      Higashioka went 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI in Wednesday's 8-5 win against the Nationals.

      Advice: Higashioka drove in all but two of San Diego's eight runs. He swatted a two-run homer to kick off the scoring in the second inning and capped his offensive outburst with a grand slam in the eighth. The grand slam was the first of Higashioka's career, while the multi-homer effort was his fifth as a big-leaguer.     • Struggles again Wednesday
      Herz (1-2) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 3.1 innings in a loss to San Diego on Wednesday.

      Advice: Herz made it through the first inning unscathed before giving up a pair of runs in the second. He kept the Padres off the scoreboard in the third but gave up two more runs in the fourth inning before being pulled with one out in the frame. Herz was magnificent in tossing six one-hit, scoreless frames with 13 strikeouts June 15 against Miami, but he's struggled in his two starts since, allowing eight runs (seven earned) across seven innings while notching just six punchouts. It remains to be seen whether he'll stick in the rotation when Josiah Gray (elbow) and/or Trevor Williams (elbow) return, though Herz is probably good for at least his next turn given that Washington will play on 17 straight days, beginning Friday, leading up to the All-Star break.     • Dominant in seventh victory
      Cease (7-6) earned the win over Washington on Wednesday, pitching seven scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and issued two walks while striking out nine batters.

      Advice: The only hit Cease surrendered during his seven frames was a two-out single by Nick Senzel in the fifth inning. Remarkably, this was the San Diego right-hander's third outing this season during which he gave up exactly one hit in seven frames, and he unsurprisingly has picked up a victory in all three of those starts. Cease had been struggling coming into Wednesday, giving up 11 runs over his previous two starts covering 8.1 innings during his worst two-game stretch of the campaign. He's had a few clunkers among his 17 appearances this season but has solid numbers overall with a 3.84 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 125:30 K:BB across 98.1 frames. Rotowire.com 31 minutes ago

      Francisco Álvarez went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, walk, three runs scored, and three RBI in the Mets 12-2 win over the Yankees.

      Advice: It’s very easy to forget that Álvarez is only 22-years-old. It’s even easier to forget he just missed nearly two months with a torn ligament in his left thumb.       Aaron Judge went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and walk on Wednesday against the Mets.

    • Luis Gil struggles again in loss
      Luis Gil labored through 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Mets. He allowed five earned runs with four walks and just two strikeouts.

      Advice: There’s been a hard shift in Gil’s season over the past week. He gave up 18 ER in his first 80 innings and 12 ER in his last 5 2/3 frames. He looked uncomfortable and weirdly enough, these last two starts he threw his lowest percentage of fastballs and two of his three highest percentages of changeups in any start this season. It’s important to note that he threw only 136 2/3 innings between 2021 and 2023, so the 85 2/3 he’s already thrown this season are already substantial given his lengthy injury history.

    • Sean Manaea wins, chased by rain
      Sean Manaea pitched five innings before a long rain delay on Wednesday against the Yankees. He allowed just two hits and no runs while walking five and punching out three in a win.

      Advice: This was almost the night Manaea would finally complete six innings for the first time since May 13th. Almost, that is, until a massive thunderstorm held this game up for almost two hours when he had thrown 77 pitches through five innings.       Zerpa (1-0) struck out one without allowing a baserunner over two-thirds of an inning to earn the win over the Marlins on Wednesday.

      Advice: Zerpa's had a strong season, but his overall numbers are skewed by a five-run meltdown versus the Rangers last Saturday. It was just the third time all year he had allowed multiple runs, and he bounced back with a sharp outing Wednesday to grab his first win. Zerpa is at a 3.41 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB over 29 innings while adding eight holds and a blown save. The southpaw saw increased high-leverage work in May, but the Royals have gone 9-14 in June, creating fewer opportunities for him to pitch in key situations.       Advice: While far from a breakout on offense, Goldschmidt has hit safely in nine straight games. In that span, he's gone 11-for-37 (.297) with a 3:12 BB:K, two home runs and five RBI. The first baseman's power and consistency are slowly returning, but he's still striking out at a 29.5 percent rate, his worst mark since his rookie year.
