    Advice: Scherzer kicked off a rehab assignment Wednesday, giving up a pair of home runs while running his pitch count to 52, including 11 swinging strikes. That's in line with his progression after throwing 40 in his most recent live batting practice session. Scherzer's velocity was down across the board, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com, but that is to be expected from the right-hander, who is working his way back from offseason back surgery.     Garrett (4-0) got the win over the Giants on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over two innings while striking out four.

    Advice: Garrett replaced Sean Manaea with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and retired Jorge Soler on the first pitch to end the inning. The reliever then needed only 12 pitches to get through the next frame before surrendering a solo homer to open the seventh. It marked the first earned run allowed on the season for Garrett, who improved to 4-0 following the win.     Advice: Espinal has feasted on Phillies' pitching, going 5-for-7 with a home run and five RBI over the first two games of the series. It was his fourth straight start at second base in place of Jonathan India (illness), but the ailing India was available off the bench Wednesday and presumably will be available for the series finale Thursday afternoon.     Benson went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 7-4 win over Philadelphia.

    Advice: Benson put the Reds on the board with a solo home run in the third inning off righty Spencer Turnbull, but his biggest hit came three innings later. The lefty hitter delivered the go-ahead run with two outs off lefty Matt Strahm. Benson was a platoon player in 2023 but is getting more opportunities against southpaws this season. It's not always pretty -- 4-for-22 off them thus far -- but manager David Bell let him stay in the game at a high-leverage moment.     Taylor went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's win over the Giants.

    Advice: Taylor jumped on a hanging knuckle-curve from Sean Hjelle in the top of the fourth and sent it into the stands in center field to extend the Mets' lead to three runs. He then added a two-out, two-run double in the fifth, giving the outfielder his third multi-hit performance of the season. Taylor has proven to be a reliable contributor on offense for New York when his number's been called, batting .349 in April with two homers, 12 RBI and five runs scored.     Lindor went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's win over the Giants.

    Advice: Lindor provided most of the offense for the Mets on Wednesday, launching a two-run homer in the top of the third to put New York on the board before then adding a second two-run shot in the ninth. The shortstop finished with season highs in hits (four) and RBI (four), raising his average to .206 in the process.     Manaea did not factor into the decision in a win over the Giants on Wednesday, hurling 4.2 shutout innings while allowing four hits and four walks. He struck out six.

    Advice: Manaea struck out the side in the first inning but got himself into trouble in the second after giving up two walks and a single to open the frame. Fortunately for the right-hander he was still able to work his way out of it without seeing any runs come home, while also working his way through a similar jam in the third. Manaea issued a season-high four walks in the contest and has surrendered multiple walks in all five of his outings so far to open the campaign.     Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Padres on Wednesday.

    Advice: Diaz accounted for half of the Rockies' runs in the contest with his solo shot to center field in the eighth inning.     Blach (0-1) took the loss against San Diego on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks without striking out any batters over five innings.

    Advice: Blach tossed an inning in relief in his season debut debut Monday, so it was a bit of a surprise to see him go five frames and throw 76 pitches two days later. The left-hander looked like he could be headed for an early exit after giving up four first-inning runs, but to his credit, he finished off his outing with four straight scoreless frames. It's unclear how Blach will be used by the Rockies moving forward -- last season, 13 of his 20 appearances for the team came in a starting role, while he made just one start across 24 outings in 2022.
