  • Orioles looking to trade one of their starters
Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports the Orioles are likely to trade one of Ubaldo Jimenez, Yovani Gallardo or Wade Miley.

Advice: Encina's exact words were that a "five-man rotation won't likely include all three." Encina notes that Miley would probably draw the most interest considering that teams put a premium on left-handed starters. However, trading Jimenez, who is due $13.5 million next season, would save Baltimore the most money. Jimenez was nearly sent to the Padres at this year's trade deadline. Expect the Orioles to field offers for all three at the Winter Meetings. Rotoworld.com 19 minutes ago
  • Twins not actively shopping Brian Dozier
Twins GM Thad Levine said unless they are "really inspired," the team will not consider trading Brian Dozier.

Advice: Dozier has understandably been a popular name in trade talks this winter, but the Twins aren't actively shopping him. "We don’t have an immediate replacement," said Levine at an event for season-ticket holders earlier this week. "No one’s replacing his 42 home runs." The power-hitting second baseman still has two years and $15 million remaining on his contract. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:31 pm

  • Texas 'far from optimistic' on Desmond deal
According to TR Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers are "far from optimistic" a deal will get done with free agent Ian Desmond.

Advice: This comes on the heels of a report from MLB Network's Jon Morosi, who said the Rangers' talks with Desmond had "intensified" in recent days. The Rangers are obviously keen on re-signing him, but Desmond won't come cheap after a productive year that included 22 HR, 86 RBI and 21 steals. Desmond turned down the Rangers' one-year qualifying offer, which means Texas will get a compensatory pick if he signs elsewhere. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:44 pm

  • Rangers talks with Ian Desmond intensifying
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Rangers talks with Ian Desmond have intensified in recent days.

Advice: Perhaps as it's looking more and more likely that the Nationals may end up with Andrew McCutchen, the Rangers are moving on to the next best option to fill their hole in center field. Desmond had a resurgent season in Texas in 2016, slashing .285/.335/.446 with 22 homers, 86 RBI and 21 stolen bases. His fantasy value would certainly be helped by staying in Arlington. • Rich Hill could have agreement with Dodgers
According to Peter Gammons, could have an agreement with the Dodgers on a three-year deal worth more than $40 million.

Advice: Gammons cites a club official from a rival team who had been in the market for Hill as well. The Dodgers need all of the help that they can get in their rotation, and bringing back the veteran left-hander would be a great first step toward stabilizing their pitching staff. • Brewers send Steve Geltz outright to Triple-A
Brewers sent RHP Steve Geltz outright to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Advice: The veteran right-hander was claimed off waivers from the Rays last week. This move temporarily removes him from the club's 40-man roster, though he's still expected to secure an invitation to spring training where he will compete for a spot in the team's Opening Day bullpen. • Reds don't tender contract to Ramon Cabrera
    Reds non-tendered C Ramon Cabrera.

Advice: The 27-year-old backstop did a respectable job as Tucker Barnhart's primary backup in 2016, slashing .246/.279/.357 with three homers and 23 RBI in 185 plate appearances. He'll look for another opportunity on the free agent market. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:35 am

  • Reds non-tender Gabby Guerrero on Friday
    Reds non-tendered OF Gabby Guerrero.

Advice: Guerrero, who is the nephew of former MLB star Vladimir Guerrero, was claimed off of waivers from the Diamondbacks last week and now finds himself as a free agent. He struggled with the bat in 2016, slashing .234/.281/.383 across two minor league levels, but possesses enough talent that he should find another club willing to give him a shot. • Reds don't tender contract to Keyvius Sampson
    Reds non-tendered RHP Keyvius Sampson.

Advice: The 25-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment last week, but the Reds were unable to find a trade partner. Sampson appeared in 31 games for the Reds over the past two seasons, compiling a 5.60 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 84/53 K/BB ratio over 91 2/3 innings. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:28 am

  • Cubs do not tender contract to Conor Mullee
    Cubs non-tendered RHP Conor Mullee.

Advice: The 28-year-old right-hander was claimed off of waivers from the Yankees in early November, but is now a free agent. He spent most of the 2016 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre where he registered an outstanding 0.99 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 45/11 K/BB ratio across 36 1/3 innings. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:25 am

  • Angels do not tender contract to Cody Ege
    Angels non-tendered LHP Cody Ege.

Advice: The 25-year-old hurler is now a free agent. He was designated for assignment on Thursday to make room for Brooks Pounders who was acquired from the Royals. Ege did well in his 13 appearances with the Angels, posting a 1.04 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 9/3 K/BB ratio over 8 2/3 innings. He should have no problem finding work in the free agent market. Padres signed INF Dusty Coleman to a minor league contract.

Advice: The 29-year-old spent the 2016 campaign in the Royals' organization where he slashed .244/.302/.418 with six homers and 26 RBI in 63 games primarily at Triple-A Omaha. He'll add organizational infield depth for the Padres. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:01 am

  • M's agree to two-year deal with Rzepczynski
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports that the Mariners have agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract with Mark Rzepczynski.

Advice: The 31-year-old southpaw will get $5.5 million each season. Rzepczynski compiled a 2.64 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 46/29 K/BB ratio over 47 2/3 innings between the Athletics and Nationals in 2016. He'll work as a left-handed specialist in the late innings, helping to get the ball to Mariners' closer Edwin Diaz. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:19 am

  • Rockies do not tender contract to Cardullo
    Rockies non-tendered 1B Stephen Cardullo.

Advice: The 29-year-old makes for an interesting low-cost investment on the free agent market or as a non-roster invitee. He slashed an impressive .308/.367/.522 with 17 homers, 72 RBI and six stolen bases in 452 plate appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2016. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:45 am

  • Pirates non-tender Eric Fryer on Friday
    Pirates non-tendered C Eric Fryer.

Advice: The 31-year-old backstop hit .267/.336/.319 with no homers and 13 RBI in 133 plate appearances between the Cardinals and Pirates in 2016. He will look for another opportunity on the open market but may have to settle for a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:22 am
  • Pirates do not tender contract to Jeff Locke
    Pirates non-tendered LHP Jeff Locke.

  • Ian Desmond a backup CF option for Nationals
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals are considering Adam Eaton, Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gomez and Ian Desmond as backup options for center field.

Advice: Heyman notes that the Nationals "remain focused" on a trade for Andrew McCutchen, but they are preparing backup plans in the event they're not able to work something out for the Pirates outfielder. Desmond is the most interesting name of the aforementioned bunch, of course, given that he's spent most of his career with the Nats. He played shortstop for them, but Washington appears intent on moving Trea Turner in to his natural position of shortstop and adding a center fielder. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:53 am

Angels designated LHP Cody Ege for assignment.

  • Mariners 'on verge' of deal with Rzepczynski
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners are "on the verge" of signing free agent left-hander Marc Rzepczynski.

Advice: Chris Cotillo of SB Nation hears it will be a two-year contract. "Scrabble" issued 29 walks over 47 2/3 innings this summer between the Athletics and Nationals, but he still managed a cool 2.64 ERA. The 31-year-old lefty specialist has held left-handed batters to a .222/.291/.298 slash line for his career. Rosenthal says there are only a few "last-minute details to cover" before the agreement with Seattle is made official. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 9:54 am

  • Pirates DFA left-hander Jeff Locke
Pirates designated LHP Jeff Locke for assignment.

Advice: Pittsburgh didn't want to pay Locke a raise over the $3.025 million he earned in 2016 after watching him post a 5.44 ERA in 127 1/3 innings (19 starts, 11 relief appearances). He would have been entering his second turn through salary arbitration. The 29-year-old left-hander is now a free agent. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 3:34 pm

  • NYY, LAD, TEX, HOU in on Rich Hill
Jim Bowden of ESPN.com reports that the Yankees, Dodgers, Rangers, and Astros are in full pursuit of free agent left-hander Rich Hill.

Advice: Bowden also notes that the Red Sox and Orioles are in the mix, though apparently to a lesser extent. It's no surprise to see this group of contenders vying for the services of arguably the top starting pitcher in a weak class of free agents. There's been speculation about him landing a three-year deal in the range of $45 million, but the competition could at least increase the annual salary. Hill missed a bunch of time this past season due to a lingering blister issue, but he posted a brilliant 2.12 ERA over 20 starts between the Athletics and Dodgers. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 12:41 pm

Brewers claimed RHP Steve Geltz off waivers from the Rays.

Advice: Geltz was designated for assignment by Tampa Bay earlier this month. He posted an underwhelming 5.74 ERA in 26 2/3 innings of relief this past season for the Rays, but his peripheral numbers have always been decent and the 29-year-old right-hander figures to be in the running for an Opening Day bullpen job next spring with the Brewers. • Twins 'have to be wowed' to trade Dozier
Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Twins "continue to aim high" in Brian Dozier trade talks.

Advice: Berardino adds that they've told at least one team that they'd "have to be wowed" in order to deal Dozier. You can't blame the Twins for setting their sights high, of course, given that Dozier is coming off a 42-homer season and is owed just $15 million over the next two seasons.
