenes down at any point this season, both pitchers will have their respective workloads managed to some degree as the campaign unfolds. Jones isn't dealing with any sort of injury, so the Pirates appear to have simply chosen this week as an opportunity to build in more recovery for the right-hander, who has logged 86 innings through his first 15 big-league starts. O'Hearn continues to excel in a strong-side platoon role, posting a .284/.340/.470 slash line with 10 homers, 33 RBI, 28 runs scored and three stolen bases over 235 plate appearances this year, with his success fueled by a career-low 10.2-percent strikeout rate.       Advice: The only hit Cease surrendered during his seven frames was a two-out single by Nick Senzel in the fifth inning. Remarkably, this was the San Diego right-hander's third outing this season during which he gave up exactly one hit in seven frames, and he unsurprisingly has picked up a victory in all three of those starts. Cease had been struggling coming into Wednesday, giving up 11 runs over his previous two starts covering 8.1 innings during his worst two-game stretch of the campaign. He joined Judge, Shohei Ohtani, and Juan Soto as the only players with an OPS over 1.000. He also has 13 stolen bases, 70 runs scored, and 57 RBI while playing elite shortstop defense.
