    • Allows two runs in no-decision
Littell did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings against the Twins. He struck out five.

Advice: Thursday represented a return to form for Littell, who held the Twins to single runs in each of the second and third innings prior to leaving after five innings having tossed 95 pitches. Littell had posted a 7.71 ERA and 2.07 WHIP with four homers allowed across three starts and 14 innings during the month of June, including allowing a season-worst six earned runs in just two innings during his previous start. Although he was touched up for a homer for the seventh-consecutive outing, it was also the first time in five starts he didn't allow at least three earned runs. He'll continue to work on righting the ship during his next start, scheduled to come at home next week when the Mariners make their way to the Trop. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:28 pm

    • Wilyer Abreu (ankle) set to return on Friday
Wilyer Abreu (ankle) is likely to return for Friday’s series opener against the Reds.

Advice: Abreu hammered a pair of solo homers on Wednesday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Worcester and is expected to rejoin the club for the start of a series out in Cincinnati. The 24-year-old has been on the shelf since early June when he suffered a right ankle sprain when he slipped on the dugout steps. His return will provide a lift for the Red Sox, who are riding a five-game winning streak. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:37 pm

    • Collects eighth save
Sewald allowed one hit and struck out one during a scoreless ninth to collect the save Thursday against the Nationals.

Advice: Sewald collected his first save in two weeks, having tossed just 1.1 innings over two appearances during that span prior to Thursday. Despite the inactivity, Sewald needed only eight pitches, tossing six for strikes to thwart the Nationals. Sewald did surrender just his fourth hit allowed over 12.2 innings this season and still has not allowed a run since his initial appearance of the campaign. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 4:15 pm
    • Zack Littell allows two in no-decision vs. Twins
Zack Littell allowed two runs in five innings without qualifying for a decision Thursday against the Twins.

Advice: Littell bounced back nicely from his disaster against Atlanta (two innings, six earned runs), but wasn’t able to get enough run support to factor in the decision. The right-hander scattered five hits and two walks while fanning five. One of the runs was a homer by the red-hot Royce Lewis, and the other a double off the bat of Kyle Farmer. Littell has mostly been solid as a starting option, and he’s scheduled to work again next week against the Mariners. Rotoworld Yesterday, 1:28 pm

    • Paul Sewald hurls scoreless frame for save
Paul Sewald allowed a hit and picked up a strikeout in a scoreless inning to get a save against the Nationals on Thursday.

Advice: Sewald has been sensational since returning from the injured list, and the scoreless inning lowers his ERA to a miniscule 0.71. The right-hander also has collected eight saves and will continue to operate as the Diamondbacks closer throughout 2024. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:31 pm
    • Long starting streak comes to end
Castro is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rays.

Advice: For the first time since April 15, Castro will head to the bench, ending a streak of 59 consecutive starts. Though he opened the season in a utility role, Castro has solidified an everyday role thanks to his positional versatility and solid production at the plate. Austin Martin will enter the lineup at second base in place of Castro, who has been dialed in of late with a .368/.429/.605 slash line to go with one home run, six doubles, one stolen base, nine runs and four RBI over his last nine starts. • Activation possible this weekend
Abreu (ankle) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during this weekend's series against the Reds, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Abreu played the second game of a rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, starting in right field, and signaled his readiness for an activation by launching two solo home runs. He's expected to serve as Worcester's DH on Thursday and should rejoin the Red Sox on Friday or Saturday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 5:11 am

    • Remains at DH
Smith started at designated hitter and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Mets.

Advice: Smith returned from a hamstring injury Tuesday but has been limited to DH duties in both games, and he's still made an impact with his bat. In the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday, he doubled in a run then scored a game-tying run. Smith is 3-for-7 with a home run, a double, four RBI and an additional run scored in the two games at DH. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 4:46 am

    • Wilyer Abreu on track to return over weekend
Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora told reporters on Wednesday that Wilyer Abreu (ankle) is on track to rejoin the Red Sox over the weekend.

Advice: The 24-year-old will play the outfield on Wednesday evening at Triple-A Worcester and is expected to serve as their designated hitter on Thursday. The team hasn’t yet decided whether Abreu will return on Friday or Saturday, but as long as he makes it through the next two games unscathed, his return appears imminent. Rotoworld Wednesday, 2:34 pm
