• Victor Caratini (hip) starts rehab assignment
Victor Caratini (hip) went 2-for-2 on Wednesday in a minor league rehab game in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.

Advice: Caratini kicked off a minor league rehab assignment earlier this week down in Florida and figures to be ready to return to Houston’s backup catcher role after the All-Star break. The 30-year-old backstop has been out since late June recovering from a left hip flexor strain. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:29 pm

  • White Sox DFA veteran catcher Martín Maldonado
White Sox designated C Martín Maldonado for assignment.

Advice: Maldonado remains one of the better defensive catchers in baseball, despite his advanced age, but that doesn’t really matter for fantasy purposes where he’s been a complete non-factor for years. The 37-year-old backstop figures to have some appeal for a contender as a backup option given his defensive prowess, but he’s not going to have any sort of impact for fantasy managers, regardless of where he winds up next. According to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, it’ll be Chuckie Robinson coming up from Triple-A Charlotte to take his roster spot following the All-Star break. • Dropped from 40-man
The White Sox designated Maldonado for assignment Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic report.

Advice: After slashing .119/.174/.230 across 147 plate appearances during what has been the worst season of his career at the plate, Maldonado has now officially lost his roster spot with the White Sox. Given his poor performance, the 37-year-old backstop will most likely pass through waivers unclaimed, at which point he would have the option to elect free agency. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:43 pm
  • MJ Melendez heads to IL with left ankle sprain
Royals placed OF MJ Melendez on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 15, with a left ankle sprain.

Advice: Melendez suffered the ailment during Sunday’s first-half finale against the Red Sox and is most likely going to wind up missing a couple weeks coming out of the All-Star break. The 25-year-old corner outfielder posted an underwhelming .642 OPs with 11 homers, 29 RBI and two steals in 85 games prior to the Midsummer Classic. Rotoworld Tuesday, 12:31 pm

  • On 10-day IL
The Royals placed Melendez on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

Advice: Melendez suffered a sprained left ankle during Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Red Sox and will miss at least the Royals' first six games coming out of the All-Star break before he's eligible for activation July 26. While Melendez is sidelined, Dairon Blanco and Garrett Hampson should see action in left field. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 12:22 pm

  • Starting rehab assignment
The Astros sent Caratini (hip) to the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment.

Advice: Caratini has been shelved since late June with a left hip flexor strain but has been cleared for rehab games. The veteran catcher shouldn't need an extended rehab assignment before being activated from the 10-day injured list, with a return early on in the second half a likely outcome. • Clubs clutch homer Sunday
Rice went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in a loss to the Orioles on Sunday.

Advice: Rice was hitless through four at-bats but came through when it mattered most, swatting a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Baltimore closer Craig Kimbrel to give New York a 5-3 lead. That result didn't hold, as the Orioles plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to pull out the victory, but Rice's heroics still stand out. While the rookie is batting just .228 on the campaign, he's shown a flair for the big moment, batting .280 with runners in scoring position and already adding a three-homer game to his big-league resume. • Blasts three-run homer
Bart went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Sunday against the White Sox.

Advice: Bart started seven of the last nine games behind the plate for Pittsburgh heading into the All-Star break. He's gone only 4-for-21 in that span, though two have been home runs while also tallying seven RBI and five runs scored. Rotowire.com Monday, 10:12 am

  • Homers in loss
Campusano went 1-for-1 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 6-3 loss to Atlanta.

Advice: Campusano entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh and took A.J. Minter deep for a two-run blast to make it a 5-3 deficit for the Padres. The long ball was his first hit in eight at-bats since being activated from the injured list July 5 and was his sixth homer on the year. Campusano has started just two games since his activation and will need to recapture his form from 2023 if he is to earn a larger role. The 25-year-old backstop is slashing .230/.276/.376 with 19 extra-base hits, 33 RBI, 26 runs and a 14:29 BB:K in 228 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Monday, 7:59 am
