  • Reynolds receives interest from the Giants
Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports the Giants have reached out to Mark Reynolds in their search for a powerful bench bat.

Advice: The Giants' payroll has reached $200 million for the first time ever. Because they are subject to the luxury tax they would have to pay a 50 percent penalty on top of any free agent salary. The 33-year-old Reynolds' season ended early after he broke his hand in mid-September. He hit .282/.356/.450 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI in 118 games with the Rockies. Moving from Coors Field to AT&T Park would likely put a dent in his power output. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 5:54 pm

  • D'Backs sign Reymond Fuentes to minors deal
Diamondbacks signed OF Reymond Fuentes to a minor league contract.

Advice: The 25-year-old was a first round selection of the Red Sox in the 2009 draft. He appeared in 13 games for the Royals in 2016, slashing .317/.364/.341 with five RBI in 44 plate appearances. He'll likely be given an opportunity to compete for a reserve outfield spot on the club's Opening Day roster. Rotoworld.com Friday, 7:55 pm

Phillies signed 1B/OF Daniel Nava to a minor league contract.

Braves re-signed 2B/OF Emilio Bonifacio to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Bonifacio returns to the Braves after getting a brief shot with them in 2016, when he hit just .211/.268/.211 over 43 plate appearances. He'll compete for a utility job. Rotoworld.com Friday, 2:18 pm

  • Red Sox ink Junior Lake to minors deal
Red Sox signed OF Junior Lake to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Lake is a career .235/.278/.376 hitter over parts of four seasons in the majors. He'll turn 27 in March and is merely organizational depth. Rotoworld.com Friday, 2:15 pm

  • Broxton pleaded no contest on trespass charge
Keon Broxton pleaded no contest Monday to his trespassing charge.

Advice: A pre-trial deal was reached. Broxton was involved in an incident in November in which he refused to leave an area following a fight despite numerous warnings from police. It seems unlikely that Broxton will face any sort of discipline from Major League Baseball. Rotoworld.com Friday, 8:36 am

Marlins signed OF Matt den Dekker to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

  • Halos showed interest in Cards' Kolten Wong
SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports that the Angels showed interest in Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong at the Winter Meetings.

Advice: Cotillo adds, however, that the Cardinals are "asking a lot" and "unlikely to move him" this offseason. Wong batted just .240/.327/.355 with five home runs and seven stolen bases in 121 games this past year for St. Louis, but he plays good defense and remains an intriguing all-around talent at age 26. It doesn't make much sense for the Cardinals to sell low. Lock him in as their starter at the keystone for 2017. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 12:21 pm

  • Rangers sign Cesar Puello to minors deal
Rangers signed OF Cesar Puello to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Puello posted a cool .413 on-base percentage in 78 games this past season with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, though it came with only five home runs in 289 plate appearances. The 25-year-old outfielder has never appeared in a game at the major league level and seems doubtful to crack the Opening Day roster with Texas. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 6:59 am

Advice: Hoying was non-tendered by the Rangers earlier this month, but he's now back with the club on a non-roster invite to major league camp. The 27-year-old outfielder appeared in 39 games with Texas in 2016, slashing just .217/.265/.261 with no homers and five RBI. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 6:56 am

  • NYY open to trading Gardner within AL East
Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Wednesday at the Winter Meetings that he would not be afraid to trade Brett Gardner within the American League East.

Advice: Orioles manager Buck Showalter expressed some doubt about that earlier, but it all comes down to the return package for the rapidly-rebuilding Yanks. If the price is right, they'll go ahead and flip Gardner. The 33-year-old outfielder is under contract for $12 million in 2017 and $11 million in 2018 with a $12.5 million club option (or $2 million buyout) for 2019. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 5:50 pm

  • KC hasn't felt 'overwhelmed' on Dyson offers
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Royals "haven't felt overwhelmed by offers" for outfielder Jarrod Dyson.

Advice: Probably because the guy is a .260/.325/.353 career hitter in the major leagues and due to become a free agent next winter. Dyson plays great defense and has tremendous speed, but the Royals can't expect to get much talent in return. They might just hold on to Dyson, per Heyman, in the event a realistic trade partner can be found for Lorenzo Cain. Dyson was known to be drawing interest from the Orioles, Athletics, Rangers, and Cardinals. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 5:08 pm

  • Nieuwenhuis underwent nerve release surgery
Brewers general manager David Stearns said that Kirk Nieuwenhuis underwent nerve release surgery after the close of the 2016 season.

Advice: Nerve release surgeries and sports hernia surgeries are similar, but the good news for Nieuwenhuis is that the former has a speedier recovery attached to it. He initially injured his abdomen in mid-September. It would appear that the 29-year-old outfielder is on track for spring training barring a setback. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 3:37 pm

  • O's have spoken to Royals about OF Dyson
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Orioles have spoken to the Royals about Jarrod Dyson.

Advice: It's becoming very likely that Dyson is moved, and the Orioles and Athletics seem to be his most aggressive suitors. There's also been talk of interest from the Cardinals and Rangers. Dyson owns an ugly .260/.325/.353 career batting line at the major league level, but he's a great defensive outfielder and excellent baserunner. He'd fit well on pretty much any MLB roster, though probably not in an everyday role. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 2:43 pm

  • Yankees finalize deal with Matt Holliday
Yankees signed DH Matt Holliday to a one-year, $13 million contract.

Advice: The deal was reported over the weekend and it's now official. Holliday turns 37 next month and is coming off a year where he slugged 20 homers with a .782 OPS in 110 games while missing significant time with a fractured thumb. The plan calls for him to serve as the primary designated hitter, but he could also see occasional time in the outfield and at first base. He could have a better chance to stay healthy in this situation and we wouldn't rule out a return to relevancy in mixed fantasy leagues while playing in the AL East. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 12:04 pm

  • Royals acquire OF Jorge Soler from Cubs
Royals acquired OF Jorge Soler from the Cubs for RHP Wade Davis.

Advice: The haul could have been a bit bigger if Davis didn’t come with some health question marks, but Soler is an intriguing buy-low. The 24-year-old started his MLB career with a bang in 2014, but he owns a .253/.328/.413 batting line in 668 plate appearances since. Strikeouts have been the big issue, but his defense has also been shaky. Perhaps the change of scenery will be the jolt he needs. He's expected to see time between right field and DH wit his new team. Soler still has four years of team control remaining. By parting with Davis, Kelvin Herrera figures to move into the closer role and has the potential to be a top-tier option at the spot in fantasy leagues. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 10:58 am

  • Gardner seen as possible fit for Orioles
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Orioles are seen as a possible fit in a Brett Gardner trade.

Advice: The Orioles are looking into a host of options for their lineup, both on the free agent and trade front. While Gardner would be a nice fit as a possible leadoff man in Baltimore, Heyman writes that they would want their division rivals to cover some of his remaining salary. The 33-year-old is owed $12 million in 2017, $11 million in 2018, and there's a $2 million buyout on his $12.5 million club option for 2019. Those aren't unreasonable terms, so the Yankees can probably do better if they are truly shopping him. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 5:34 am

  • A's 'very interested' in Royals' Jarrod Dyson
Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears the Athletics are "very interested" in Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson.

Advice: Several other teams have inquired, including the Cardinals, Orioles, and Rangers. Dyson owns a rough .260/.325/.353 career batting line at the major league level, but he's a good and versatile defensive outfielder and he's also among the fastest players in MLB even at age 32. Dyson is due to become a free agent next winter. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 5:00 pm

  • Yankees drawing interest in Brett Gardner
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that he has received interest in Brett Gardner.

Advice: The Yankees are listening, but nothing sounds imminent. "He's here not because I can't move him; he's here because I'm not comfortable moving him, or haven't been satisfied in my asks that would make me move him," said Cashman. "You're going through the process, and you see if that changes. So far to this point, I've said no to a lot of different concepts thrown my way on it." Gardner is still under contract for two years at $26 million. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 12:48 pm

  • Teams calling the Cards about Wong
Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that teams looking for infield help are calling the Cardinals about Kolten Wong.

Advice: Cotillo was told by a rival executive with interest that the Cardinals "want a lot for him." The 26-year-old owns a disappointing .678 OPS in the majors so far, but the Cardinals appear committed to using him as their regular second baseman in 2017. It would take the right deal for that to change. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 7:54 am

  • Kansas City 'likes' Cubs OF Jorge Soler
Bruce Levine of WSCR-AM and 670thescore.com reports that Kansas City "likes" Jorge Soler.

Advice: Levine also reiterates what has been reported previously in that the Cubs are interested in Wade Davis. Whether the two clubs could have potential match involving those two players remains to be seen. Soler has hit only .258/.328/.434 to this point in his career, but he's plenty young enough (25 in February) to figure things out still. The Rangers also reportedly have interest in Soler. • Royals/Cards discussing multi-player deal?
John Perrotto of FanRag Sports reports that the Royals have discussed a trade with the Cardinals that would send Lorenzo Cain and Wade Davis to St. Louis for Kolten Wong and a package of prospects.

Advice: This seems like something that might have been floated, but how much traction it could get remains to be seen. The Royals are fielding offers for Cain, Davis and others that are poised for free agency following the 2017 campaign. The Cardinals have committed to Wong as their starting second baseman for next season, so it would take a course reversal for them to consider trading him. Rotoworld.com Monday, 4:10 pm

  • Rangers showing interest in Jorge Soler
MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers are showing interest in Jorge Soler.

Advice: The Rangers are intent on adding some right-handed power this offseason, as they've been connected to free agents Edwin Encarnacion, Mike Napoli and Mark Trumbo. Soler would obviously have to be acquired via trade, but the feeling is that the Cubs are likely to move him this winter. He's disappointed with a career .258/.328/.434 batting line but will turn just 25 in February and is under team control cheaply through 2020. Rotoworld.com Monday, 1:56 pm

  • Cardinals expressing interest in Jarrod Dyson
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cardinals are expressing interest in Jarrod Dyson.

Advice: The Cards have also been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Dyson's teammate, Lorenzo Cain. Like Cain, Dyson is heading into his walk year, but of course he would cost significantly less in terms of prospects you'd have to surrender for him. Dyson, 32, sports a pedestrian .260/.325/.353 career batting line, but he would give St. Louis the defensive upgrade they're looking for in center field. Rotoworld.com Monday, 1:39 pm

  • Yankees sign Matt Holliday to one-year deal
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Yankees have agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract with Matt Holliday.

Advice: The veteran slugger, who will turn 37 next month, slashed .246/.322/.461 with 20 homers and 62 RBI in 426 plate appearances with the Cardinals in 2016 while missing time due to a fractured left thumb. • Red Sox have contacted Matt Holliday's agent
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have contacted Matt Holliday's agent, Scott Boras.

Advice: The Cardinals declined Holliday's $17 million option after he .246/.322/.461 in an injury-shortened 2016, but there appears to be a decent market for him as a potential bounce-back candidate. The Red Sox' rivals, the Yankees, are another club that's shown interest and Holliday's former club, the Rockies, have also been mentioned as a potential landing spot. • Soler likely to be traded for young pitching
Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune writes that "the expectation is Jorge Soler will be dealt at some point for young starting pitching."

Advice: Soler saw sporadic playing time in 2016 and with the return of Kyle Schwarber in 2017 and signing of Jon Jay, a lack of consistent playing time next year would again appear to be in the cards. The Cubs have flirted with dealing Soler in the past but might finally pull the trigger on a trade this winter. He's hit a disappointing .258/.328/.434 so far in the majors, but Soler will turn just 25 in February and is under contract cheaply through 2020. Rotoworld.com Dec 4, 6:34 am

    Rangers non-tendered OF Jared Hoying.

Advice: Merely an auxiliary piece on their roster, the 27-year-old appeared in only 39 games for the Rangers in 2016 slashing a troublesome .217/.265/.261 with no homers and five RBI in 49 plate appearances. He'll look to latch on elsewhere as a free agent. Rotoworld.com Dec 2, 3:45 pm

  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis avoids arbitration
Brewers and OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

Advice: It's a split contract, as he'll make that much if he's in the majors but his salary will fall to $275,000 if he's in the minors. Nieuwenhuis hit just .209/.324/.385 for the Brewers last season but did pop 13 homers. Rotoworld.com Dec 2, 9:40 am

  • Royals getting 'multiple inquiries' on Dyson
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Royals are getting "multiple inquiries" on Jarrod Dyson.

Advice: Dyson could be an underrated target for a team looking for a center fielder, as he's excellent defensively and is coming off a career-best .728 OPS. As Crasnick notes, however, Dyson is currently in line to serve on the strong side of a platoon in right field for the Royals, so they'd probably have to acquire another outfielder if they dealt the speedster. Dyson is 32 and is slated for free agency after next season. Rotoworld.com Dec 2, 9:37 am

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that Matt Holliday is "a name the Yankees have thrown around."

Advice: The expectation is that Edwin Encarnacion will likely command a contract beyond what the Yankees are comfortable with, but they have backup options that include Carlos Beltran, Mike Napoli and Holliday. Holliday batted .246/.322/.461 with 20 homers and 62 RBI in an injury-shortened 2016 season and is probably best off as a designated hitter at this point in his career. Rotoworld.com Dec 2, 5:51 am
