• Shut down from throwing
Reds manager David Bell said Friday that Williamson (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing for at least seven days and is evaluating his potential options, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: The left-hander was pulled off his rehab assignment due to persistent issues with his shoulder, and he'll stop throwing entirely for at least a brief period. Williamson has yet to pitch for the Reds this season due to the shoulder sprain, and it's now questionable whether he'll be able to return ahead of the All-Star break in mid-July. • Activated, staying at Triple-A
Thompson (illness) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Thompson has been recovering from a viral illness since mid-May and was rehabbing with Triple-A Iowa this week. While he's over the illness, he'll stick around in the minors, where he started this season. He appeared in three games at Iowa as part of his recovery, yielding one run on three hits with six Ks over 4.2 innings. Rotowire.com 55 minutes ago
  • Cubs activate, demote Keegan Thompson
Cubs activated RHP Keegan Thompson from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Keegan had been out with a viral illness since May 15. He has a 4.97 ERA in 12 2/3 innings out of the pen for the Cubs this season. Rotoworld 57 minutes ago
  • Another rehab start coming
Cole (elbow) will make a rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Cole made his first rehab appearance Tuesday with Somerset, firing 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. He threw 45 pitches and touched 97 miles per hour, which is in line with his normal velocity. Cole should see his pitch count lightened Sunday, though he'll likely need at least one more rehab outing before coming off the 60-day IL. Rotowire.com Today, 1:27 pm

  • Josiah Gray (elbow) scheduled for first rehab start

  • Cade Cavalli (elbow) doing sidework with Nationals
Cade Cavalli’s minor league rehab assignment is on pause as he travels with the major league club.

Advice: Cavalli, on the way back from Tommy John surgery, threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in Rookie ball on May 20 and then allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings in high-A ball on May 30. Rather than keep him in the minors, the Nationals currently have him throwing with the major league team. It suggests there’s no real chance of him pitching in the majors before the All-Star break, not that it ever seemed very likely anyway. Rotoworld Today, 1:19 pm
  • Throwing 50-55 pitches in rehab
Gray (elbow) will throw 50-55 pitches during a rehab start with Single-A Fredericksburg on Sunday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: Gray got up to 76 pitches during a live BP session prior to being sent on a rehab assignment but will be limited to 50-55 pitches in his first appearance. If all goes well Sunday, Gray will head to Double-A Harrisburg for another rehab start. Gray will likely need at least one more outing after the start at Double-A , making late June a feasible timeline for return. Rotowire.com Today, 1:19 pm

  • Gerrit Cole’s next rehab start slated for Sunday
Gerrit Cole’s second rehab start as he returns from an elbow injury will come for Double-A Somerset on Sunday.

  • Cubs activate Jordan Wicks ahead of Friday’s game
Cubs activated LHP Jordan Wicks from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: The Cubs could have had Wicks make one more rehab start, but they’ve brought him back now, even though they have no plans to give him a start this weekend. He’ll probably be back in the rotation next week, but he’ll be available to go long in relief tonight. Wicks allowed three runs and struck out 11 over 8 2/3 innings in his three rehab appearances.
