• Justin Verlander bests Nationals in 2024 debut
Justin Verlander beat the Nationals in his season debut Friday, pitching six innings of two-run ball in the Astros’ 5-3 victory.

Advice: Verlander topped out at 95.0 mph tonight and got just four missed swings, but he induced plenty of soft contact and the one homer he allowed, a 402-foot shot to center from Riley Adams, would have exited only four ballparks, according to Statcast. We’ll chalk this up as an encouraging first start back. Verlander is hardly a lock to remain healthy going forward, but he ought to be viewed as a top-30 SP now that he’s back. • Josh Hader gets second save for Astros
Josh Hader notched his second save despite allowing a run in the ninth against the Nationals on Friday.

Advice: It was the ninth earned run allowed by Hader in 9 2/3 innings. Last year, he allowed a total of eight earned runs in 56 1/3 innings. He also allowed just eight runs total in 58 2/3 innings in 2021. Obviously, this year isn’t going to compare. Still, there’s no reason to be particularly down on him going forward. • MacKenzie Gore gives up three runs to Astros
MacKenzie Gore was lifted after allowing three runs in four innings Friday against the Astros.

Advice: All of the runs scored in the second, an inning that included three soft hits and a pair of harder doubles. Gore struck out four and walked one. Obviously, it was far from his best outing, but with a little more luck, he might have allowed just one run in the second. The loss leaves him 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA. Rotoworld 13 minutes ago

  • Mauricio Dubón goes 3-for-4 in Astros’ victory
Mauricio Dubón went 3-for-4 with an RBI against the Nationals in Friday’s victory.

Advice: Jake Meyers didn’t really do anything wrong, but it seems Dubón has at least temporarily taken over as the Astros’ primary center fielder by hitting .319/.347/.447 in the early going. Meyers is better enough defensively that he still seems like the superior option from here, but Dubón is a solid enough bet for average and will steal the occasional base if he continues to play. • Riley Adams homers, doubles against Astros
Riley Adams homered and doubled in a losing cause Friday against the Astros.

Advice: Adams is finally getting some extra playing time with Keibert Ruiz on the IL and has hit .306/.316/.583 in 38 plate appearances. He also blew Ruiz away with an .807 OPS while serving as a strict backup last year. The body of work suggests that he deserves some DH time when Ruiz is healthy, but we’ll see if that materializes. Last year, the Nationals used Ruiz as a DH on 16 occasions and put Adams there just once. Rotoworld 13 minutes ago

  • Danny Jansen doubles twice against SD on Friday
    Danny Jansen doubled twice

Advice: The pair of doubles gives the backstop his first extra-base hits of the season. Worth pointing out that would be a little more concerning if Jansen hadn’t have just come off the injured list Monday from a fractured right wrist. It’s nice to see some early success from the 29-year-old. Rotoworld 35 minutes ago

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. homers in loss to Blue Jays
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered and walked in a loss Friday to the Blue Jays.

Advice: Tatis Jr. was responsible for the only run of the game for the Padres with a solo homer off Yariel Rodriguez. It gives Tatis Jr. six homers on the young campaign, but the first since last Friday. Even with a mini-power drought, the 25-year-old has looked outstanding in 2024, and reminded fantasy managers that he’s as talented as any outfielder — or any other hitter regardless of position — in the sport. • Justin Turner homers as Blue Jays top Padres
Justin Turner homered and drove in two runs in a 5-1 victory for the Blue Jays on Friday over the Padres.

Advice: Turner got the scoring started for the Jays with a solo homer off Matt Waldron with two outs in the first. The 39-year-old added another RBI with a single in the second to extend the lead for Toronto to 5-0. Turner has been outstanding in the first three weeks of the season, and the pair of hits and homer has him slashing .345/.429/.569 as evidence. Rotoworld 35 minutes ago

  • Matt Waldron gives up five in loss to Jays
Matt Waldron gave up five runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Friday.

Advice: Waldron walked just one, but he also struck out just two hitters while throwing 58-of-96 pitches for strikes. The right-hander had been very effective in his previous two outings while allowing just two runs — only one earned — over 10 innings, but Toronto was able to get to him for a run in the first and four more in the second. Waldron will try and rebound next week, but it’s worth noting that start comes against the Rockies in Colorado. Rotoworld 35 minutes ago
