  • Gets save chance in Phillips' stead
    Vesia earned a save against the Marlins on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect ninth inning.

    Advice: When Evan Phillips (hamstring) was placed on the injured list Sunday, there arose uncertainty about whom Dodgers manager Dave Roberts would turn to when the next save chance came up. The answer turned out to be Vesia, who has been arguably the team's best reliever (outside of Phillips) this season with a 1.56 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB over 17.1 innings. The southpaw handled the opportunity well, retiring the side in order on 13 pitches, nine of which were strikes. It's worth noting that the Marlins were due to send up two left-handed hitters among the first three batters in the frame (though both lefties were swapped for a righty pinch hitter), so that may have played into the Roberts' decision to call upon Vesia rather than a righty reliever. It's too early to assume that Vesia will be the primary closer while Phillips remains out, but he certainly appears to be in the mix for save chances along with Daniel Hudson and possibly Blake Treinen.     Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during Monday's 6-1 win over San Francisco.

    Advice: Schwarber belted the long ball in the eighth inning off Tyler Rogers, giving the Phillies an additional run of cushion heading into the ninth. Schwarber also reached base in the fifth inning on a single and was driven in on a Bryce Harper homer. Over his last 10 games, Schwarber is 11-for-42 (.262) with 11 runs scored and nine RBI.     Harper went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run during Monday's 6-1 win over the Giants.

    Advice: Harper tagged Mason Black for a three-run home run in the sixth inning, marking the first baseman's second straight game with a three-run shot.   • Mixed results in season debut
    Buehler allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out four batters over four innings in a no-decision against Miami on Monday.

    Advice: Buehler had a favorable matchup in his first major-league start since mid-June of 2022, as he squared off against the team with the third-worst record in baseball. That didn't seem to matter early, though, as the Marlins jumped on the right-hander for a pair of first-inning runs on a trio of singles. However, Buehler's fastball velocity averaged a solid 96.6 mph in the frame, per Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register, which foreshadowed him settling down to allow just one more run over the remainder of his outing. Not surprisingly, the 29-year-old wasn't pushed too hard in his return to the majors, as he was pulled after 77 pitches and four frames rather than being allowed to complete the fifth and qualify for the win. Assuming Buehler comes out of the start without any setbacks, Monday's outing will likely serve as a foundation on which he can build up to a higher pitch count moving forward.     Seager went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run Monday in a 4-2 victory against Oakland.

    Advice: Texas was down 2-0 heading into the eighth frame before Seager turned the team's fortunes around with a two-out, three-run blast to center field. It was a much-needed big moment for the star shortstop, as he came into the contest batting just .190 in May and .228 overall on the season. After slugging 33 homers and driving in 96 runs last year, Seager has just three homers and 13 RBI through 33 games in 2024. With Steven Kwan (hamstring) landing on the injured list Monday, Freeman should have more job security in center field while Estevan Florial, Ramon Laureano and Will Brennan combine to fill the corner outfield spots.     Teoscar Hernández hit a solo homer while going 2-for-4 in a win over the Marlins on Monday.

    Advice: He also singled. It’s the ninth homer of the season for Hernández, and one of four the Dodgers hit off Marlins starter Roddery Muñoz in Monday’s victory. The outfielder has also driven in 26 runs over 37 games with a decent — if unspectacular — slash of .259/.325/.490. So far, so good in Hernández’s first season as a member of the Dodgers.     Freddie Freeman hit a solo homer in a victory Monday over the Marlins.

    Advice: Freeman went back-to-back with Shohei Ohtani, and his solo blast gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. The 34-year-old hasn’t shown a ton of pop in the early portion of the year, as it’s just the third homer for the veteran first baseman in 2024.     Shohei Ohtani homered while stealing two bases in a 6-3 win over the Marlins on Monday.

    Advice: What is there to say? Ohtani became the first designated hitter for the Dodgers to homer and steal two bases since Eric Young did it back in 1998. End of similarities between Ohtani and Young. The two-way star absolutely blistered a two-run homer in the first for his 11th roundtripper of the year, and he’s already driven in 27 runs.
