  • Jose Osuna signs with Tokyo Yakult Swallows
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Jose Osuna has signed with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Advice: The Pirates designated Osuna for assignment last week, and he's found a new home relatively quickly. The 27-year-old hit just .205/.244/.397 last year with four homers and a 16/4 K/BB ratio in 82 plate appearances. The year before, however, Osuna hit 10 homers with a .756 OPS in 95 games. If Osuna hits well in Japan, it certainly seems likely that he could be back in an MLB role in a year or two. Yesterday, 5:46 pm

  • Report says no charges coming for Randy Arozarena
According to the Mexican newspaper PorEsto, Randy Arozarena has been released after a 48-hour hold and will not face charges for a domestic incident involving his daughter and his daughter's mother.

Advice: Arozarena was detained in Mexico's Yucatan state on Tuesday on allegations of domestic violence and a disagreement over custody of the young child. His lawyer, Carlos Chable, told PorEsto that "there were not enough elements to bring it to trial" (translated from Spanish) and that "there is no longer a crime to prosecute" (also translated). Arozarena could still be subject to some sort of discipline from Major League Baseball once the commissioner's office completes its own investigation into the incident, which was partially caught on video. • Brian O'Grady released by Rays
    Rays released 1B/OF Brian O'Grady.

Advice: O'Grady had been designated for assignment and is now a free agent after clearing waivers. The 28-year-old will probably have to settle for a minor league contract. Wednesday, 2:12 pm

  • Renfroe now on the market after clearing waivers
    Rays released OF Hunter Renfroe.

Advice: Renfroe cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week and is now officially a free agent. The 28-year-old is coming off a rotten 2020 campaign which saw him post a .156/.252/.393 batting line, and the Rays didn't want to give him a raise in arbitration. Renfroe doesn't hit righties very well, but he crushes lefties and is a solid defender who also comes with three years of team control. He'll have suitors. Wednesday, 12:59 pm

  • Rockies acquire Jameson Hannah in four-player deal
Rockies acquired OF Jameson Hannah and RHP Robert Stephenson from the Reds for RHP Jeff Hoffman and RHP Case Williams.

Advice: Cincinnati picked up Hannah from the Athletics last summer as part of the Tanner Roark trade. The 23-year-old former second-round pick was robbed of key development time during MLB's shortened 2020 campaign and had a rather underwhelming .274/.339/.369 batting line in 491 plate appearances between High-A Stockton and High-A Daytona in 2019. Williams probably carries more perceived upside of the two minor leaguers included in this four-player swap given that he's 18 years old and was just drafted in the fourth round this past June. • Report: Reds, Rockies working on four-player swap
According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Rockies are acquiring minor league outfielder Jameson Hannah in a trade with the Reds.

Advice: Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic adds that it will be a "2-for-2" swap involving one "lesser" major league pitcher and one minor leaguer from each organization. Murray says the trade is "in place," so the other names should be revealed soon, though it sounds like it will be a relatively insignificant transaction in the end. Hannah, 23, slashed .274/.339/.369 with two homers and eight steals in 110 games of High-A ball in 2019. Wednesday, 10:22 am

  • Astros, O's, Red Sox considering FA Yasiel Puig's Mark Feinsand reports that the Astros, Orioles, and Red Sox are among the teams showing interest in free agent outfielder Yasiel Puig.

Advice: Puig changed agents earlier this month -- from Dan Horwits and Cesar Suare of the Beverly Hill Sports Council to Rachel Luba of Luba Sports -- as he looks to get back into Major League Baseball following a lost 2020 season. He struck a reported deal with the Braves in mid-July, but it fell apart shortly thereafter after Puig tested positive for COVID-19. The 29-year-old had a pretty good showing in 2019 with the Reds and Indians, and Feinsand notes that other teams "could also be in the mix" beyond Houston, Baltimore, and Boston. Tuesday, 6:52 pm

  • Arozarena detained in Mexico for domestic incident
Jeff Passan of ESPN confirms that Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena was detained in Mexico for an incident in which he allegedly attempted to take his young daughter from her mother while also assaulting the woman’s father.

Advice: This confirms reports from Spanish-language newspapers Diario de Yucatan and Yucatan Ahora. It's a very troubling and sad situation. Video has surfaced online of the aftermath, with neighbors stopping Arozarena at a traffic light. Per Passan, MLB's department of investigations is looking into the alleged incident. The prosecutor in Mexico expects to provide more information on the case in the coming days. There are clear legal implications here, but Arozarena could also be subject to a suspension from MLB via their domestic violence policy. Tuesday, 12:17 pm

  • FA Yasiel Puig being represented by Rachel Luba
Yasiel Puig is now being represented by agent Rachel Luba of Luba Sports.

Advice: Luba also reps Trevor Bauer, the top starting pitcher on the open market this winter. Puig had been with Dan Horwits and Cesar Suare of the Beverly Hills Sports Council but apparently cut ties after failing to latch on with a team during the 2020 campaign. He had an agreement in place with the Braves in July, but it was scrapped after he tested positive for COVID-19. The 29-year-old free agent outfielder registered a .785 OPS with 24 home runs and 19 stolen bases in 149 games (611 plate appearances) between the Reds and Indians in 2019. Monday, 5:25 pm

  • Thames has interest from MLB, NPB, KBO teams
According to Jon Morosi of, free agent Eric Thames is drawing interest from MLB, NPB, and KBO teams.

Advice: Thames struggled to a .203/.300/.317 batting line in 41 games this past season with the Nationals, who then declined his $4 million option for 2021 late last month. But the 34-year-old slugger should do pretty well for himself this winter given all the avenues he's open to for possible offers. Thames spent the 2014-2016 seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) before joining the Brewers ahead of the 2017 campaign. Monday, 3:42 pm

  • Schebler inks minor league deal with Angels
Angels signed OF Scott Schebler to a minor league contract.

Advice: Schebler will make $900,000 if he makes the big club, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale. The 30-year-old logged just one at-bat in 2020 and has just 96 major-league plate appearances over the past two seasons, a far cry from his 30-homer season in 2017. Saturday, 10:12 am

  • Rockies sign Connor Joe to minor league contract
Rockies signed OF Connor Joe to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: The 28-year-old outfielder was diagnosed with testicular cancer in February and missed the entire 2020 season after undergoing surgery. He's now cancer-free though and anxious to get his career back on track. In 2019, Joe slashed a mighty impressive .300/.426/.503 with 15 homers, 68 RBI and an 81/72 K/BB ratio across 105 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City. Friday, 10:17 pm

  • Marlins add Jerar Encarnacion to 40-man roster
Marlins purchased the contract of OF Jerar Encarnacion.

Advice: The 23-year-old outfielder had a breakthrough season offensively in 2019, slashing .276/.331/.425 with 16 homers, 71 RBI and six stolen bases between Class-A Clinton and High-A Jupiter in 2019. He followed that up by hitting .269/.315/.433 with three homers and 16 RBI in 19 games during the Arizona Fall League. He's still a couple of years away from challenging for a spot on the Marlins' big league roster, but Encarnacion is an intriguing bat to watch. Friday, 10:01 pm
  • Rays designate Brian O'Grady for assignment
Rays designated OF Brain O'Grady for assignment.

Advice: The 28-year-old outfielder appeared in just two games for the Rays during the 2020 season, going 2-for-5 (.400) with a double, stolen base and two runs scored. He spent most of the 2019 season at Triple-A, where he slashed .280/.359/.550 with 28 homers, 77 RBI and 20 stolen bases. Friday, 8:53 pm

  • Phillies add Simon Muzziotti to 40-man roster
Phillies purchased the contract of OF Simon Muzziotti.

Advice: The 21-year-old outfielder had a breakout season offensively in 2019, slashing .287/.337/.372 with three homers, 28 RBI and 21 stolen bases over 110 games at High-A Clearwater. He should open the 2021 season at Double-A. Friday, 8:47 pm
  • Giants add Alexander Canario to 40-man roster
Giants purchased the contract of OF Alexander Canario.

Advice: The 20-year-old prospect is now protected from the Rule-5 draft. He recently underwent surgery to repair a torn left labrum that he suffered after dislocating his shoulder in the Arizona instructional league. Canario broke out offensively in 2019 when he slashed .318/.377/.623 with 16 homers, 54 RBI and four swipes in 59 games, mostly at Low-A Salem-Keizer. Friday, 7:53 pm

  • Rays designate Hunter Renfroe for assignment
Rays designated OF Hunter Renfroe for assignment.

Advice: It had been speculated that the cost-cutting Rays could consider non-tendering Renfroe this offseason in order to shed some payroll -- as he's projected to earn more than $3.5 million in arbitration this winter. Still, it's somewhat surprising to see the Rays give up on their starting right fielder after just one miserable season. Renfroe slashed a miserable .156/.252/.393 with eight homers, 22 RBI and a 37/14 K/BB ratio in 139 plate appearances for the American League Champions. He's just a season removed from slugging 33 homers in 494 plate appearances though, so there should be interest in his services from around the league. Friday, 7:43 pm

  • Royals purchase contract of Khalil Lee on Friday
Royals purchased the contract of OF Khalil Lee.

Advice: The 22-year-old outfielder hit .264/.363/.372 with eight homers, 51 RBI and 53 stolen bases in 129 games at Double-A Arkansas in 2019. Should he get an opportunity at the big league level in 2021, the stolen base potential would make him quite appealing from a fantasy perspective. Friday, 7:25 pm

  • Orioles add Yusniel Diaz to 40-man roster Friday
Orioles purchased the contract of OF Yusniel Diaz.

Advice: The highly-touted 24-year-old outfielder hit .265/.341/.464 with 11 long balls and 55 RBI over 85 games across three minor league levels in 2019 -- most of which came at Double-A Bowie. He should begin the 2021 campaign at Triple-A Norfolk and could get an opportunity to debut with the big league club before the season is through. Friday, 6:52 pm

  • Pirates designate Jose Osuna for assignment
Pirates designate INF/OF Jose Osuna for assignment.

Advice: This move comes as a bit of a surprise, as Osuna had a very productive season offensively in 2019 before seeing his production fall off of a cliff in 2020. During the truncated season, the 27-year-old slashed just .205/.244/.397 with four homers, 11 RBI and a 16/4 K/BB ratio over 82 plate appearances. It seems likely that he'll refuse the outright assignment and explore his options on the free agent market. Friday, 5:11 pm
