    • Trevor Megill slams door on Rockies in ninth
      Trevor Megill slammed the door on the Rockies in the ninth inning on Tuesday evening, preserving a one-run lead to notch his 18th save of the season.

      Advice: The Brewers rallied to score twice in the top half of the ninth inning, setting the stage for Megill to come on and do his thing. The 30-year-old hurler made it look easy once again, getting Ezequiel Tovar on a fly ball to center and Brendan Rodgers on a swinging third strike to begin the inning. He did allow a two-out single to Ryan McMahon, but battled back to get Elias Diaz on a swinging third strike to end it. Megill has been awesome in the closer’s role for the Brewers this season, converting 18 of his 19 save chances while registering a masterful 1.59 ERA over 28 1/3 innings.       David Bednar (oblique) has resumed playing catch.

      Advice: Bednar is expected to progress to throwing off a bullpen mound in the coming days. He landed on the injured list back in late June with a left oblique strain and will most likely be on the shelf until after the Midsummer Classic in a few weeks.       Bryan Woo (hamstring) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session over the weekend.

      Advice: Mariners manager Scott Servais told reporters Woo will throw a more extended side session this week. The 24-year-old righty hit the injured list last week with a right hamstring strain, but the fact that he’s already throwing is a sign that he’s not going to require a lengthy absence. It’s possible he’ll make it back prior to the All-Star break, but the most likely outcome is that he’ll be ready to go shortly afterwards. Rotoworld Tuesday, 5:21 pm

    • Nearing bullpen session
      Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Tuesday that Bednar (oblique) has progressed to throwing from 120 feet and should soon resume mound work, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

      Advice: The right-hander was briefly shut down from throwing after he landed on the injured list June 23 with an oblique strain. Bednar will be eligible to be reinstated to the active roster soon, but he could spend more than the 15-day minimum on the shelf since he's yet to get back on the mound.     • Blake: Rodón working to adjust gameplan
      Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said Carlos Rodón is working to adjust his approach as team’s key on hitting his fastball.

      Advice: Speaking to The Athletic, Matt Blake said he doesn’t have long-term concerns with Rodón despite the left-hander allowing 20 earned runs and a 1.253 OPS in his last three outings. “I think it’s being ready to adapt your plan early because it’s clear that teams that can hit the fastball are targeting him early,” Blake said. “There are more guys like him who throw the ball hard with good profiles and... there’s just less room for error with that stuff. Even if that’s how you got paid, that’s not necessarily your map for success down the road. The more we can adjust and adapt to the league and the sooner we can do that, the easier it is...You’re not asking him to be crafty, but you’ve got to have a better rhythm than that.” Rotoworld Monday, 8:25 am

      Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings against the Astros. He struck out three.

      Advice: Severino was highly efficient if not incredibly effective, needing just 79 pitches to complete seven innings despite allowing four runs and nine baserunners while throwing a first-pitch strike to just 13 of 28 batters. He also struck out only three after fanning a season-high 10 batters in his previous outing. It's the fifth consecutive start in which he's gone at least six innings, though it's the second time within those starts that he allowed at least four earned runs.       Luis Severino allowed four runs in seven innings against the Astros on Sunday. He struck out three and walked one.

      Advice: Severino pitched better than his line would indicate. The Astros dinked and dunked most of their hits as Severino pounded the zone with sinkers. He threw that pitch 63% of the time along with 14% four-seam fastballs along with 5% cutters; that made 82% of his total pitches fastball variations. This strategy has helped fuel Severino’s bounce-back season with a 3.42 ERA, yet only 74 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings. Rotoworld Sunday, 4:35 pm
       
    • Paul Sewald lowers ERA to 0.54 on Sunday
      Paul Sewald struck out two in a perfect ninth inning on Sunday against the Athletics.

      Advice: It was a non-save situation, with Arizona leading by four runs entering the final frame, but Sewald remained locked-in nonetheless, needing just 13 pitches (11 strikes) to end the game. The 34-year-old righty has reeled off 17 consecutive scoreless appearances since giving up one run back on May 7 in his season debut. He’s converted all 11 of his save chances this season and boasts a microscopic 0.54 ERA, 0.48 WHIP and 15/3 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings (18 appearances).
