Fans just one batter in defeatGore (6-9) took the loss against Arizona on Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out one batter over 5.1 innings.
Advice: Though he's been up-and-down in terms of allowing runs this season, Gore entered Wednesday's contest with a healthy 10.3 K/9 over 105.2 frames. It comes as a surprise, then, to see just one punchout on his final stat line, though it's the second time he's posted that total over his past seven starts. In fact, Gore's production has been quite poor over that span, as he's recorded a 7.84 ERA and 24:19 K:BB over 31 innings. It appeared at times earlier in the campaign that Gore could be in the midst of a breakout, but he hasn't picked up a win since mid-June and is now sporting a 4.54 ERA, which would be the worst mark of his three-year career. Brenton Doyle clobbers go-ahead home runBrenton Doyle went 1-for-4 with a solo home run on Wednesday in a 2-1 win over the Angels.
Advice: Doyle will be sad to see the calendar turn to August. He put up a ridiculous 11 homers and .333/.394/.800 slash line in July. I almost did a spit-take when typing out that .800 slugging percentage for an entire month. Doyle’s up to 18 HR overall and has been one of the biggest breakout stars this season. Advice: Happ batted leadoff and helped pace the Cubs in the blowout victory. The outfielder now has 17 long balls this season, bringing him closer to the 20-homer plateau for the second straight year. Happ also pushed his OPS up to .785, which is in line with the .782 and .791 figures he posted in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Ian Happ leaves the yard as Cubs rout RedsIan Happ went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI, three runs scored and a walk on Wednesday night, leading the Cubs in a 13-4 rout over the Reds in Cincinnati.
Advice: Happ hustled out an infield single to start the third inning and came around to score on a two-run double off the bat of Seiya Suzuki. He then chased Reds’ left-hander Nick Lodolo by clobbering a 424-foot (105.3-mph EV) two-run shot in the sixth inning that extended the Cubs’ lead to 8-3. Advice: Jansen appeared to be hurting on the mound during the ninth frame of Wednesday's win, though he remained in the game and finished the inning after Boston's training staff checked on him.
