• Scott McGough to function as opener on Sunday
Scott McGough will function as an opener for the Diamondbacks in Sunday’s series finale against the Padres.

Advice: It sounds like it will be some sort of modified bullpen day for the Diamondbacks, but they may need some reinforcements after Ryne Nelson lasted only 3 1/3 innings in Saturday’s lopsided loss. Expect the Diamondbacks to bring in a couple of fresh arms on Sunday. Rotoworld Today, 9:09 pm
  • Gives up two homers in loss
Brown (1-3) took the loss to the Reds on Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three over four innings.

Advice: Brown gave up multiple home runs in a game for the first time in his young career. Jeimer Candelario took him deep in the first inning and then TJ Friedl got him for the go-ahead homer in the third. The rookie right-hander has now given up eight runs in his last two starts after a stellar showing of seven no-hit innings against the Brewers on May 28. Brown will take a 3.58 ERA into his next start, currently slated for next weekend against the Cardinals. Rotowire.com Today, 6:52 pm

  • Can't find plate in loss
Medina (0-1) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on five hits and five walks over 4.2 innings as the A's fell 7-0 to the Blue Jays. He struck out one.

Advice: The right-hander had no margin for error with Kevin Gausman tossing a complete-game shutout for Toronto, but Medina had trouble finding the plate all afternoon, walking the bases loaded in the first inning to set up the Jays' first run and finally exiting having thrown only 45 of 84 pitches for strikes. Through his first two starts for Oakland this season, Medina has a 7:7 K:BB in 10.1 innings, but the team's lack of healthy arms should keep him in the rotation for now. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next week in Minnesota. Rotowire.com Today, 5:56 pm

  • Starting Sunday
Francis will start Sunday's game against the Athletics, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Advice: Francis will make his first start since being activated from the 15-day IL on Tuesday. The 28-year-old surrendered four runs and tossed 57 pitches in long relief Tuesday and has yielded 12 runs over 8.1 innings during his only two starts this season. However, he'll have the luxury of facing an Athletics lineup that is scoring just 3.6 runs per game in 2024. Rotowire.com Today, 5:53 pm
  • Bowden Francis to start for Blue Jays on Sunday
Bowden Francis will start for the Blue Jays in Sunday’s series finale against the Athletics in Oakland.

Advice: The 28-year-old right-hander has made six appearances (two starts) for the Jays this season — registering a 9.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 19/7 K/BB ratio across 18 innings. Francis threw 57 pitches his last time out against the Orioles on Tuesday, so it’s unclear how deep he’ll be able to work into Sunday’s start. Even with the matchup against the A’s, he’s probably not a recommended streaming option. Rotoworld Today, 5:46 pm
  • Stuck with tough loss Saturday
Woods Richardson (2-1) took the loss Saturday as the Twins were downed 4-0 by the Pirates, allowing one run on six hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out six.

Advice: The right-hander put together one of his best performances of the season, blanking the Bucs until serving up a solo shot to Rowdy Tellez in the seventh inning, but Woods Richardson got no run support at all. He recorded 17 swinging strikes among 97 pitches en route to his third quality starts among 10 trips to the mound in the majors this season. Woods Richardson will take a 2.84 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 42:11 K:BB through 50.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the A's. Rotowire.com Today, 5:27 pm
  • Throws without issues Friday
Castro (shoulder) threw on flat ground Friday and said he felt good, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Advice: Castro was shut down from his throwing program May 19 after feeling discomfort at the top of his shoulder, but he's resumed his throwing program. Prior to the setback, Castro had stretched out to 120 feet. The Diamondbacks will likely play it safe with Castro moving forward. Rotowire.com Today, 5:14 pm
  • Kinley picks up fourth save Saturday
Tyler Kinley picked up the save against the Cardinals on Saturday.

Advice: The save was Kinley’s fourth of the season. He now has saves in back-to-back appearances. The Rockies closer situation still seems like a mess, but there might be some clarity if Kinley continues to be the guy in the ninth inning for Colorado. Rotoworld Today, 4:46 pm
  • Falls to San Francisco
Heaney (2-7) took the loss Saturday against the Giants, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out five.

Advice: All three of the runs charged to Heaney came off the bat of Heliot Ramos -- the outfielder opened the scoring with a double in the first inning before adding a two-run homer in the third. The 33-year-old Heaney had earned wins in his previous two appearances (one in relief), delivering 8.1 scoreless innings in that span. Overall, he sports a 4.06 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and 58:15 K:BB across 62 innings this season. Heaney is currently lined up for a road start next week in Seattle, though he could find himself back in the bullpen with Jon Gray returning from the IL. Rotowire.com Today, 4:40 pm
