• Starting second game of twin bill
The Giants will call Birdsong up from Single-A San Jose to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Advice: Birdsong was sent to the minors even after striking out 12 while limiting the Rockies to two runs in six innings at Coors Field this past weekend. He'll make a second straight start against Colorado on Saturday, this time at Oracle Park. Birdsong is likely to be sent back to the minors again no matter how he fares Saturday, presuming Alex Cobb (hip) gets through his final rehab start with no issues and is able to return from the 60-day injured list next week. • Hayden Birdsong to start for Giants on Saturday
The Giants will bring up Hayden Birdsong to start the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Advice: Birdsong was sent down Monday, but he can be brought back as a 27th man for the doubleheader. He’ll then return to Triple-A for a spell, though how long that will be is unclear. The Giants are about to get Alex Cobb back after just activating Robbie Ray on Wednesday, but they’re also about to send Jordan Hicks to the bullpen. Rotoworld Thursday, 11:03 am

  • Likely to rejoin rotation
Megill is likely to receive a call-up from Triple-A Syracuse to replace the injured Christian Scott (elbow) in the Mets rotation Saturday versus Atlanta at Citi Field, Andy Martino reported Wednesday on SportsNet New York's "Baseball Night in New York" program.

Advice: Martino relays that the Mets envision using Megill as a high-leverage reliever late in the season, but since he's remained stretched out as a starter after being optioned to Syracuse in late June, the right-hander will be plugged back into the big club's six-man rotation. In his prior eight starts with the Mets this season, Megill turned in a 5.08 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 39 innings, but his underlying numbers (4.29 SIERA, 17.1 K-BB%) suggested that he pitched slightly better than his ERA would indicate. • Michael Grove (intercostal) strong in rehab outing
Michael Grove threw a scoreless inning Wednesday in his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Advice: Grove has been on the IL since June 16 with an intercostal strain. It sounds like he’ll pitch a few more times in the minors before being activated. Rotoworld Thursday, 8:09 am

  • Walker Buehler will make rehab start on Friday
Walker Buehler will make a minor league rehab start at Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday.

Advice: Buehler has been on the injured list since June 19 due to inflammation in his right hip. He has long been fully recovered from the injury though and has spent the past few weeks working on his mechanics at Cressey Sports Performance in Florida and then facing live hitters in Kentucky. He rejoined the Dodgers this week to work with their staff and they were encouraged by what they saw in his bullpen session on Tuesday. He’s expected to make two rehab starts at Triple-A OKC before rejoining the Dodgers’ rotation. Rotoworld Wednesday, 9:12 pm

  • Beginning assignment Friday
Buehler (hip) said Wednesday that he will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Advice: Buehler added that he felt good following his bullpen session Tuesday, so he will now advance to facing minor-league hitters. The plan is for the 29-year-old right-hander to rejoin the Dodgers' rotation once he's made two rehab starts in Triple-A, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, putting Buehler in line to return sometime during the Dodgers' early-August series against the Phillies. • deGrom throws 40-pitch bullpen
Jacob deGrom (elbow) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday.

Advice: DeGrom has multiple steps left before he takes the mound in a regular-season game, and his next step will be recovering without any pain. He said he hasn’t had any problems with bouncing back for nearly two weeks, so if that were to continue, he would be on a rehab assignment somewhere this weekend. Rotoworld Wednesday, 11:39 am

  • Plates three runs in win
Ohtani went 2-for-5 with a double, a steal and three RBI in Tuesday's win over the Giants.

Advice: Ohtani struck out three times on the evening but made the most of his at-bats with runners on. He doubled home two runs in the fourth and singled home another in the eighth for his first game with three-plus RBI since June 19. He continues to be one of the most feared hitters in the league, slashing .314/.400/.632 with 30 homers, 73 RBI, 78 runs, 24 steals and a 55:102 BB:K in 450 plate appearances. • Throws side session
DeGrom (elbow) threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is expected to throw another Friday, MLB.com reports.

Advice: DeGrom is estimated to have thrown between 40 and 45 pitches with three up-and-downs Tuesday, with manager Bruce Bochy noting that the right-hander's fastball checked in at around 94 or 95 miles per hour. Following Friday's session, deGrom will throw a few live batting practice sessions before likely going out on a rehab assignment. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 4:59 am
