    Stanek allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-2 win over the Rangers.

    Advice: This was the second outing in a row that Stanek closed, though it's likely because manager Scott Servais deployed Andres Munoz against the top of the Rangers' lineup in the eighth inning. Stanek has kept runs off the board in eight of his last nine outings, though the exception was a three-run meltdown versus the Royals on June 7. He's pitched to a 4.05 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 28:10 K:BB with six saves, 10 holds and two blown saves over 26.2 innings. Stanek's numbers aren't dominant, but he's done well enough to remain in the high-leverage mix. Munoz is still the primary closer, but Servais may be leaning toward a committee approach in the late innings during a busy stretch in which the Mariners play 22 games in 23 days.   • Alexis Díaz allows four to reach in earning save
    Alexis Díaz recorded his 15th save despite allowing two runs — one earned — in the ninth Friday versus the Brewers.

  • Carlos Estévez locks down save against Giants
    Carlos Estévez go the final three outs to get a save against the Giants on Friday.

    Advice: It didn’t look like Estévez was going to be necessary Friday night, but an 8-1 cushion turned into an 8-6 game, so the 31-year-old was called upon to convert his 11th save. The 31-year-old didn’t allow a hit, struck out one hitter and threw 12-of-17 pitches in the strike zone. Estévez should continue to see save chances as long as he’s a member of the Angels, but keep in mind a trade — very possible with Los Angels going nowhere — would likely make him a set-up hurler; severely limiting his fantasy upside.   • Spencer Howard rocked for four in 2 1/3 vs. Angels
    Spencer Howard gave up four runs in just 2 1/3 innings to pick up a loss to the Angels on Friday.

    Advice: Howard was making his second start of the season. The first one went a lot better than this (4 2/3 IP, one run). The 27-year-old is a former Top 100 prospect who has bounced around organizations, and this was unfortunately an example of why. He gave up seven hits, walked four, and picked up just one strikeout.   • Luis Ortiz works five in relief, allows one run in win
    Luis Ortiz worked five innings of relief while allowing one run to get a win Friday over the Rockies.

    Advice: Ortiz worked behind opener Carmen Mlodzinski. The right-hander gave up seven hits, so he was a little fortunate to allow just the one run. He did help his case by not issuing a walk and fanning three, however. Ortiz doesn’t have another outing scheduled, but there’s a good chance he works in bulk again over the weekend against the Rays.   • Takes third loss
    Smith (0-3) allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out one in one-third of an inning to take the loss Friday versus the Dodgers.

    Advice: Smith gave up a run for the first time since May 22, though it was deemed unearned since Mookie Betts advanced to second base on an error before Freddie Freeman brought him home with an RBI single. After a rough start to the year cost him his high-leverage role, Smith has allowed just three runs (two earned) over his last 14.2 innings, though he has a mediocre 10:3 K:BB in that span. The veteran southpaw is at a 5.40 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB with one save, five holds and one blown save through 21.2 innings overall. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:10 pm
     
  • Delivers quality start
    Ragans allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday.

    Advice: Ragans had just one bad inning -- he gave up a two-run home run to Miguel Rojas and a solo shot to Chris Taylor in the fifth. Aside from that, it was smooth sailing for Ragans, who earned his fifth quality start in his last six outings, though he has just two wins in that span. The Royals' ace is now at a 3.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 102:26 K:BB over 86 innings across 15 starts this season. He's given up more than three runs just twice, with both of those games being seven-run mishaps, so he's often been even more dominant than his surface stats would suggest.     Advice: Most of the Dodgers' bullpen had pitched twice over the last three days, including regular closer Evan Phillips. The two freshest relievers were Vesia and Daniel Hudson, who earned the win after pitching the eighth inning. Vesia is on an 8.2-inning scoreless streak with a 13:1 K:BB, two saves and two holds in that span. He continues to impress this season with a 1.13 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 42:15 K:BB over 32 innings.     Ryne Stanek allowed one hit and no runs while picking up a save Friday against the Rangers.

    Advice: Andres Munoz worked the eighth inning, so the Mariners turned to Stanek for the save chance. He did allow a double to Wyatt Langford, but he was able to work around it while procuring his sixth save of 2024.
