  • Report: Prosecutor to request warrant for Martinez
Hector Gomez of Z101 Sports reports that prosecutor Osvaldo Bonilla will request a warrant against Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez.

Advice: The warrant comes after Martinez participated in a street party the previous weekend in the Dominican Republic. He will be charged with violating all the social distancing protocols and the mandatory use of masks at the gathering. A statement on Monday from the Cardinals acknowledged that they were "gathering details  about his participation after a video surfaced that showed him riding a motorbike with a passenger through a crowd on on a seaside street. More information on the potential arrest should present itself in the coming days, but it's possible Martinez will face disciplinary action on top of any punishment he receives for the violation. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch tweets that the hurler is expected to pay fines, according to a representative. Yesterday, 5:23 pm

  • Derek Law inks minors deal with Twins
Twins signed RHP Derek Law to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Law broke the news himself on his Twitter account. The 30-year-old reliever didn't pitch in the majors at all in 2020 and has had trouble replicating the success from his rookie season back in 2016. Wednesday, 5:12 pm

  • Orioles DFA right-hander Thomas Eshelman
Orioles designated RHP Thomas Eshelman for assignment.

Advice: This move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Chris Shaw, who has been claimed off waivers from the Giants. Eshelman, 26, holds a career 5.22 ERA and 38/20 K/BB ratio in 70 2/3 total major league frames. Wednesday, 12:08 pm
  • Indians claim Jordan Humphreys from the Giants
Indians claimed RHP Jordan Humphreys off waivers from the Giants.

Advice: Humphreys was designated for assignment by the Giants last week. The 24-year-old has yet to appear in a major league game but owns a promising 2.60 ERA with 177 strikeouts in 169 2/3 career minor league innings. Wednesday, 12:06 pm
  • Red Sox outright RHP Ryan Weber to AAA level
Red Sox sent RHP Ryan Weber outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: Weber was a DFA for the Red Sox last Friday but will remain with the organization for now. The 30-year-old right-hander owns a career 4.86 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 99/35 K/BB ratio in 157 1/3 major league innings. Wednesday, 11:40 am

  • Reds get Hoffman in four-player trade with COL
Reds acquired RHP Jeff Hoffman and RHP Case Williams from the Rockies for RHP Robert Stephenson and OF Jameson Hannah.

Advice: Hoffman had some buzz back in 2015, when he was the headlining piece in the Rockies' trade of Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto, but he has struggled to the tune of a career 6.40 ERA in 38 starts and 30 relief appearances at the MLB level. That includes a 9.28 ERA over 21 1/3 innings of relief with the Reds in 2020. The former first-round pick of the Blue Jays could get another chance to start in Cincinnati and may stumble into better rate stats given the change in ballparks, but this move still doesn't boost his fantasy profile all that much. • Reds acquiring Jeff Hoffman in four-player trade
FanSided's Robert Murray reports that the Reds have acquired Jeff Hoffman and Case Williams from the Rockies for Robert Stephenson and Jameson Hannah.

Advice: Hoffman is a former first-round pick of the Blue Jays and was the centerpiece of the Troy Tulowitzki trade from 2015, but the 27-year-old right-hander has gone on to register a rough 6.40 ERA in 230 2/3 innings (38 starts, 30 relief appearances) for Colorado. Stephenson has a similar story as a former first-round pick of Cincinnati who holds a career 5.15 ERA at the MLB level. Physical exams are currently being conducted. Wednesday, 10:31 am

  • Report: Giants interested in FA LHP Jon Lester
Jon Morosi of reports that the Giants are interested in free agent left-hander Jon Lester.

Advice: The Giants are in need of a starter with Drew Smyly departing and Lester previously considered signing with the Giants before landing with the Cubs during his last foray into free agency. The 36-year-old became a free agent at the end of October after the Cubs declined his $25 million option for 2021. It came as no surprise after he posted a 5.16 ERA and 42/17 K/BB ratio in 61 innings across 12 starts this past season. He'd mostly be an innings-eater at this point of his career. Tuesday, 9:16 am

  • Report: Reds open to moving RHP Sonny Gray
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic hears from rival clubs that the Reds are "open to moving" right-hander Sonny Gray.

Advice: Gray is owed $10 million in each of the next two seasons with a $12 million club option for 2023, so it makes sense that the Reds would at least listen to clubs who might view him as a bargain compared to the pitchers available in free agency. The question is whether the Reds could deal Gray and still remain competitive next season, especially with Trevor Bauer already expected to depart via free agency. They'd almost certainly require younger and cheaper talent who could help them right away. Gray, 31, posted a 3.70 ERA and 72/26 K/BB ratio in 56 innings across 11 regular season starts this past season. Tuesday, 6:55 am

  • Braves announce 1-yr, $15M deal with RHP Morton
Braves signed RHP Charlie Morton to a one-year, $15 million contract.

Advice: The Braves have made a habit out of these one-year deals and this one could pay off big-time. Morton will join a rotation which already includes Max Fried, Ian Anderson, and the recently added Drew Smyly. With Kyle Wright and Bryse Wilson offering depth, the Braves don't necessarily have to rush back Mike Soroka has he returns from his Achilles tear. The Braves still have some work to do with Marcell Ozuna on the free agent market, but they are off to a good start in trying to secure another NL East title. Tuesday, 6:22 am
  • Braves, Charlie Morton agree to 1-year, $15M deal
Mark Feinsand of reports that the Braves and right-hander Charlie Morton have agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal.

Advice: It's the largest free agent contract thus far. Morton became a free agent at the end of October after the Rays declined a $15 million club option for 2021, but he ended up getting the same salary on the open market. And a big bonus is that he managed to stay close to home, as was his wish. The 37-year-old posted a disappointing 4.74 ERA and 1.395 WHIP in 38 regular-season innings (nine starts) this past season, but he showed an uptick in velocity along with better results during the Rays' postseason run. He'll join a Braves' rotation which has already added Drew Smyly this offseason. If Mike Soroka can come back healthy, this rotation could be dominant. Morton was originally drafted by the Braves in 2002 and pitched one season for the club before being traded to the Pirates in the Nate McLouth deal. Tuesday, 6:17 am
  • Royals release right-hander Glenn Sparkman
    Royals released RHP Glenn Sparkman.

Advice: Sparkman was designated for assignment over the weekend and has now officially been cut loose. The 28-year-old holds a career 5.99 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and 111/58 K/BB ratio in 180 1/3 innings at the MLB level. Monday, 7:09 pm

  • Braves showing 'strong interest' in Charlie Morton
Mark Bowman of writes that the Braves have "continued to show strong interest" in free agent starter Charlie Morton.

Advice: Atlanta inked lefty Drew Smyly to a one-year, $11 million deal last week, but the club is apparently not done searching for starting pitching help. Morton, 37, posted a disappointing 4.74 ERA and 1.395 WHIP in 38 regular-season innings (nine starts) this past summer with the Rays, though he did perform well in the playoffs as Tampa Bay marched all the way to the World Series.'s Mark Feinsand reported earlier this month that the veteran right-hander was drawing "some level of interest" from "at least" 8-10 teams. Monday, 4:02 pm
  • Rays 'open to the idea' of trading SP Blake Snell's Mark Feinsand reports that the Rays "have told other clubs that they’re open to the idea of trading Blake Snell" this offseason.

Advice: Feinsand's source notes that the reigning American League champions are "not actively shopping Snell" but will listen to offers in a quest to cut costs following MLB's abbreviated 2020 campaign. Snell, who turns 28 years old in early December, is owed $10.5 million in 2021, $12.5 million in 2022, and $16 million in 2023 as part of a five-year, $50 million contract extension he signed with Tampa Bay in the spring of 2019. The left-hander registered a 3.24 ERA and 63/18 K/BB ratio in 50 regular-season innings (11 starts) this summer before working to a 3.03 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 29 2/3 innings (six starts) in the playoffs. • Cardinals 'gathering details' on Martinez incident
In a statement Monday, the Cardinals acknowledged that they are "gathering details" about Carlos Martinez's participation in a street party this past weekend in the Dominican Republic.

Advice: Martinez can be seen in videos riding a motorbike with a female passenger through a large crowd of people on a seaside street, with loud music blaring. He was not wearing a face covering of any kind, and neither were many of the people surrounding him. The full statement from the Cardinals: "The St. Louis Cardinals were informed earlier today that Carlos Martínez had participated in a public gathering event this past weekend in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. We are currently gathering details from this event, but it is our understanding that Carlos was not arrested nor are there any pending legal charges against him. Certainly, we would not condone anyone from our organization knowingly violating community laws or health regulations." Monday, 1:08 pm

  • Report: Red Sox showing interest in LHP J.A. Happ
Jon Morosi of reports that the Red Sox are showing interest in free agent left-hander J.A. Happ.

Advice: Morosi has also reported interest from the Blue Jays and Angels in recent days. For what it's worth, the southpaw has enjoyed quite a bit of success at Fenway Park in his career, though anything would be an improvement over what the Red Sox put out there this past season. Happ, 38, posted a 3.47 ERA and 42/15 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 innings over nine starts with the Yankees in 2020. Monday, 8:52 am

  • Blue Jays interested in J.A. Happ
Jon Morosi of reports that the Blue Jays have interest in J.A. Happ.

Advice: Happ has had two previous stints in Toronto and evidently there could potentially be a third. The veteran left-hander turned 38 last month, but he's coming off a nice bounce-back season which saw him put up a 3.47 ERA and 42/15 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings. Morosi reported previously that the Angels also had interest in Happ. Sunday, 7:34 am

  • Angels have interest in left-hander J.A Happ
According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Angels are among the teams interested in free agent southpaw J.A. Happ.

Advice: Morosi notes that Angels new general manager Perry Minasian was working in the Blue Jays front office on two different occasions when they acquired Happ, so the interest shouldn't come as a big surprise. The 38-year-old actually pitched pretty well for the Yankees in 2020, compiling a 3.47 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 42/15 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings in his nine starts. Saturday, 4:06 pm

  • Reds add Vladimir Gutierrez to 40-man roster
Reds purchased the contract of RHP Vladimir Gutierrez.

Advice: This move protects the 25-year-old from being taken in the upcoming Rule-5 draft. Gutierrez was handed an 80-game PED suspension in June after testing positive for Stanozolol -- a synthetic steroid. In 2019, he posted a 6.04 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 117/48 K/BB ratio over 137 innings at Triple-A Louisville. Saturday, 1:45 pm
  • Twins purchase contract of Jordan Balazovic Friday
Twins purchased the contract of RHP Jordan Balazovic.

Advice: The 22-year-old right-hander is one of the top pitching prospects in the Twins' organization and isn't far from being big league ready. In 2019, he registered a 2.69 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 129/25 K/BB ratio over 93 2/3 innings between Class-A Cedar Rapids and High-A Fort Myers. He should open the 2021 campaign at Double-A and should get a chance to debut with the big league club at some point during the season. Saturday, 1:09 pm
  • Yankees purchase contract of Alexander Vizcaino
Yankees purchased the contract of RHP Alexander Vizcaino.

Advice: The last time we saw Vizcaino, the hard-throwing 23-year-old posted a 4.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 128/38 K/BB ratio over 115 innings between Class-A Charleston and High-A Tampa. He's likely to open the 2021 campaign in the starting rotation at Double-A. Friday, 10:10 pm
  • Giants designate Jordan Humphreys for assignment
Giants designated RHP Jordan Humphreys for assignment.

Advice: Humphreys -- who was acquired from the Mets in the Billy Hamilton trade -- didn't make it to the big leagues in 2020 and finished the season on the restricted list while dealing with a family issue. The 24-year-old missed the entire 2018 season and most of 2019 as well while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but posted a 0.77 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 8/4 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings in the Arizona Fall League following the 2019 campaign. He's an intriguing arm that could soon be on the open market. Friday, 7:49 pm
  • Royals designate Glenn Sparkman for assignment
Royals designated RHP Glenn Sparkman for assignment.

Advice: The 28-year-old hurler was a fixture in the Royals rotation in 2019, working 136 innings over 31 appearances (23 starts). He was limited to just four outings out of the bullpen in 2020 before hitting the injured list with a forearm strain. Sparkman owns a 5.99 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 180 1/3 career innings at the big league level. He'll likely have to settle for a minor league deal and an invitation to spring training. Friday, 7:07 pm

  • Red Sox designate Ryan Weber for assignment Friday
Red Sox designated RHP Ryan Weber for assignment.

Advice: The 30-year-old hurler logged some innings for the Red Sox during their disappointing 2020 season, registering a 4.40 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 27/14 K/BB ratio over 43 innings in his 17 appearances (five starts). Wherever he winds up, Weber can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes. Friday, 4:48 pm
