  • Diamondbacks have reached out to Ziegler
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks have "reached out" to free agent Brad Ziegler.

Advice: They've also touched base with Daniel Hudson. Those two were teammates on the Diamondbacks until Ziegler joined Boston at this year's trade deadline. Ziegler is also familiar with new D'backs' GM Mike Hazen, who held the same position in Boston this past season. The 37-year-old has reportedly drawn interest from a dozen teams and would be a nice consolation prize for clubs that miss out on top-tier closers like Kenley Jansen and Aroldis Chapman. • Report: Melancon has 'multiple' four-year offers
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal confirms Mark Melancon has received multiple four-year offers for at least $60 million.

Advice: Rosenthal said those offers came from the Giants, Nationals and "perhaps one other" club. The Giants' offer is reportedly the strongest. Things seem to be moving quickly on Melancon and it wouldn't be a surprise if he signed during the Winter Meetings, which start tomorrow in Maryland. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:06 pm

  • Casey McGehee leaves MLB for Japan
Casey McGehee has signed a one-year contract with Japan's Yomiuri Giants.

Advice: The deal includes a club option. McGehee spent most of 2016 with Triple-A Toledo, but did log 30 games at the big league level with the Tigers while filling in for injured third baseman Nick Castellanos. The 34-year-old holds a .258 average over 2,798 major league at-bats. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:04 pm

  • Astros looking to add a top starting pitcher
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Astros are looking to add a top-tier starting pitcher.

Advice: The offseason is young, but the Astros have already made improvements to their lineup by adding Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann and Josh Reddick. Now the Astros are going for the jugular by trying to add a top starting pitcher. Chris Archer is one of the pitchers they covet (Chris Sale is also on their short list), though the sense around Tampa Bay is that the Rays aren't eager to trade their best arm. The Astros have the pieces to pull off a big trade and Heyman speculates that Alex Bregman could be part of a return package for an ace like Archer or Sale. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:49 pm
  • Seattle designates Zach Lee for assignment
Mariners designated RHP Zach Lee for assignment.

Advice: Lee spent all of 2016 in the minor leagues, compiling a disappointing 6.14 ERA over 27 outings at Triple-A. His only big league appearance came with the Dodgers in 2015. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:37 pm

  • Mariners add right-hander Casey Fien
Mariners signed RHP Casey Fien to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.

Advice: They also agreed to terms with left-hander Marc Rzepczynski while designating Dean Kiekhefer and Zach Lee for assignment. Fien spent last season shuttling between the majors and Triple-A. Overall, he finished with a 5.39 ERA over 39 relief appearances for the Dodgers and Twins. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:25 pm
  • Orioles looking to trade one of their starters
Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports the Orioles are likely to trade one of Ubaldo Jimenez, Yovani Gallardo or Wade Miley.

Advice: Encina's exact words were that a "five-man rotation won't likely include all three." Encina notes that Miley would probably draw the most interest considering that teams put a premium on left-handed starters. However, trading Jimenez, who is due $13.5 million next season, would save Baltimore the most money. Jimenez was nearly sent to the Padres at this year's trade deadline. Expect the Orioles to field offers for all three at the Winter Meetings. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:30 pm
  • Twins not actively shopping Brian Dozier
Twins GM Thad Levine said unless they are "really inspired," the team will not consider trading Brian Dozier.

Advice: Dozier has understandably been a popular name in trade talks this winter, but the Twins aren't actively shopping him. "We don’t have an immediate replacement," said Levine at an event for season-ticket holders earlier this week. "No one’s replacing his 42 home runs." The power-hitting second baseman still has two years and $15 million remaining on his contract. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:31 pm

  • Texas 'far from optimistic' on Desmond deal
According to TR Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers are "far from optimistic" a deal will get done with free agent Ian Desmond.

Advice: This comes on the heels of a report from MLB Network's Jon Morosi, who said the Rangers' talks with Desmond had "intensified" in recent days. The Rangers are obviously keen on re-signing him, but Desmond won't come cheap after a productive year that included 22 HR, 86 RBI and 21 steals. Desmond turned down the Rangers' one-year qualifying offer, which means Texas will get a compensatory pick if he signs elsewhere. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:44 pm

  • Stroman to pitch for Team USA in WBC
Marcus Stroman announced he will pitch for the United States in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Advice: It's a solid get for the United States, who should have an absolutely loaded pitching staff with Chris Archer, Jake Arrieta, Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander all on the team's preliminary roster. Stroman had a relatively disappointing year for the Jays in 2016, but impressed with a 3.28 ERA over the final two months. He led Toronto with 166 strikeouts. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:32 pm
  • Rangers talks with Ian Desmond intensifying
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Rangers talks with Ian Desmond have intensified in recent days.

Advice: Perhaps as it's looking more and more likely that the Nationals may end up with Andrew McCutchen, the Rangers are moving on to the next best option to fill their hole in center field. Desmond had a resurgent season in Texas in 2016, slashing .285/.335/.446 with 22 homers, 86 RBI and 21 stolen bases. His fantasy value would certainly be helped by staying in Arlington. According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners are "on the verge" of signing free agent left-hander Marc Rzepczynski.

Advice: Chris Cotillo of SB Nation hears it will be a two-year contract. "Scrabble" issued 29 walks over 47 2/3 innings this summer between the Athletics and Nationals, but he still managed a cool 2.64 ERA. The 31-year-old lefty specialist has held left-handed batters to a .222/.291/.298 slash line for his career. There's been natural speculation here since Melancon is from Colorado, but contenders like the Giants, Nationals, and Dodgers figure to be in the mix here, so the bidding could get higher than the Rockies' comfort level. • Report: Around 12 teams interested in Zielger
Chris Cotillo of SB Nation hears from a source that about 12 teams are interested in free agent reliever Brad Ziegler.

Advice: Cotillo writes that Ziegler is "emerging as a strong Plan B" for teams who aren't willing to spend on the big-name relievers like Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen, and even Mark Melancon. It's a logical sales pitch for his agent to make. Ziegler doesn't fit the mold of a dominant late-inning reliever, but he owns a 2.44 ERA in the majors and induces a ton of ground balls.
