  • Kevin Plawecki catching for Red Sox on Friday
Kevin Plawecki is starting at catcher and batting ninth for the Red Sox on Friday against the Astros in Game 6 of the ALCS.

Advice: Plawecki has caught both Nathan Eovaldi starts this series, with Christian Vazquez handling the other four games. The Red Sox also moved Hunter Renfroe -- who has one hit in the series -- down to the eight spot. Today, 1:35 pm
  • Austin Wynns outrighted to Triple-A
Orioles sent C Austin Wynns outright to Triple-A Norfolk.

Advice: He's now off the 40-man roster. Wynns has a .580 OPS over parts of three major league seasons. Today, 11:15 am

  • Cubs outright Tyler Payne to Triple-A Iowa
Cubs sent C Tyler Payne outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Payne made his lone big-league appearance in the Cubs' regular season finale on October 3 after spending the entire 2021 campaign at Triple-A Iowa. The 28-year-old backstop will continue to serve as organizational catching depth. Wednesday, 5:42 pm

  • Yasmani Grandal undergoes right knee surgery
Yasmani Grandal is expected to be ready for spring training after undergoing right knee surgery.

Advice: Grandal made the announcement on his personal Instagram after undergoing a procedure on his right knee. The 32-year-old veteran backstop underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left knee back in July, which kept him sidelined until late August. The on-base machine slashed a robust .240/.420/.520 with 60 runs scored, 23 home runs and 62 RBI across 375 plate appearances this season. Wednesday, 4:53 pm

  • Cashman doesn't commit to Sanchez as catcher
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman didn't commit to the idea of Gary Sanchez returning as the team's primary catcher next season.

Advice: Cashman also didn't rule out Sanchez returning, but he plans to evaluate all aspects of their roster as they look ahead to 2022. "I know Gary has worked his tail off," explained Cashman. "At times, the results might not be there, but I am proud that we have a guy with a lot of heart, a lot of care, a lot of effort." In other words, Sanchez's ability behind the plate isn't for a lack of trying. Still, the 28-year-old hit just .204/.307/.423 over 440 plate appearances this year, but he also slugged 23 homers while improving his contact rate. He remains an intriguing bat, even if full-time catching isn't in his future. Tuesday, 9:20 am

  • Cubs designate C Castillo for assignment
Cubs designated C Erick Castillo for assignment.

Advice: Castillo was called up late in the season with the Cubs' hurting for catching depth. The 28-year-old actually notched two hits in eight at-bats during his first call-up to the majors. He's mostly organizational depth, though. Monday, 1:29 pm
    W, 3-2 @StL
  • Cubs designate C Payne for assignment
Cubs designated C Tyler Payne for assignment.

Advice: Payne was called up just before the season came to a close, but now he's off the 40-man roster once again. The 28-year-old hit .231/.291/.363 with four home runs over 59 games in Double-A this year. Monday, 1:25 pm
    W, 3-2 @StL
  • Vazquez in Boston's lineup for ALCS Game 3
Christian Vazquez is in the starting lineup for Game 3 of the ALCS against the Astros.

Advice: Kevin Plawecki made the start on Saturday and caught Nathan Eovaldi, but Vazquez is back behind the plate to catch Eduardo Rodriguez. The full lineup for Boston: Kyle Schwarber 1B, Enrique Hernández CF, Rafael Devers 3B, Xander Bogaerts SS, Alex Verdugo LF, J.D. Martinez DH, Hunter Renfroe RF, Vázquez C, Christian Arroyo 2B. Jose Urquidy will make the start for Houston. Monday, 12:24 pm
  • Giants expect to have talks with Posey soon
Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi indicated on Monday that the team intends to have Buster Posey back next year.

Advice: Well, duh. Posey's contract includes a $22 million club option for next year or a $3 million buyout. The question is whether they'll simply pick up the option or negotiate an extension. Posey would obviously be negotiating from a position of strength, as the 34-year-old turned back the clock this year by slashing .304/.390/.499 with 18 homers over 113 games. He's also still valuable for his contributions behind the plate. Monday, 11:28 am

  • Will Smith goes deep as Dodgers drop NLCS Game 1
Will Smith blasted his third home run of the postseason, but it wasn't enough to lead the Dodgers to victory over the Braves in Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday night.

Advice: Smith socked a go-ahead solo shot off of Max Fried in the fourth inning to give the Dodgers a 2-1 advantage. That would wind up being the extent of their scoring in the contest. Smith finished the night 1-for-4 and is now slashing .280/.379/.720 with three homers and four RBI during the postseason. Saturday, 8:30 pm

  • Joseph Odom elects free agency
Joseph Odom has elected free agency.

Advice: Odom served as organizational catching depth for the Rays, appearing in two games at the major-league level this season. The 29-year-old backstop should be able to find a new home this offseason, but will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal. Saturday, 5:02 am

  • Beau Taylor elects free agency
Beau Taylor has elected free agency.

Advice: Taylor has opted to test the free agent waters this offseason, rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville. The 31-year-old backstop should be able to latch on as organizational catching depth somewhere this offseason. He last appeared in the majors back in 2020. Wednesday, 5:10 pm

  • Pirates release Joe Hudson
    Pirates released C Joe Hudson.

Advice: Hudson was released earlier this month after spending the entire 2021 campaign at Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a lackluster .188/.269/.292 triple-slash line with three home runs across 175 plate appearances. The 30-year-old backstop appeared in nine games with the Mariners during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. He should be able to latch on as extra catching depth with a minor-league deal this offseason. Wednesday, 2:03 pm

  • Will Smith cranks second homer of NLDS
Will Smith popped a two-run home run and added a double Tuesday in the Dodgers' NLDS Game 4 win over the Giants.

Advice: Smith's two-run shot off of Jake McGee in the bottom of the eighth inning padded the Dodgers' lead. It's the catcher's second long ball of the series and he's now reached base eight times in the four contests. Smith had two of the five hits in Game 1 against Logan Webb, who will start the win-or-go-home Game 5 on Thursday. Tuesday, 9:59 pm
    W, 10-3 vs Mil
  • Vogt undergoes sports hernia surgery
Stephen Vogt required surgery for a sports hernia.

Advice: Vogt is expected to be recovered by spring training. The veteran backstop dealt with a hip injury down the stretch and was outright off the Braves' 40-man roster this past weekend. He turns 37 in November. Tuesday, 12:16 pm
