• Ohtani says Derby absence a ‘load issue’
Shohei Ohtani said decided to sit out the Home Run Derby as a “load issue,” and that he could participate next year.

Advice: Ohtani has been taking less batting practice than usual this year as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery. Taking a whole bunch of home run cuts tonight probably wasn’t in his best interests. Rotoworld Today, 1:22 pm

  • Pushed off 40-man roster
The Rockies designated Rogers for assignment Monday.

Advice: One day after getting optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, Rogers now finds himself off the Rockies' 40-man roster after Colorado claimed lefty Antoine Kelly off waivers from Texas in a corresponding move. Before his demotion, Rogers had made five appearances at the big-league level this season, giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits and two walks over 9.1 innings. Rogers will likely stick around with the Rockies as bullpen depth at Albuquerque if he clears waivers. Rotowire.com Today, 1:22 pm
  • Scooped up by Colorado
The Rockies claimed Kelly off waivers from the Rangers on Monday.

Advice: Colorado designated left-hander Josh Rogers for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Kelly, a 24-year-old southpaw who offers more long-term upside but has struggled mightily in the minors this season. Between stops with Triple-A Round Rock and Double-A Frisco, Kelly has posted a 9.35 ERA and 24:22 K:BB in 17.1 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 1:20 pm
  • Ketel Marte to lead off for NL All-Star squad
Ketel Marte will lead off for Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo in the NL All-Star lineup.

Advice: It’s a defensible choice, though Shohei Ohtani is right there, and Trea Turner and Christian Walker also might have been better options. Marte will be followed by Ohtani, Turner, Bryce Harper, William Contreras, Yelich, Alex Bohm, Teoscar Hernández and Jurickson Profar. Rotoworld Today, 1:15 pm
  • Aaron Judge to bat cleanup for AL All-Stars
Aaron Judge will bat cleanup for the American League in Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

Advice: It seems Bruce Bochy disagrees with Aaron Boone in using Judge as a No. 2 hitter. He has Judge batting behind Steven Kwan, Gunnar Henderson and Juan Soto on Tuesday, so unless someone gets on base, we’ll miss out on a Paul Skenes-Judge matchup. Rounding out the lineup behind Judge will be Yordan Alvarez, José Ramírez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Adley Rutschman and Marcus Semien. Rotoworld Today, 1:12 pm

  • Corbin Burnes to start All-Star Game
Corbin Burnes will start for the American League in the All-Star Game.

Advice: We’re guessing he’ll just go one, but Burnes was the last pitcher to throw more than one inning in the All-Star Game; he worked the second and third behind Max Scherzer for the NL In 2021, giving up two runs and taking the loss. Paul Skenes was already announced as the NL starter. Rotoworld Today, 1:09 pm

  • Tosses 77 pitches in rehab start
Springs (elbow) covered 4.2 innings in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Durham, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out three batters.

Advice: After turning in a 3.12 ERA and 21:1 K:BB in 17.1 innings over his first six rehab starts with Durham, Springs took a step back Sunday from a performance standpoint. More importantly, however, Springs tossed 77 pitches (51 strikes) in the outing, so he looks to be stretched out enough to rejoin the Tampa Bay rotation. The Rays have yet to offer an official word on the next step for the 31-year-old lefty as he nears the finish line in his recovery from his April 2023 Tommy John surgery, but fantasy managers in deeper leagues should be looking to stash Springs in anticipation of his return from the 60-day injured list shortly after the All-Star break. After moving into a full-time starting role with Tampa Bay beginning in May 2022, Springs delivered a 2.41 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 21.9 K-BB% over 138.1 innings before requiring elbow surgery. • Ketel Marte’s grand slam not enough to beat Jays
Ketel Marte blasted a grand slam homer on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to power the Diamondbacks to victory over the Blue Jays.

Advice: Marte got the Diamondbacks’ offense started with a monstrous 443-foot (109.8 mph EV) grand slam as part of a seven-/run uprising off of Yusei Kikuchi in the fifth inning. He also had a pair of singles in the ballgame, finishing the day 3-for-5. The All-Star second baseman finishes the first half hitting .292/.362/.515 with 19 homers, 57 RBI and six stolen bases.
