  • Sneed could be heading to pitch in Japan
Multiple reports state that free agent right-handed pitcher Cy Sneed is being pursued by the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Advice: This is the same club that signed former Pittsburgh Pirate Jose Osuna recently. Sneed, 28, appeared in 18 games with the Astros in 2020, and he registered a 5.71 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 21/10 K/BB ratio. He's been an up-and-down arm over the last couple of seasons, and a successful stint in Japan could help improve his stock going forward.  Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:44 pm

  • Jose Osuna signs with Tokyo Yakult Swallows
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Jose Osuna has signed with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Advice: The Pirates designated Osuna for assignment last week, and he's found a new home relatively quickly. The 27-year-old hit just .205/.244/.397 last year with four homers and a 16/4 K/BB ratio in 82 plate appearances. The year before, however, Osuna hit 10 homers with a .756 OPS in 95 games. If Osuna hits well in Japan, it certainly seems likely that he could be back in an MLB role in a year or two.  Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 5:46 pm

  • Report: Prosecutor to request warrant for Martinez
Hector Gomez of Z101 Sports reports that prosecutor Osvaldo Bonilla will request a warrant against Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez.

Advice: The warrant comes after Martinez participated in a street party the previous weekend in the Dominican Republic. He will be charged with violating all the social distancing protocols and the mandatory use of masks at the gathering. A statement on Monday from the Cardinals acknowledged that they were "gathering details  about his participation after a video surfaced that showed him riding a motorbike with a passenger through a crowd on on a seaside street. More information on the potential arrest should present itself in the coming days, but it's possible Martinez will face disciplinary action on top of any punishment he receives for the violation. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch tweets that the hurler is expected to pay fines, according to a representative.  Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 5:23 pm

  • Molina notes that Yankees, Mets, others interested
In an interview with Mas Que Pelota, free agent catcher Yadier Molina mentioned that the Yankees, Mets, Padres and Angels have shown interest this offseason.

Advice: Molina, 38, also notes that he would like to return to St. Louis, and that he wants to play two more seasons. This comes a couple weeks after a report from Jon Heyman of MLB Network noting that there were 3-f4 other teams long with the Yankees, Mets and Cardinals were interested in the backstop. It still seems very likely that the potential Hall of Famer stays in St. Louis, but it doesn't appear it will be from a lack of interest.  Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 1:12 pm

  • Report says no charges coming for Randy Arozarena
According to the Mexican newspaper PorEsto, Randy Arozarena has been released after a 48-hour hold and will not face charges for a domestic incident involving his daughter and his daughter's mother.

Advice: Arozarena was detained in Mexico's Yucatan state on Tuesday on allegations of domestic violence and a disagreement over custody of the young child. His lawyer, Carlos Chable, told PorEsto that "there were not enough elements to bring it to trial" (translated from Spanish) and that "there is no longer a crime to prosecute" (also translated). Arozarena could still be subject to some sort of discipline from Major League Baseball once the commissioner's office completes its own investigation into the incident, which was partially caught on video. • Wander Franco being evaluated for arm injury
Rays SS prospect Wander Franco is headed back to the United States for further evaluation of an arm injury.

Advice: Franco came down with discomfort in his right biceps earlier this week while playing for Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League, and there's at least some level of concern that it might be serious. The 19-year-old shortstop, widely considered the top overall prospect in baseball, had batted .350/.435/.500 with one home run and one stolen base through five games (23 plate appearances) this winter in the DOWL. • Derek Law inks minors deal with Twins
Twins signed RHP Derek Law to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Law broke the news himself on his Twitter account. The 30-year-old reliever didn't pitch in the majors at all in 2020 and has had trouble replicating the success from his rookie season back in 2016. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 5:12 pm

  • Brian O'Grady released by Rays
    Rays released 1B/OF Brian O'Grady.

  • Renfroe now on the market after clearing waivers
    Rays released OF Hunter Renfroe.

Advice: Renfroe cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week and is now officially a free agent. The 28-year-old is coming off a rotten 2020 campaign which saw him post a .156/.252/.393 batting line, and the Rays didn't want to give him a raise in arbitration. Renfroe doesn't hit righties very well, but he crushes lefties and is a solid defender who also comes with three years of team control. He'll have suitors. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:59 pm

  • Pirates DFA first baseman Will Craig on Wed.
Pirates designated 1B Will Craig for assignment.

Advice: Ashton Goudeau, claimed off waivers from the Rockies on Wednesday, will fill the vacant 40-man roster spot. Craig, 26, went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his first taste of MLB action this past season in Pittsburgh. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:18 pm

  • Indians DFA right-hander Adam Cimber on Wed.
Indians designated RHP Adam Cimber for assignment.

Advice: The move clears out a 40-man roster spot for Jordan Humphreys, who was claimed off waivers from the Giants on Wednesday. Cimber has posted a 4.37 ERA over his last 68 major league innings between 2019-2020. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:15 pm

  • Orioles officially release Renato Nunez; now FA
    Orioles released 1B/DH Renato Nunez.

Advice: Nunez went unclaimed on waivers, but he should now command multiple offers in free agency after putting up a strong .816 OPS with 12 home runs and 31 RBI over 52 games for Baltimore during the shortened 2020 campaign. NL teams may have been hesitant to claim him given the still-uncertain DH situation for 2021. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:10 pm

  • Orioles DFA right-hander Thomas Eshelman
Orioles designated RHP Thomas Eshelman for assignment.

Advice: This move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Chris Shaw, who has been claimed off waivers from the Giants. Eshelman, 26, holds a career 5.22 ERA and 38/20 K/BB ratio in 70 2/3 total major league frames. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:08 pm

  • Indians claim Jordan Humphreys from the Giants
Indians claimed RHP Jordan Humphreys off waivers from the Giants.

Advice: Humphreys was designated for assignment by the Giants last week. The 24-year-old has yet to appear in a major league game but owns a promising 2.60 ERA with 177 strikeouts in 169 2/3 career minor league innings. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:06 pm

  • Orioles claim Chris Shaw off waivers from SF
Orioles claimed 1B/OF Chris Shaw off waivers from the Giants.

Advice: Thomas Eshelman has been designated for assignment by Baltimore in a corresponding roster move. Shaw, 27, has put up strong numbers in the upper minors but is a career .153/.244/.222 hitter at the MLB level. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:03 pm

  • Arozarena detained in Mexico for domestic incident
Jeff Passan of ESPN confirms that Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena was detained in Mexico for an incident in which he allegedly attempted to take his young daughter from her mother while also assaulting the woman’s father.

Advice: This confirms reports from Spanish-language newspapers Diario de Yucatan and Yucatan Ahora. It's a very troubling and sad situation. Video has surfaced online of the aftermath, with neighbors stopping Arozarena at a traffic light. Per Passan, MLB's department of investigations is looking into the alleged incident. The prosecutor in Mexico expects to provide more information on the case in the coming days. There are clear legal implications here, but Arozarena could also be subject to a suspension from MLB via their domestic violence policy. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 12:17 pm

  • Cardinals 'gathering details' on Martinez incident
In a statement Monday, the Cardinals acknowledged that they are "gathering details" about Carlos Martinez's participation in a street party this past weekend in the Dominican Republic.

Advice: Martinez can be seen in videos riding a motorbike with a female passenger through a large crowd of people on a seaside street, with loud music blaring. He was not wearing a face covering of any kind, and neither were many of the people surrounding him. The full statement from the Cardinals: "The St. Louis Cardinals were informed earlier today that Carlos Martínez had participated in a public gathering event this past weekend in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. We are currently gathering details from this event, but it is our understanding that Carlos was not arrested nor are there any pending legal charges against him. Certainly, we would not condone anyone from our organization knowingly violating community laws or health regulations." Rotoworld.com Monday, 1:08 pm

  • Franco dealing with discomfort in right bicep
Rays shortstop prospect Wander Franco is currently dealing with discomfort in his right bicep.

Advice: Franco, 19, is crushing the ball in the Dominican League with a .350/.435/.500 line. The injury does not appear to be serious, and he's considered day-to-day at this point. Unanimously considered the top prospect in baseball, Franco has a chance to make a significant impact as soon as this summer, and is worth keeping an eye on in redrafts.  Rotoworld.com Sunday, 1:05 pm

  • Rays designate Brian O'Grady for assignment
Rays designated OF Brain O'Grady for assignment.

Advice: The 28-year-old outfielder appeared in just two games for the Rays during the 2020 season, going 2-for-5 (.400) with a double, stolen base and two runs scored. He spent most of the 2019 season at Triple-A, where he slashed .280/.359/.550 with 28 homers, 77 RBI and 20 stolen bases.  Rotoworld.com Friday, 8:53 pm

  • Giants designate Jordan Humphreys for assignment
Giants designated RHP Jordan Humphreys for assignment.

Advice: Humphreys -- who was acquired from the Mets in the Billy Hamilton trade -- didn't make it to the big leagues in 2020 and finished the season on the restricted list while dealing with a family issue. The 24-year-old missed the entire 2018 season and most of 2019 as well while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but posted a 0.77 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 8/4 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings in the Arizona Fall League following the 2019 campaign. He's an intriguing arm that could soon be on the open market. Rotoworld.com Friday, 7:49 pm

  • Rays designate Hunter Renfroe for assignment
Rays designated OF Hunter Renfroe for assignment.

Advice: It had been speculated that the cost-cutting Rays could consider non-tendering Renfroe this offseason in order to shed some payroll -- as he's projected to earn more than $3.5 million in arbitration this winter. Still, it's somewhat surprising to see the Rays give up on their starting right fielder after just one miserable season. Renfroe slashed a miserable .156/.252/.393 with eight homers, 22 RBI and a 37/14 K/BB ratio in 139 plate appearances for the American League Champions. He's just a season removed from slugging 33 homers in 494 plate appearances though, so there should be interest in his services from around the league. Rotoworld.com Friday, 7:43 pm

  • Giants designate Chris Shaw for assignment
Giants designated 1B/OF Chris Shaw for assignment.

Advice: The 27-year-old spent time during the 2020 season at the Giants' alternate training site, but never got an opportunity with the big league club. Shaw -- the Giants' first round pick from the 2015 draft (31st overall) -- is a career .153/.244/.222 hitter with one homer, seven RBI and a 31/9 K/BB ratio in 82 plate appearances in the majors. Perhaps he would benefit from a change of scenery. Rotoworld.com Friday, 7:36 pm

  • Orioles designate Renato Nunez for assignment
Orioles designated 1B/DH Renato Nunez for assignment.

Advice: Hmm. This is one of the more puzzling moves of the day. The 26-year-old slugger has led the Orioles in home runs each of the last two seasons, slugging 31 long balls in 2019 and 12 more during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He slashed .256/.324/.492 with 12 homers and 31 RBI over 52 games during the 2020 campaign. The Orioles needed to free up space on the 40-man roster to protect players from the Rule-5 draft, but inexplicably chose to hold onto the corpse of Chris Davis instead of Nunez. The Orioles could still attempt to trade him in the next few years, and the team acquiring him would control him through arbitration for the next four seasons. Rotoworld.com Friday, 6:24 pm

  • Pirates designate Jose Osuna for assignment
Pirates designate INF/OF Jose Osuna for assignment.

Advice: This move comes as a bit of a surprise, as Osuna had a very productive season offensively in 2019 before seeing his production fall off of a cliff in 2020. During the truncated season, the 27-year-old slashed just .205/.244/.397 with four homers, 11 RBI and a 16/4 K/BB ratio over 82 plate appearances. It seems likely that he'll refuse the outright assignment and explore his options on the free agent market. Rotoworld.com Friday, 5:11 pm
