  • Freeman's homer not nearly enough in Game 5 loss
Freddie Freeman swatted a two-run homer in a Game 5 loss Thursday to the Dodgers.

Advice: Freeman got the Braves to an excellent start when he clobbered a two-run shot off of Joe Kelly in the first inning to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead. It would be the last runs Atlanta would score, as the Dodgers dominated from that point on. It was the second homer of the series for Freeman, and he'll still have a chance to put the Braves into their first World Series since 1999 on Saturday in Game 6.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 8:42 pm

  • Rockies outright Ruiz to Triple-A Albuquerque
Rockies sent INF Rio Ruiz outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Advice: Ruiz was claimed off waivers from the Orioles over the summer, and he hit just .168 with the Rockies and Baltimore in 2021. He'll likely be non-tendered and seek a new opportunity in 2022.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 2:30 pm

  • Rockies outright INF Fuentes to Triple-A
Rockies sent INF Joshua Fuentes outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Advice: The move clears room on the 40-man roster. Fuentes was awful in 2021 with a .225/.257/.351 slash, and is nothing more than organizational depth. There's a good chance that organization isn't the Rockies in 2022.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 2:27 pm

  • Muncy (elbow) won't comment on cleared activities
Max Muncy confirmed he's no longer wearing a brace on his left elbow.

Advice: While he did confirm he no longer needed a brace -- something that was apparent after he presented lineups in a prior game -- Muncy did not comment on what activities he's been cleared for. The 31-year-old dislocated his left elbow on October 3 in the regular season finale, and if even if the Dodgers win these next three games to advance to the World Series, it seems unlikely he'll be an option for the Fall Classic.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 2:14 pm

  • Pujols starting at 1B, batting sixth in NLCS Gm 5
Albert Pujols is starting at first base and batting sixth in Game 5 of the NLCS on Thursday night against the Braves.

Advice: Pujols, as a right-handed hitter, is the best option at first base for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts with the Braves throwing left-hander Max Fried. The full Game 5 lineup for the defending World Series champions as they attempt to avoid elimination: Mookie Betts RF, Trea Turner 2B, Corey Seager SS, Will Smith C, A.J. • Sox designate Franchy Cordero for assignment
Red Sox designated OF Franchy Cordero for assignment.

Advice: The move clears out a 40-man roster spot for Phillips Valdez, who is off the COVID-19 injured list. Cordero carries a ton of talent and has put up stellar numbers in the upper minor leagues, but he owns a rough .221/.283/.380 career batting line in 451 plate appearances at baseball's highest level. The 27-year-old might do well to land with a rebuilding team that can offer him a regular spot to develop. He was the only major leaguer the Red Sox acquired in the three-team Andrew Benintendi trade. NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 11:23 am

  • Freeman homers, drives in two in Game 4 rout
Freddie Freeman homered, doubled and drove in two runs to help the Braves to a Game 4 victory in the NLCS over the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Advice: Remember when Freeman was struggling? That was short. Freeman blasted a solo shot off Julio Urias in the third, and he doubled in a run in the ninth to extend the Atlanta lead to 6-2. The 32-year-old has Atlanta just a win away from a trip to the Fall Classic.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 8:37 pm

  • Gurriel plates three, Astros crush Red Sox
Yuli Gurriel went 3-for-5 with three RBI on Wednesday in a Game 5 victory over the Red Sox in the ALCS.

Advice: The hits keep coming for Gurriel. He doubled in a run in the sixth to extend the Houston lead to 4-0, and his two-run single in the ninth cemented the blowout by making it 9-1. It's nothing new for Gurriel as he's been an outstanding postseason performer, and with the three-hit night has him slashing .474/.524/.684 in these first five contests of the ALCS.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 5:46 pm

Yasmani Grandal is expected to be ready for spring training after undergoing right knee surgery.

Advice: Grandal made the announcement on his personal Instagram after undergoing a procedure on his right knee. The 32-year-old veteran backstop underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left knee back in July, which kept him sidelined until late August. The on-base machine slashed a robust .240/.420/.520 with 60 runs scored, 23 home runs and 62 RBI across 375 plate appearances this season. NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 4:53 pm

  • Bellinger rescues Dodgers with home run in eighth
Cody Bellinger drilled a game-tying, three-run home run in the eighth inning Tuesday as the Dodgers came back to beat the Braves in Game 3 of the NLCS.

Advice: The Dodgers couldn't get anything going offensively from the second to the seventh inning, putting them on the brink of being behind 0-3 in the series. Then, Bellinger came to the rescue, following a couple singles with a three-run shot off of Braves reliever Luke Jackson. It wasn't even a bad pitch from Jackson, but Bellinger seemed to be looking fastball and tomahawked it into the bleachers to send Dodger Stadium into a frenzy. Mookie Betts then gave the Dodgers the lead for good with an RBI double which scored Chris Taylor. Bellinger had a dreadful regular season but has had a couple huge hits during the playoffs, having also plated the go-ahead run against the Giants in Game 5 of the NLCS. • Freddie Freeman snaps out of funk with three hits
Freddie Freeman singled three times and also drew a walk Tuesday against the Dodgers in NLCS Game 3.

Advice: It wound up being a devastating loss for the Braves, but they did at least have to be encouraged by Freeman's performance. After going 0-for-8 with seven strikeouts in the first two games of the series, Freeman had three opposite-field singles in this one and also added a walk in his final plate appearance. In Game 4 the reigning NL MVP will face Julio Urias, against whom he's homered twice in eight career regular season plate appearances (he did get Freeman to fly out in Game 2). • Luplow undergoes arthroscopic ankle surgery
Jordan Luplow underwent left ankle surgery on Tuesday.

Advice: It was only an arthroscopic procedure and Luplow should be fully recovered by the start of spring training in 2022. Advice: Muncy dislocated his left elbow on a play at first base during the Dodgers' regular season finale on October 3 and said over the weekend that it was still "very painful." • Red Sox rolling with same lineup for ALCS Game 4
Red Sox manager Alex Cora is rolling with the same lineup for ALCS Game 4 against the Astros on Tuesday that he did in Game 3 on Monday.

Advice: Hey, it's working. The Red Sox exploded for 12 runs on Monday, including a grand slam from leadoff man Kyle Schwarber. The full lineup for Boston as they try to go up 3-1 in the series: Schwarber 1B, Enrique Hernández CF, Rafael Devers 3B, Xander Bogaerts SS, Alex Verdugo LF, J.D. • Snitker sticking with same lineup for NLCS Game 3
The struggling Freddie Freeman remains in the No. 2 spot for Game 3 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Advice: Oddly, Freeman is 0-for-8 with seven strikeouts during the NLCS, but he's obviously capable of turning it around at any minute. There was really no doubt that he would be right back in the No. 2 spot. Brian Snitker isn't messing with anything for Game 3. The full lineup for Atlanta: Eddie Rosario LF, Freeman 1B, Ozzie Albies 2B, Austin Riley 3B, Joc Pederson RF, Adam Duvall CF, Travis d’Arnaud C, Dansby Swanson SS, Charlie Morton SP.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Tuesday, 9:59 am

  • Voit (knee) expected to be ready for spring
Luke Voit (knee) is expected to be ready for spring training.

Advice: Voit was shut down in late September after going down with left knee inflammation, but it doesn't sound like another surgery will be required. It was a frustrating season for the 30-year-old, who appeared in just 68 games while batting .239/.328/.437 with 11 home runs in 241 plate appearances. He also missed time with an oblique injury and lost some playing time after Anthony Rizzo's arrival. Rizzo is a free agent this winter, but Voit's future with the team could be in question as the Yankees look to improve their roster.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Tuesday, 9:11 am

  • DJ LeMahieu had core muscle repair surgery
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that DJ LeMahieu underwent core muscle repair surgery.

Advice: The procedure carries an eight-week timetable for recovery, so LeMahieu should be fine for the start of spring training. The 33-year-old disappointed in the first year of his six-year, $90 million contract with the Yankees, batting .268/.349/.362 with 10 homers and 57 RBI over 150 games. The team will have to hope that he sees some improvement with a clean bill of health.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Tuesday, 8:26 am

  • Schwarber hits grand slam as Red Sox crush Astros
Kyle Schwarber hit the Red Sox's third grand slam in two games as Boston routed Houston 12-3 on Monday.

Advice: It was a 2-0 game in the second when Schwarber crushed a 3-0 pitch from Jose Urquidy to break the game open. It made the Red Sox the first team ever to have three grand slams in a single postseason series. Oddly enough, they had a total of three grand slams in 162 regular-season games this year. The Red Sox are up 2-1 in the series with Nick Pivetta starting Game 4 on Tuesday. The Astros, who were forced to use Game 4 probable Jake Odorizzi in Game 2, will go with Zack Greinke. Here is the Atlanta Braves lineup for Game 2 of the NLCS versus the Los Angeles Dodgers: Rosario LF, Freeman 1B, Albies 2B, Riley 3B, Pederson RF, Duvall CF, d'Arnaud C, Swanson SS, Anderson P.

  • Yuli Gurriel goes deep in Game 2 loss to Red Sox
Yuli Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI as the Astros were routed by the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALCS on Saturday.

Advice: The American League Batting Champion poked a two-run single into right field off of Nathan Eovaldi in the fourth inning to trim the Astros deficit to six runs at 9-3. He then smacked a solo homer off of Darwinzon Hernandez in the ninth inning to make it a 9-4 ballgame. • Max Muncy (elbow) left off Dodgers' NLCS roster
Max Muncy (elbow) has been left off the Dodgers' roster for the NLCS against the Braves.

Advice: Veteran left-hander David Price and reserve outfielder/first baseman Billy McKinney have also been left off, replaced by relievers Justin Bruihl and Evan Phillips, as the Dodgers will go with 13 position players and 13 pitchers. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Muncy was unlikely to be ready to return for the best-of-seven series against the Braves. The 31-year-old first-baseman has yet to resume baseball activities, but could be an option if the Dodgers make it back to the World Series later this month. • La Stella (Achilles) starting Game 5 vs. Dodgers
Tommy La Stella (Achilles) will start at second base and lead off on Thursday night in Game 5 of the NLDS against the Dodgers.

Advice: The Dodgers last-minute decision to pivot to righty reliever Corey Knebel as an opener ahead of lefty Julio Urías didn't alter the Giants' lineup dramatically, but they waited until after pre-game warmups to see how La Stella, who has been bothered by an Achilles issue for the last few weeks, responded before submitting their official card for the winner-take-all affair. • La Stella (Achilles) available off bench in Game 5
Giants manager Gabe Kepler said Wednesday that Tommy La Stella (Achilles) will be available off the bench for Thursday's winner-take-all NLDS Game 5 showdown against the Dodgers.

Advice: La Stella has been dealing with a lingering Achilles issue for the last few weeks, which led to his early exit from Tuesday's Game 4 loss to the Dodgers. The Giants will roll with their usual righty-heavy lineup against lefty Julio Urías, but the veteran infielder should be available to take a couple at-bats in the later stages of the contest.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 3:48 pm

  • La Stella (Achilles) expected to be ready for Gm 5
Giants manager Gabe Kapler said late Tuesday that he expects Tommy La Stella (Achilles) to be ready for NLDS Game 5 on Thursday.

Advice: La Stella continues to be bothered by tightness in his left Achilles tendon -- he departed early from NLDS Games 3 and 4 the last two nights -- but it will be an all-hands-on-deck approach for Thursday's series-deciding tilt at Oracle Park. • Freddie Freeman home run sends Braves to NLCS
Freddie Freeman smacked a go-ahead solo home run off of Josh Hader in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday to propel the Braves to an NLDS series win over the Brewers.

Advice: Hader hadn't given up a run since July 28 or a home run to a left-handed batter all season. He struck out both Eddie Rosario and Dansby Swanson to kick off the frame, but the flamethrowing reliever left a slider over the plate on his first offering to Freeman and the stud first baseman swatted it out to left center. It was his fifth career postseason home run. Freeman had a game-high three hits Tuesday, also adding a single and a double. NBCSportsEDGE.com Tuesday, 6:25 pm
